Somebody SECOND PLACE
Oscar Chan 6A
I have Somebody, as my greatest enemy,
Whom I can’t control, when he tails behind me.
He is cunning, devilish and extremely foul,
‘Cause fights within, he wins, always dull.
He is believed, to be no more than vapour,
But brings more trouble, than tiring hard labour.
But Somebody is always invisible, to me only
Frustratingly, no one knows he existed, unbelievably!
Whenever I see something that I want,
An urge starts to build, it starts to taunt.
But when somebody else has it, trouble comes,
Somebody seeps in, I become one of his victims.
“I must have that thing!” Somebody forces me think.
And I thoroughly accept it, before I can even blink.
I use all my ways to get hold of that precious object,
Somebody made it never to neglect.
I possibly can’t know, what myself is being,
Somebody has driven me mad, without me knowing!
I am in, shall we say, a kind of a trance,
I must get a grip, under any circumstance.
It is always very difficult, to flick him away,
First to be aware of not going to sway.
Then I must shake off the horrible ideas I’ve made,
That is probably the hardest step, I’m afraid.
If I manage to get my enemy off from attacking,
The damages come over, hugely tumbling!
Now, now, now, you should know who is Somebody,
Which everyone should know, it’s none other than envy.

My Best Birthday Gift THIRD PLACE
Ethan Yan 6E
It was a rainy day on the 21st of September. My classmates trudged back home, moaning and grumbling about the amount of homework that we had been given.
“CRACK – BOOM!” A flash of lighting streaked across the sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder. The rain came down harder. It was as if God had decided to unleash his divine wrath of epicness on us humans.
I continued walking back home through a rain which resembled a heavy torrential downpour in the Amazon Rainforest, minus the humidity, creatures, dirt and most of all the trees. Ten minutes later, I’d reached the safety refuge of my flat but with the price of a sopping wet uniform and a schoolbag.
“Ding-Dong!” I pressed the doorbell. No response. I hammered the doorbell. Still, no response. Frustrated, I whipped out my key and opened the door. I went inside and started my homework. A few times, I heard the obvious creak of a floorboard, but when I turned around, nobody was there. After a few minutes, there was a fizz. The lights flashed and went out. I cursed and went to the fuse box outside. I threw open the cover and flipped all the switches to “ON”. But nothing happened. I quit.
Just as I went into the house, a “Bzzz” rounded and my family jumped out from crannies in the house, followed by the lights turning on. My brother had wedged himself into a corner, holding a lever. The master switch! I had totally forgotten it. My brother extracted himself and gave me a present. I ripped the wrapping open and I saw my favorite thing that I wanted! A nano-drone complete with camera and RC.
“Yeah!” I shouted, followed by a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” from my family.
This was my best birthday present ever!

Do Social Media Really Bring People Together? MERIT
Frank Wong 6A
The rise of social media isn’t a new phenomenon, it has been around for more than 20 years. But the fact of easily connecting with 2 billion people around the globe is so fascinating; we usually can’t communicate with 2 billion people around us, inspiring the question: does social media really bring people together?
People can make new friends and keep in touch with former ones by using social media, even if they are on opposite sides of the globe, allowing you to have a large communications network. Yet this network may not be good.
You may be able to talk with them and they may seem in interested, but you have never met them and they might not think of you as a friend the same way as you do, and even if they like you and become friends, you’re just Facebook “friends”. It is not the same level as real life friends who care for and help each other when in need.
When you overuse social media, you’ll not talk to the people who are actually near you, that you can see but rather ones for far away whom you’ve probably never met.
Social media is indeed a wonderful and advanced invention, and it may bring people together but only if they are far away. It will actually do the exact opposite of bringing people together, so I think that social media hurts people’s relations with others close to them, which is undesirable. It breaks relations instead of making them, so social media don’t bring people together.

