Primary 2 awarded pieces* (2nd place, 3rd place and merits)
Mangosnail SECOND PLACE
Lucas Wong 2A
One day, I was picking some mangoes under a mango tree in the forest. One of the mangoes looked strange. It had a rough surface with small black dots and two eyes. Wait! Two eyes? I was trying to take a photo of it but suddenly, it moved. It was a snail. Not just any ordinary snail, it was a new kind of snail!
This special snail had a mango-like shell so I thought it was a mango. I ran home and told my parents about it. “What does it look like?” Mum asked. “It has a yellow shell, a small head, a pair of tentacles and two eyes. It looks like a mango.” I said. Dad suggested calling it “mangosnail.”
On the next day, my parents and I went back to the forest and found even more mangosnails. They were crawling on the branches of the mango tree and chomping on its leaves. We saw a big bug flying near one of the mangosnails. Suddenly, a tube stuck out of its shell. Gulp! The mangosnail ate it. Splat! We looked behind the tree. A mangosnail fell down. It had wings so it flew back to the tree.
It was getting dark and my torch ran out of battery. I switched it on and off but it didn’t turn on. At this moment, lots of spotlights appeared on a tree. The mangosnails were glowing and flashing on the tree. They lighted up the forest. How amazing and beautiful the mangosnails are!

Simia Venatorum (Monkey Hunter) THIRD PLACE
Christophe Chan 2E
The Simia Venatorum looks like a monkey with a tiger’s head. It has powerful jaws, sharp retractable claws and a long strong tail which allows it to swing swiftly from tree to tree in the rainforest. With yellow and black stripes breaking its outline, it patiently waits in the tree top canopy hiding within the mix of moon light and shadows as it searches for unsuspecting prey with its keen sense of smell.
It is mainly a nocturnal creature which catches smaller animals that come out at night, but if it is really hungry, it might also hunt during the day time. If you visit a rainforest at night, beware of a distant growling from high above. This is often the sign of a hungry Simia Venatorum looking for its next meal. Don’t run. Don’t hide. Just walk away from the territory of the Simia Venatorum in an orderly fashion as soon as possible so you can avoid any tragedy.

City Sports Day MERIT
Adrian Hon 2B
In Hong Kong, there are seventeen days of public holiday in 2022. I propose a new public holiday called City Sports Day, which will be held every autumn.
The aim of this City Sports Day is to promote a healthy lifestyle among Hong Kong citizens. People celebrate this day by participating in sports events and activities. On the day, there is a wide variety of sports games available to all ages and abilities, so that everyone has the chance to participate in a sport of their choice. For kids, they can take part in fun and easy sports games, namely egg and spoon races, three-legged races, sack races, wheelbarrow races and parent and child races. Adults can play track and long jump, even ball games range from table tennis to basketball, taekwondo, track cycling and equestrian. For the elderly, they can join low-impact sports that keep them physically active. The best sports include Taichi, swimming, golf, croquet, pickleball and gateball.
Celebrating City Sports Day highlights the importance of sports in a healthy community. Everyone can engage enthusiastically in sports activities. I wish we can enjoy this new public holiday in the near future.

Blue-winged Copycat Birds MERIT
Caden Leung 2A
Blue-winged copycat birds are the largest birds in Duck-handed Forest. They have sharp beaks for hunting and picking up twigs for building nests. For the males, they are about 80 cm high and 90 cm long. The males have grass-liked feathers helping them to camouflage. For the females, they are about 60 cm high and 80 cm long. Unlike the males, they have colorful feathers. Both males and females have webbed feet to help them swim.
Blue-winged copycat birds mainly live in the Duck-handed Forest which is located in Duck States. They are active at daytime. They are quite shy, so it is very difficult to find them.
Blue-winged copycat birds are omnivores, meaning that they eat both plants and meat. They like to eat fruit, leaves, insects, worms and all kinds of vegetables. When it is winter time, blue-winged copycat birds store fruit and vegetables in their nests.
Where can you find their nests? Blue-winged copycat birds builds their nests under trees and behind tall bushes. They females usually lay two eggs at a time. The eggs are reddish in colour with a green patch on top.
Blue-winged copycat birds can make many sounds, including whinny, bark, wail, roar, grunt, hoot and more. They are named as copycat birds because they can mimic all kinds of sounds, even the sounds of their predator’s predators to scare them away.
What animals are their predators? They are snakes, wolves, coyotes and bears. They can also face danger from eagles and owls, which like to eat their eggs.
I think blue-winged copycat birds are smart and funny. Do you agree? Would you want to have one to be your pet? Or do you want to have a blue-winged copycat bird to mimic your voice?

Luse Tie the Green Festival MERIT
Matthew Fong 2C
The new public holiday is called Luse Jie the Green Festival. It is a special day when people show their love to the earth.
People celebrate this festival because they think they are very lucky and blessed to live here. So, they want to express their gratitude and appreciation to the place they live. To make their lives happier and healthier, they will reduce, reuse, recycle and replace the resources they have.
People celebrate Luse Jie by 4R “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace”. First, they reduce the use of water, light and air conditioning. Next, they reuse the shopping bags and the papers. Then, they recycle the resources they have, like books and toys in good condition as gifts to people who are in need. Finally, they replace tissues by using towels after washing their hands.
Luse Jie the Green Festival makes the people happier and healthier. How fantastic it is!

Cool-la-la MERIT
Cody Tang 2D
I like adventures. Today I decide to go to the forest. When I am in the forest, I hear a loud ‘moo’. What is it?
I find a new animal! Its name is Cool-la-la. It has a supersauras body, leopard legs and a pair of huge golden wings. It can fly 40 km/hour. It can run really fast, but swim slowly. It lives in a rock cave. Its size is like a lovely puppy, however when it gets angry, it becomes enormous like an elephant! Luckily, it is a herbivore so it doesn’t eat me up!
‘Can I keep it as a pet, Mum?’ I ask. Her face turns pale and puzzled.

My Name is Mocha MERIT
Gabriel Ng 2E
I am a Tarsier-panda. My mother is a tarsier from Philippines and my father is a panda from China. We are now living in the forest of Sichuan where summer is very hot and winter is very cold and snowy.
Like my mother, I have a round head with large goggling eyes and a small nose. My face is short and covered with brown hairs. My ears look like other monkeys. My body grows like my father which is round and fat, covered with heavy black and white fur. I have a short tail too.
I like to eat bamboo shoots and leaves. But I am not a vegetarian. I also eat insects like snakes and lizards too.
I cannot camouflage. But I can turn my head in 360 degrees to watch for my enemies. Is it interesting?
Recently, I have taken a beautiful picture of me as attached. Hope you will like it! Come to see me in Sichuan after the epidemic Covid-19. We can take photos together!
