Mum to the "Rescue"         SECOND PLACE
Jason Chan 6B

After school ended, my friends and I ran to my house for a secret party. Mum and Dad weren't coming back till eight so we had the whole evening to ourselves. Though, none of us breathed a word to our parents about the party, so I hoped it was a "secret" (sort of).

We raided the shelves for snacks and turned on every electrical appliance we could find. We played video games and pillow fights, ate chips and French fries, and simply put, we had a very enjoyable time.

Just as we were enjoying ourselves, the front door clicked open, and outside stood...

A woman.

A tall blonde woman.

A tall blonde woman who was wearing high heels and holding a hand bag.

A tall blonde woman who was wearing high heels and holding a hand bag and was very very very furious!!!

The woman stared at me with her blazing eyes and screamed," what in the world are you guys doing here?"

After a moment of silence, I managed to say...

" Err, hi... Mom..."

Should Hong Kong Students Go Overseas for Studies        THIRD PLACE
Chester Wong 6B

If you are a college student, have you ever considered studying abroad, but were not sure whether it’s worth your time? If you ask anybody who has studied abroad, he or she will certainly tell you that it is a life-changing experience and one of the most rewarding things he or she has ever done. This question also perplexes college students now. Perhaps they are not certain what benefits they can reap from an extended stay in a foreign country. I think they should study overseas. Here are 3 reasons why they should take this challenge:

First, studying abroad allows them to know another culture first-hand. Cultural differences are not just in language, food, appearances and personal habits. A person’s culture reflects very deeply in perceptions, beliefs, and values that influence his or her way of life and the way that he or she views the world. Students who experience cultural experiences personally can come to truly understand where other cultures are coming from. For example, the culture between Hong Kong and Britain is a big contrast, and Hong Kong students can choose to study abroad in Britain or other countries to learn about their culture.

Second, they can see the world. Students considering a study abroad program have the opportunity to see the world. By studying abroad, they can experience a brand-new country with incredible new outlooks, customs and activities. The benefits of studying abroad include the chance to see new terrains, natural wonders, museums and landmarks of the host nation. In addition, when students are abroad, they won’t be limited to travelling in just the nation in which they will be studying; they can also visit the neighbouring cities as well! For example, if they are studying in London, they can travel through various parts of Europe including Paris, Barcelona and Rome.

Last but not least, students can improve their second language skills. Although students may be fluent in their second language such as English, studying abroad can provide them with a perfect opportunity to learn a new foreign language. Being surrounded by native speakers affords them the chance to immerse themselves into that language, which helps so their retention and fluency. Moreover, if the country they are going has the primary language the same one they have studied, they can add to their vocabulary and phrases that may not appear in textbooks.

In conclusion, I think Hong Kong college students should study abroad as they can know another culture first-hand, see the world and improve their second language skills. These are the reasons why I think they should go overseas for their studies.

My School        MERIT
Parco Chan 6B

School can be boring.
School can be interesting.
It all depends
on what you’re doing.

School is my dear.
I like to be there.
I’ll cry out tears,
If I’ve to leave my peers.

Teacher talking,
I’ll hear.
Teacher shouting,
I’ll fear.

During recess,
my peers like to play.
“Rock, paper, scissors”,
they all like to say.

Throughout the tiring day,
my friends like to relax.
So they all pay,
to eat some yummy snacks.

After school,
it’s almost vacant.
As quiet as a fly,
this is a rare moment.

The lights go off
and teachers say good-bye.
With a smile so soft,
I try not to cry.

School can be boring.
School can be interesting.
It all depends
on what you’re doing.

Future Supermarket          MERIT
Wesley Yip 6B

Have you ever thought about supermarkets in the future? What would they look like?  How would they operate?  Let me tell you what I think supermarkets will be like in the future.

I think that customers will let the supermarket trolley acquire the items by themselves.  One only needs to input what he or she wants to buy into a handheld device, where it will then transfer the data to the trolley.  The customer can go and relax in a comfortable room and wait for the trolley to return.

The trolley will go on a fixed route that goes around the supermarket.  When it passes a product device, which will let the customer choose between different brands of the same product.  It will also tell the customer the nutritional value of the items.

After the customer finishes choosing, a mechanical hand from the trolley will get the product of choice.

Finally, after the trolley has returned the customer will pay for the food.  But there will not be human cashiers, but robotic cashiers instead.

These robotic cashiers are programmed to be polite, friendly and helpful.  They can also calculate the amount of money customers need to pay in a tenth of a millisecond.  The robots are able to speak every language of the world.

This is what I think will happen in a future supermarket.  What about you?

My Best Friend         MERIT
Jose Lai 6C

During the six years I had been in this school, I have made many friends who played with me, helped me and so on. I really appreciate them, especially my best friend— Martin.

Martin and I were best friends since P.1 as we are in the same class. He has straight hair, small nose, small eyes, big ears and a big mouth. He is always happy and cheerful. He seldom cries and is very helpful. One day, when it was sports day, I was leading in the 100m race, and he was the second. Suddenly, I was tripped by a hidden small stone and all the other runners passed me, except Martin. He stopped beside me and comforted me. He said, “Are you okay? Do I need to help you to call the teacher?” I was so touched that my tears fell. He gave up the first place and stopped to help me. I gave him a big hug and helped me to walk slowly out of the track.

On another day, when it was time to find a partner for a book presentation, nobody wanted to present with me and I was the only one. At this moment, Martin raised his hand and told the teacher that he let me be in his group and do the presentation together. “Thank you Martin!” I shouted.

Martin is my best friend and I am proud to have such a friend.

How to Make a Healthy Diet        MERIT
Martin Wong 6C

‘We are fats, oils and sweets.
We love giving people treats.’

             ‘Stop it! People need greens!
             Vegetables are better than beans!’

‘Yes!  Yes! Fruits as well indeed!
Vitamins are their main need.’

‘No! No! Beans and meat provide proteins for boys and girls in their teens!’

‘Mind you! They need calcium, please,
from us, milk, yogurt and cheese.’

‘Grains should be present in every feast –
bread, cereal, rice with pasta at least .’

Hush-Hush!
Can you all keep quiet?
All kinds of food are important,
to keep a man as strong as an elephant.
If we can give a good balance,
a bit of fats, some milk and meat, for instance,
more vegetables and fruits and grains,
this will be the best diet for bodies and brains.

Should Hong Kong Students Go Overseas for Studies       MERIT
Lau King Man 6D

In recent years, the number of Hong Kong students going overseas for study has steadily increased. Studying abroad is one of the most beneficial experiences in a student’s life.  I think Hong Kong students should go overseas for studies.  By studying overseas, they have the opportunity to take in the allure and culture of a new country.  There are a number of advantages for overseas studies.

The biggest advantage for studying abroad is the opportunity to see the world.  You will be fascinated by the distinct cultural perspective of a new country.  You can find incredible new foods, customs, traditions and social atmospheres. You can have a better understanding and appreciation of the new culture.  You can explore new terrains, natural wonders, museums and landmarks of the country.

Another advantage of studying abroad is the opportunity to study a new foreign language and improve your second language skills.  Being surrounded by native speakers, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the language.

Studying abroad also gives you the opportunity to meet new lifelong friends from different backgrounds.  While you’re living with a host family or in a student residence, you can get to know and create lasting relationships with those people around you.  Not only will you have someone around you when you have difficulties, but you will also get to know people that you can have fun with.

Studying abroad provides you with a lot of exposure, experience and personal development.  You can discover different cultures, new schools of thought and new methods of study and research.
