Together with Speech, our Drama curriculum forms two key pillars to support the dynamics of our English Language curriculum. With the maturity of our English drama teams in recent years, the Hong Kong Schools Drama Festival becomes a major platform to us where our boys' talent in acting can be tested and recognized. We are happy to see our students and teachers receiving these honours in the Drama Festivals:
Hong Kong School Drama Festival 2022/23
Title: Three Sideways Stories from Wayside School ADJUDICATORS' AWARD AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COOPERATION AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMER
Story Synopsis: The story takes place in the fictional Wayside School, a school that was meant to be built one story tall with thirty classrooms all in a row, but was instead built thirty stories tall with a single classroom on each floor, except for the nonexistent nineteenth story. The play is primarily set in Mrs Jewls’ class, which is located on the thirtieth story of Wayside School, and each story focuses on a different student and his or her quirky behaviour which accounts for a lot of humor. There is also Mr. Louis, the yard teacher who is in charge of the school’s daily running and discipline. Sideways Stories wants us to know that all kids are individuals, and because of this they learn differently. |

Title: The Frog Prince Continued ADJUDICATORS' AWARD AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SCRIPT
AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMER
Story Synopsis: Continuing with the story of the Frog Prince where the frog is magically transformed into a charming and handsome Prince with the Princess’ kiss, we now have the two of them, “not so happily” married and constantly getting on each other’s nerves. Thus, the Prince once again wants to return being a frog to live a happily ever after life. In his quest, he seeks the help of many a person -- some good, whereas some not so good ones. So, is his wish granted? Can he (and his Princess) be truly happy after all or spend the rest of their married life, bickering and arguing? This is what this classic Reader’s Theatre tale, originally written by Jon Scieszka, is all about. This tale is both humorous and enthralling and at the same time teaches us a thing or two. |

Title: Rumpelstiltskin, Private Eye AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING AUDIO-VISUAL EFFECTS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COOPERATION AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMER
Story Synopsis: Rumpelstiltskin (the goblin turned into a private investigator) is framed in a theft involving straw spun into gold by the miller’s daughter. He uses his wits and presence of mind to clear his name and protect the king from greedy people who want to cheat him namely the miller, the captain of the guards and the miller’s daughter herself. To do this, he has to risk his life and overcome a lot of hurdles and dangers besides having to win back the trust of his dwarf friend Happy. But all’s well that ends well. At last, the scammers are brought out into the open and receive punishment. Rumpelstiltskin’s name is cleared, and he is rewarded. |

Story Synopsis: Hansel and Gretel were captured by a wicked old witch and kept in a tiny room after having a taste of her gingerbread house. With Hansel’s clever tricks, the siblings managed to stay alive until one morning when the characters from different fairy tales abruptly entered their little space and created yet more chaos than ever: the evil queen who was looking for Snow White with a bag of poisonous apples, Goldilocks the hungry girl who had eaten the bears’ porridge, the princes who were looking for their ideal princesses, and Little Red Riding Hood who was escaping from the Big Bad Wolf… Would these interferences put a halt to Hansel and Gretel’s miserable life, or simply expand their company in the stranded place? |

Story Synopsis: Rufus is a guy who can’t get a break in life. He’s an aspiring actor with lots of passion in all things to do with performing in front of a live audience. Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tries, he always gets turned down for all speaking roles at auditions for the reason that he was born with a stutter. Will he ever get a speaking role in any performance he auditions for? When will he get his first breakthrough role? More importantly, how will he get his big break? |

Story Synopsis: John experiences foreseeing things in his dreams. Does this experience get to his head? You bet it does! He seeks to harness this newly found “power” to gain any advantage he can get. Can his dreams really get him to reach the stars where he can do what most ordinary kids dream of doing: achieve the “easy life”? Or will his life fall apart? Will the twins’ urges of getting John to harness this so-called “power” prevail, or will John have enough positive influence by his side to bring him back down to Earth? |

Title: Why Can’t I Do It Myself? AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SCRIPT
Story Synopsis: The time is now! Technology has progressed into the age of the “helping hand”. The “domestic robot” has reached the homes of the “Average Joe” to help ease their lives. But how will Artificial Intelligence affect our ability to do things for ourselves? We look into the lives of three brothers, two of whom rely heavily on A.D.A.M. (Advanced & Developed Artificial Machine) to make it through their daily routines. From a story originally written by a group of enthused and talented P.5 & 6 boys from Ying Wa Primary School’s 2013-14 cohort, join our drama team on a journey in what we see will happen to us as human beings sooner rather than later. |

Story Synopsis: The two chubby boys, Barry Chubby and Larry Chubby, are facing a huge crisis—Mum and Dad are having a big fight because of them—eating too much. One night, something mysterious happened. Barry and Larry had a weird dream. They became criminals and were accused of overeating leading to obesity. Even worse, Dad was about to be imprisoned because of them! Was it real or was it just a dream? |

AWARD FOR COMMENDABLE OVERALL PERFORMANCE Story Synopsis: In a far away kingdom where words are produced by a machine, the professor responsible for word production found that the machine ceases to work, resulting in that people in the kingdom start losing words and they begin to have a smaller vocabulary to use. After investigation, the one responsible for the lost of words turns out to be the least expected person in the kingdom. The story expresses the theme of power and greed with humorous use of language. |

Title: Circus Break (old title - "Escape Route") AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COOPERATION AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMER
Story Synopsis: This is a tale set in the Land of Ox where a famous circus is run. Day by day, fewer and fewer people go to the circus as the circus’ show has been repeating their tricks and stunts over and over again. People have lost their curiosity and interest in it. Professor Marvelous Mouse seems to become the circus’ new hope. However, Master Joe, the owner, decides to sell the circus to a hunter! Moreover, the animals have been fed up being caged or tamed for so long. They were born to be in the nature but not a puppet being manipulated or put on a show doing tricks that they loathe doing or find them silly to act. All the animals in the circus have to run away for the sake of survival! Where should they go? How could they escape? |
