Goodbye, My Friend!   SECOND PLACE
Marcus Lok 6E

A message from my friend from primary school, saying, ‘Bye, friend! It’s a pleasure being best friends with you for seven years. I’m immigrating to London for future studies!’ A warm, thankful message Duncan, my friend, had sent, seemed to be Icy Cold to me. I stuttered upon reality. Had he forgotten the wishes we made at the Lam Chuen Wishing Tree? Didn’t he wish to be a friend guiding me on my way? Had he ever left me in the darkness by myself?

I picked up the seashell he gave me on our trip to Hawaii. Maybe the gift was to make me remember him when he left. But everything went so suddenly, leaving me trapped in hesitation. Are the studies more important than his best friend caring about him all day? I stumbled upon the question the whole night.

The next day was the day he was leaving. No matter what, I still had to give him some good wishes. I stuffed the seashell in my pocket and headed to the airport.

Behind the barricades, I looked for him. I could see him with his family. He wasn’t so excited as I thought. He was staring at the ground with his hands in his pocket. As he was almost in front of me, I looked to the other side, pretending to find him and escaping his vision, hoping not to make unnecessary sadness for both of us. However, he found me.

“Sorry for leaving you.” He muttered. “I didn’t want to.”

“I understand,” I replied, “Wish you a better future.”

“Do you still remember this?” He asked, taking out a seashell that was the same as mine. It was the one I had picked for him!

I took out mine as well. “Best friends always have the same thoughts,” I smiled, “Remember me.”

“I will,” he smiled. “It’s time to go. Goodbye, friend!”

And there he left. But I’m sure our hearts will be linked together and never apart.

A Conversation with Time   THIRD PLACE
Duncan Chan 6E

“She was the best person I’ve met, now she has already shaken hands with death.” Aki muttered, droplets of fiery dismay slowly wandered off his pupils.

The person who unlocked the heavenly gates was Valerie, Aki’s deceased girlfriend. She was taken away by the grim reaper via suicide, which tangled the minds of many. She showed signs of suicide, her overconsumption of joy and a drastic increase in generosity.

Aki glanced at the grandfather clock that lay silently at the end of his bed. For how many decades has it been there? We are never sure.

“Why didn’t you give me more time?” Aki screamed.

A cacophony of voices, which wowed be portrayed as a god, sounded, “Time has been given, time has already been gifted, time has forever been wasted.”

Usually, human hearts would swiftly crawl out of the oesophagus, but Aki was on his lowest point in life. He has nothing to lose.

“Spare some more time for me, for everyone deserves a second chance.” His eyes welled up with tears, intangible sobbing.

The cacophony of voices replied, “Many chances have been given, many chances have been dilapidated, many chances have been stolen.”

“I have never ruined any chances, and you have the capacity to say I wasted everything. More time!” Aki barked, he was transported to his own realm, like a limitless abyss, a void consumed one. Just him and the grandfather clock, the grandfather of time.

The voices screeched devilishly, even the void into a crimson hellish hue. “Time shall not be exploited! Her happiness has been ignored, her sadness has been ignored, her cries for help has been ignored!”

This was one of many cases of suicide, time isn’t a thing to be fiddled with, time is a fact.

Goodbye, My Friend!   MERIT
Jayden Tang 6B

Friends are a precious treasure to me. Soon, we all shall leave each other and trod on our own path, paved with blood and sweat. Some of us may meet each other due to fate, some of us separated to start right from square one to make friends. Goodbye, one of my dearest friends, Bobo.

Primary 4, the year we met, on that fateful day of September 1st, a pencil dropped. Not just my pencil, your pencil. Picking it up, I felt your aura. Friendly, loyal, and a feeling I cannot describe. Returning the pencil to you, your face lit up with a cheerful smile. Optimism struck my mind like a bolt of lightning, shocking me in many ways. How could this man be so cheerful? How does he stay optimistic like that? We became closer and closer, until eventually, we became best friends.

Primary 5, we messed around with our new friend, Felix. He became the unhinged clown in our trio. We joked around, played with each other and since then our friendship has been a triangle: strong and sturdy.

In the blink of an eye, a year has passed. Happy moments, sad moments, all shared together within our friendship circle. But now, time has come. Me and Felix had the chance to be together in our new school, while Bobo, had t stay behind and go to another college. Trust me, friend, even though we might be parting ways at this moment, we are never going to truly separate from each other. NEVER!

Goodbye, My Friend!   MERIT

For six years, we have travelled the same path, supported each other from the depths of our hearts, and have endured pain together. But for the first time, we will meet a crossroad.

I remember our first encounter vividly, as if it was yesterday. I was a shy, untalented boy without any friends. And on the contrary, you were an outgoing kid with many pals to chat with. Yet you still offered a helping hand despite our differences. Your personality started to affect me, whenever you were around, the mood always shifted to joy. You were always the ray of sunshine in our group.

