Easter SECOND PLACE
Colin Tong 5E
Eggs and bunnies are drawing near,
‘cause Easter, you see, will soon be here.
All those joy and happiness we’ve awaited,
makes the pleasant day even more great!
Come, celebrate the joy of Spring,
the lovely season we’ve desired so long.
As touching as a singer’s voice, birds chirping.
A choir which symbols the voice of Easter’s song.
Tortured by verbal abuse on that day,
Jesus suffered along the way.
He dragged the cross along the street,
on where he would hand dead,
in his heart, a feeling of dread.
A crown of thorns on his head.
The nail was soon hammered,
all hopes were shattered.
The sky gradually became gray,
women sobbed, for Jesus they prayed.
Their sins were repaid,
but their beloved Christ died that day.
Three days later, the tomb was rolled away.
His life up from the grave was raised.
He is a rainbow in our life.
He conquered death, from death set free to those who believe, their Saviour to see.
His blessings and virtues, only for me and you.
Happy Easter!

A Day in the Life of a Race Car Driver THIRD PLACE
Jonathan Ford 5E
It was 1951, a man’s world, where all good jobs were for men, and women… could only be housewives. They needed a trailblazer to light the path of equality. Let me share with you how they did it… through racing!
Young Louise Smith grew up and had a vision, in which women would be accepted just like men. She was ready to do what it took, not just for herself, but for every single woman on the planet!
One day, she drove her flagship Nash Ambassador to Daytona Beach; a classic track for NASCAR stock racing. When the other all male drivers saw her they all fell about laughing and make nasty jokes. However, Louise was not a woman to give up her dream so easily She calmly took the jokes in her stride and drove to the starting line.
“3, 2, 1, Go” Louise fired up her Nash’s engine and roared around the track! She was such a sight as she whizzed past the spectators. She was sure that this was the day when she would win for all the females of the world!
However, the Daytona raceway was not the easiest of tracks. In fact, it was the hardest! It was created from sand, covered with dirt and had very tight corners! For an inexperienced racer like Louise, it was a most difficult initiation. Her Nash skidded and slued on the first few laps, but she was determined and quickly learned how to turn on dirt. Afterwards, she was on a roll!
She zoomed past race-car after race-car and stole the chequered flag! The spectators cheered, and wowed and roared their approvals; especially the female ones. She had completed her duty! She had paved the way for women! She was a pioneer!

A Day in the Life of a Chair MERIT
Nicholas Cheng 5A
Chatting excitedly, a group of students wandered into the classroom as the bell rang loudly. I bubbled with excitement because this was the first time in my life being a chair. I was a chair which is not finished in a factory before today. I really want to feel how the children would sit on me.
As I was thinking, I suddenly felt my owner’s heavy bottom sit on me. “Whack!” he kicked me hard on my foot. The excitement in my heart suddenly disappeared, and I started feeling annoyed. My owner kept kicking me! Soon, I finally felt the fury rising inside me due to my owner’s intolerable behaviour. I decided to help him to forget this nasty habit. Soon, the recess bell rang and the children scattered out of the classroom. I gathered all of the other chairs and soon mapped out a plan for paying revenge on my owner.
Fifteen minutes later, the children came back. This time, I actually hoped my owner would kick me so I could help him make a change for the better. My owner came back and kicked me just as before. Instead of doing nothing and sitting there quietly, I jolted up and down like a jackhammer this time, hoping that it would make a difference. Then, I heard him screaming to his classmates, “Wow! Is there an earthquake?” As he was talking, he kicked me again. This time, I tipped backwards, but my self-centered owner still didn’t realise his problem. He hung his mouth wide and whispered to himself, “What’s going on? Is my chair moving by itself lately?” He immediately kicked me again, but this would be the last time. I was so bothered that I fell over, making him tumble down on the floor.
Wiping the back of his head, my owner stood up and looked at me in disbelief. It seemed as though that he was thinking about something and soon, he found out his answer. “Sorry,” he bowed his head as he apologised to me sheepishly. “I shouldn’t have kicked you constantly. I promise that I will be kinder to you from now on.” I felt delighted because of his drastic change. I knew he felt guilty, so I decided to forgive him.
Just then, the bell sang out the third time. The classroom was once again empty. I felt that I handled this problem very well and the edges of my seat bent upwards in a smile.

Pollution MERIT
Hui Chi Hang 5A
The sea water is dark,
and there are no more sharks.
The sea gulls aren’t flying,
and they are crying.
There are no more fish to eat,
they need to eat wheat.
The sea is with bad smell,
that every creature passes by yells.
The air is dark too,
the sky is no longer blue.
The children wonder why,
who has stolen their beautiful sky?
Pollution is terrible,
the damage is incredible.
Why don’t we all do something today?
Without further delay?
Replace, Reduce, Recycle and Reuse,
we shouldn’t have any excuse.
Our earth is our tomorrow,
save it or one day you will be in sorrow.