My Best Friend MERIT
Lucas Martins 6B
Frankie is my best friend,
He is kind and gentle,
He is a friend to die for,
As generous as an angel.
He is round and cute,
He is humorous and funny,
Everyone likes him,
Cuz he makes us happy.
He is as bright as the sun,
He is as warm as fire.
He comforts people in need,
His personality is for us to admire.
He is very positive,
He is very lovely,
Everyone likes him,
Not surprisingly.
He is my best friend
Not because he’s clever,
But because he’s nice and loyal,
He’s still my favourite friend forever.

Future Cars MERIT
Scott Wong 6B
Don’t you just hate it when cars spew out stinky fumes. Well, we can eradicate this problem in future cars.
First, I’ll describe the design of the cars. I think they should be foldable as Hong Kong is as a small city. They should also have gull-wing doors to prevent our heads getting bumped. They would be solar-powered to save energy. And last but not least, fingerprint recognition to prevent car thieves from stealing our cars.
Next, I’m going to talk about how future cars can improve the environment. Many people say that one of the main problems of pollution is cars. But if we travel in cars of the future, we won’t have the smell of polluted air. We can smell fresh air which is good for our body.
Finally, if we ride cars of the future, society will be a much safer place. According to the police, accidents by cars increase each year at an alarming rate. So, we will be able to save more lives as they drive automatically. If there is a person crossing the road, it would stop immediately. In addition, we can put in alarms that will tell the car when it is speeding, causing you to slow down. This way, less traffic accidents will happen.
In conclusion, future cars will be a real benefit to human beings. So get creative and start innovating!

An Apology Letter to a Teacher MERIT
Calix Deng 6D
Dear Ms Fung,
I know that I have not been behaving well lately and that makes you fell disappointed with me. It is now only the start of 2017, and I am willing to be a better boy this year.
Firstly, I will never be late to school again. I will force myself to wake up early and have breakfast quickly in order to ride on the school bus. I used to lay on bed for a long time, and when I was finally out of bed, it would be already half past seven, and I couldn’t catch the school bus.
Secondly, I will have a better attitude to learning and I will be more attentive in class. I will participate more in group activities, answer more questions in class, and take more notes in order to help me revise during weekends. Also most importantly, you will not see me talk to other classmates during class, because I know this is actually very irritating for those who want to learn.
Lastly, I will be more responsible for myself from now on. I will clean my table every time after lunch, hand in all my homework, and I will not be late from being a prefect during recesses and lunchtime anymore. Actually, I am not willing to be a lousy person!
In a nutshell, I will perform better in different aspects, such as punctuality, participation in class, academic results, and also conduct. These are my directions and ways to improve myself, and I hope that you will accept my apology.
Yours sincerely,
Calix

Future Cars MERIT
Jonathan Chan 6E
Imagine a world with legendary cars that are automatic and “driverless”. Imagine a world that has sleek flying cars that can travel through countries. These are images of future cars. Now, let me review my ideal future cars.
First, all future cars have a luxurious interior design and they are stylish. You can press a button to change the colour of the cars. Also, there are chairs that can turn into beds. Worried that you are tired and can’t drive? Don’t stress, because these cars are automotive. They will never need a driver. They are computer-programmed and will drive you to the destination you want to go. They also detect objects blocking the way. So feel free to doze off during your trip! This will cut down on accidents caused by drivers’ tiredness or road rage and will give passengers a more comfortable and safe journey.
Not only that, these cars have a really unique function. These cars can change their sizes in the parking lot. Easy – just press the “shrink button” so that your car transforms into the size of 1/4 of the parking space. In this way, the problem of full parking lots will be solved and people will have more places to park their cars.
Now, there’s one last problem – air pollution. Don’t worry, these cars are absolutely eco-friendly. They will run on liquid hydrogen and oxygen instead of petrol. Also, their engines will emit water. This can make our city a cleaner place.
These cars really bring convenience to people. They improve our lives and hopefully reduce the speed of global warming. These cars may seem like a dream to a lot of people, but I think scientists will succeed with this some day!