During our fourth-grade examination, you got an unexpected failure. You barely passed the paper. Still, you continued to smile. But when I met your eyes, I knew deep inside, you wanted to cry. When the recess came, you buried yourself in the corner and went silently. I understand your pain, as I experienced this before. I comforted you and this incident strengthened our bond. Since then, we laughed together. We cried together. We were inseparable, and some would even call us as brothers. I thought we would be together forever. We could go to college, university and even work at the same job. There were infinite possibilities.

Yet now we started on a crossroad, you go left while I go right. There was no turning back again, and those shimmering possibilities were left to rot to dust. But no matter what, I will remember you, as a true friendship, will never be forgotten.

Yesterday, I had a very special evening!

When I was enjoying some snacks and drinks, a strange and mysterious creature appeared in front of me! It looked like a clock, and it was friendly.

“Who are you? I asked.

“I am Time! You won’t be unfamiliar with me, right?” said Time, in a soft voice and kind tone. “Why don’t we have a little conversation now?”

I eagerly accepted. It told me that there was no way to stop time, so I better not waste my time, but to it wisely. I sat on the couch and listened patiently. I asked it… how I could manage the usage of my time better, and it suggested me to create my very own timetable, which could be placed in my room, where I could make sure I would take a look at it every day.

Together, and with the help and guidance of Time, I made my timetable with ease. But Time told me that making a timetable doesn’t help a lot. He then said I had to follow it and care it. If I forgot all about it, then I would still be wasting my time. After that, it told me that it got to go and help some other kids who needed help. We said goodbye and Time disappeared in the air.

Then, Mum got out from showering. I told her to remind me about the timetable I made to use and follow it. She was delighted to hear that I can use my time wisely in the future. I was glad about the whole visit f time and the ‘lesson’ I learnt during our conversation.

I opened my eyes. Instead of the bright sunlight peeking through the curtains, the mysterious shimmer of moonlight danced in my room like silver butterflies. I would’ve gone back to if this was a normal night, but I did not. There was something under my bed. I could feel it, its hot breath seeping through my mattress. I hear it, its heavy breath and its sharp claws scratching against the floorboards. I could picture it, its crooked body, its bulging eyes.

“Hello?”

Silence.

“It’s just my imagination.” I sighed as I closed my eyelids and swept the terror to the back of my head.

“Exactly!” A high-pitched voice agreed.

I snapped open my eyes, sat up and in front of me was the oddest creature you can imagine. If you could see it, you would agree too. It was…invisible. Yet you could feel it rushing around like water and hear it speak.

“Who are you?”

Silence.

“I know you’re there.”

“Oh, dang it. I’ve been discovered. I am Time.”

“Time? What an odd name. Why are in my bedroom in the middle of the night?”

“Well, you see, it’s quite hard for us to be here when I am everywhere.”

“Everywhere?”

“Yes, as I said, I’m Time. Look, I’ve got to go now, there’s no time for dilly-dallying. Being time is a very time-consuming and demanding job.”

“Why do you have to go, you’re everywhere.”

“Well, I’m finding a new person to own me.”

“Own you? I can own you.”

“No, you’re already owning one of us, you can’t own another.”

I swear, at the moment I felt another Time looming on me, it was like being submerged in water, but you will still be dry and you can still breath perfectly normally. When it stepped back, it felt like being hit by a wave of heat.

“My last owner wasted, so I left to find a better one. “Time signed in distress,” I used to be seen. I was like a cloud, but the more I am wasted, the less visible I am. I have to find a new owner before dawn breaks, bye.”

There a gust of wind as it flew through the walls and followed bu silence. I swear once in a while, when I waste time, I could feel my time looming over me, glaring and when I stop it the queer sensation vanishes without a single trace.

Goodbye, My Friend!   MERIT

Dear Max,

As the summer is getting closer and closer, we will be secondary students. I am very excited and looking forward to it! However, we also need to be separated as we are going to different schools. Whenever I think about it, I always feel disappointed and a bit unhappy.

Do you remember the first time we met? In the badminton team, we have always been friends and also opponents. The first time we met and competed together. I was defeated by you entirely. You still encourage me and taught me your skills! You are such a kind and polite friend. Even I often make mistakes when be your partner in competitions, you never grumbled but kept encouraging me!

Last time we went to the Beijing tour, I thought I will be chosen at last but you selected to live in the same room during the tour. You knew you have better choices of friends, but you still chose me because I have few friends, right? You will definitely have a lot of friends in the new school since you are a great friend!

Goodbye, mt friend! Although it will be hard to play with you often after summer, I still hope we can keep communicating. Don’t forget our promise about that! Hope you’ll have a fantastic school life in the secondary.

Sincerely,
Skyler Cheng