A Day in the Life of a Dog MERIT
Alfred Tsang 5B
Hi everyone, I am Boo. I am a cute and playful Pomeranian which lives in Hong Kong. I have a master named Jeff, she loves me a lot. My best friend is Kong, although he is very naughty, still, he is my best buddy.
Every day, Jeff will go to the park with us to have a walk. I always play fetch with Jeff but Kong always prefers to eat snacks below the prine tree. After that, we always go and bully the Chihuahua next door, but Jeff stops us every time. Later, we eat the delicious lunch that we absolutely enjoy. Than Kong and I will play together while Jeff will do her own thing. At last we will eat dinner and go to sleep. Every day goes on like that. But today was different.
Today when we woke up, we stayed in our den and waited for our breakfast like before, but we didn’t heard a sound of footstep. So we went out to see if Jeff is home, but she was nowhere found. Kong was screaming (that means he is barking) as he was very hungry. (He is hungry all the time!) I kept calm and I knew we needed some help, so I opened the front door smoothly and I barked in front of our neighbor’s door, but there was no answer. I started to feel nervous. I went back to Jeff’s house and started barking with Kong. After a while of barking, we heard some footstep coming out from the door, as the footstep was very loud, we knew it wasn’t Jeff, so we were very scared and we panicked. The footstep came closer, we put our combat mode out and ready to bite that pupil who is coming. That pupil jumped in. To our surprise, it was about five people, Jeff was there too! They shouted,’’ Happy Birthday, Boo and Kong!” They were our neighbors, even that Chihuahua came too. They gave us some presents, I got a squishy toy, a ball, some treats and so did Kong. Although I don’t understand what they are doing and I don’t understand what humans are doing every day, but the thing I know is they all love us a lot.

A Letter to Mrs Lam MERIT
Hanson Fung 5C
Dear Mrs. Lam,
In the past five years, thank you for accompanying us, for better or for worse, you encouraged us all the way, and you have taught us to have a positive attitude towards challenges, and to do our best no matter what the result is. And the phrase “winning is not everything but the effort to win is” was the one that I can remember the best.
Mrs Lam, do you still remember the School’s Music Festival last year? We thought our practices paid off at the end when we finished the last note of the song, but it didn’t. We lost. We were neither at the first place, the second, nor the third. When we slowly stepped out of the competition venue, some of our teammates were sad and walked around gloomily. Some of their eyes were even bright-red, wanting to cry.
After we have lined up, you told us the marks and the judge’s comments, and then said a lot of words to comfort us. In your speech, the phrase “winning is not everything but the effort to win is” really touched us. We instantly cheered up and aimed to do better next time.
Recently, I have really improved and become the vice-concertmaster! I am so happy and I am looking forward to becoming the concertmaster in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Hanson Fung

The Future MERIT
Nathan Shek 5C
The future is a mystery to all of us, but according to our current state, many theories are appearing. I personally think that there are three main problems that might affect the survival of our species, or, if worse, all living things on earth.
The first thing, which drew most attention, was global warming. It had worsened rapidly over the years, leading to melting glaciers, which lifts the sea level, dead coral reefs, which affects the number of fish, putting the people of Philippines, Madagascar, and more who rely on fish for life at risk. This is mainly because of the rising demand of woodwork, meat, electricity, and different factory-made products. Businessmen, just for the money they earn, give up even the environment and relentlessly cut down trees, hunt for coal, natural gas, and oil to burn, Brighton, manufacture products by large amounts, at the same time giving up substantial amount of carbon dioxide, and breeding cattle, which lets out methane, whose greenhouse effect is 30 times worse than CO2. If we let the global warming continue, the world will become inhabitable. But, if we really avoided it, the anti-antibiotic apocalypse will stop us right in our tracks.
As I just mentioned, the second problem is to anti-antibiotic apocalypse. Bacteria, viruses and germs have started to get accustomed and immune to antibiotics due to the abuse of antibiotics with a lot of diseases and sickness. Most of the time, some cells escape after being defeated by the antibiotics, and start making antibodies of its own. Then, the bacterium / virus / germ starts duplicating itself, in the meanwhile spreading the antibodies. In the next attack, the antibiotics will become useless. Thankfully, scientists are working on developing bacteria-fighting viruses and vaccines. There are also on the hunt for undiscovered compounds. Failing that, we could still design artificial microorganisms that can hunt and destroy problematic bacteria.
The third problem is about A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). In order to reduce human casualties, governments and scientists are developing machines known as LAWS (Lethal Autonomous Weapons), and it will be only a matter of time before they get equipped with powerful weapons and get programmed with A.I.. Of course, LAWS will be imbued with safety mechanisms and ‘moral’ programming, but they’ll be difficult to test, will still have software bugs, and will act unpredictably at times, so experts fear these killing machines could be prone to accidents or even escape human control.
I hereby ask everyone who is reading this essay: Protect the Earth, don’t let global warming worsen; Support peace, do not war!
