The Song at Night SECOND PLACE
Darren Chen 5E
“It’s close to midnight, something evils lurking in the dark……” a weird song always resounding at midnight recently. Whenever this song resounded somewhere in the town, a corpse would be found by the police the next morning and they all died of knife wounds.
Tom, a smart detective, was in charge of the murder cases happening recently. He interviewed residents who lived near the murder scenes but no clues. Until the fifth murder. A resident told Tom that he once lived in an orphanage when he was small and this song was always sung by a youth gang at that time. What a coincidence! Tom realized that those victims all lived in the same orphanage during their childhoods. Therefore, he immediately went to the orphanage to investigate.
“I remember a boy named John. Because he was weak, some boys in the orphanage always bullied him. They liked to listen to that song, so every time John got bullied, they’d play this song,” the warden of the orphanage said. “I asked John many times if he was bullied by those boys, but he always said no. A week later, John disappeared. I think he couldn’t stand the bullies anymore so he left the orphanage.”
John became a suspect. John asked the police to help find John. He also tried to find the remaining naughty boy who bullied John because he thought John might want to kill him as he was the last boy of that youth gang who was still alive.
One night at twelve, the song resounded near the last boy’s house. Tom saw John coming with a knife in his hand. Tom arrested John immediately and saved the life of the last boy. In the end, John was sentenced to death and Tom became famous for solving a serial murder cases!

A Day in the Life of a Tissue! THIRD PLACE
Caspian Yeung 5C
Hello, my name’s Timple. I’m a tissue, living in a recycling bin miserably. You might be wondering: Why are you living in a recycling bin? Well, let me tell you.
I had a very large family, with my dad, mom and 256 brothers. We were a very royal family because we were all made with premium quality paper. Each of us were made soft and pure. Maybe if I told you my last name, you would know who I am. My last name is Tempo, Timple Tempo. Each of us has a specialty, like a really good smell or nice patterns. But I have every specialty. I have a sweet applewood smell and a Pikachu pattern that every kid loved, so my parents like me the most. Because of that, I always boasted to my brothers. My parents told me to be humble, but I couldn’t contain myself because I looked too good.
I guess my brothers grew jealous of me, because they tried to get revenge in a lot of different ways like flushing me down a toilet or locking me in a freezer, but I always escaped. Until one day, my brothers decided to give me to a human while I was sleeping. The human used me to dry his hands, then threw me into a recycling bin! It was a very traumatic experience, but luckily he just scrunched me up into a ball and he didn’t rip me to pieces, so I survived.
But very sadly, I could never see my parents again. I felt like I shouldn’t be so arrogant and rude. I understand this principle and I will improve later in life. On the flip side, luckily I was disposed into a recycling bin and I know I will be reincarnated into another useful object.

A Letter of Advice to Miss Trunchbull MERIT
Golden Wu 5A
Dear Miss Trunchbull,
I think you should be nicer to your students. There are three pieces of advice I want to give to you.
I think you should not plough through any children that are in front of you. You can ask them to move out of your way politely. If you just plough through the children, they might get hurt and it will be your fault.
I strongly advise you to know more enough about a student before you say anything bad to him or her. Like Matilda, she really was a genius but you thought she put a stink-bomb in your sewer. She could do multiplications in one second. You thought you could multiply too and a calculator can do it at same speed, but Matilda can multiply faster than you and she is younger than you. Also, Matilda read famous books which calculators can’t and I bet you hardly read anything.
I really think that the punishment of answering questions incorrectly or misbehavior isn’t necessary. Answering questions incorrectly means the student hasn’t absorbed the knowledge yet, so you don’t need to hold them in the air by pulling their ears or hair. The outcome is too cruel and horrible to children, and this makes the children scared to death.
All in all, you are too mean to your students and you should be nicer. I think this would prevent you from harming students.
Yours,
Golden Wu

An Embarrassing Zoom Experience MERIT
Tse Wan Nam 5B
Saturday, 1:30 p.m, the time of my online math’s tutorial, and 1:45p.m, the time when my brother eats his lunch.
Every time when I boot up Zoom and get ready for the tutorial, I’d have to avoid the “slurps” when my brother slurps on his noodles! No matter if it’s spaghetti, instant noodles, Udon, or even Pho, he’ll make such a loud sound even astronauts on Mars can hear it! Ok, I admit I did go a bit over the top with the mars thing but still you get the idea.
So every time when my brother slurps on the noodles, I’ll have to hold down the mute button and type out what I am going to say to my teacher and send it, while holding mute, or else my teacher’s ears are going to shatter. Luckily, I was pretty good at timing my mutes, but luck left me yesterday…
I booted up my zoom and got my math’s worksheet. I saw another participant in the zoom meeting, turns out there was another student joining from this day on. Once my brother sat down with his Spaghetti Bolognese, I knew I had to time the “mute” key, bind to Alt+A and not Alt+M? Oh…no…
Thank you, Wan Nam, for telling us that 83 times 112 is a SLURP. Well I couldn’t blame my brother for this, because the one that changes the keybind for muting my mic was ME. It was so embarrassing! But as I thought I was going to get into trouble, everyone just… well… laughed! Now it was EVEN more embarrassing then before.
A month has passed, and the new dude was still laughing at me. Thank god this didn’t happen on a meeting with many people, or else my whole SCHOOL YEAR would be ruined.

I Day in the Life of Me MERIT
Felix Ma 5C
Hello everyone, my name is Mr Tissue. Although I appear to you as a thin white piece of paper, I am actually much more than that. Before being born in the tissue factory, the materials from which my body is made were taken from a tree and manufactured.
So here’s a sneak peek of a day in my life. I first wake up in a box full of other sheets of light material, who I like to call my brothers. On this specific occasion, we are taken to a family of three, Max and his parents. However, Max has allergies and keeps on using us to wipe his snot. This isn’t a big problem as we get reborn every time we end up in the bin. Unfortunately, Max thinks that he is a basketball star and keeps on trying to shoot us into the bin. When he misses, we have to witness our brothers landing on the floor, calling for help as they desperately need to be reborn. Luckily, Max’s mother likes the floor being neat and tidy, so she always picks us up and throws us into the bin.
At the end of the day, we sit in the bin, wondering which family we will be joining tomorrow. If you are lucky, I might turn up at yours!

A Letter of Advice to Miss Trunchbull MERIT
Henry Fei 5D

Dear Miss Trunchbull,
Hi! I'm a student from Hong Kong. I've heard of your unique teaching method and I would like to give you some advice. Even though I think there's a big possibility you'll rip this letter into pieces, I'm still happy to help.
To begin with, you should be kind to everyone. No matter who it is, you should always keep a nice attitude. Discard the Chokey and change the school. You will soon win everyone's support.
After that, you should listen to everybody else. Listen patiently to the teachers' and students' points of view. You might find some of them useful. If you only focus on your opinions, then the school will miss lots of elements and eventually fail.
In addition, try being friends with everyone and be humorous. My favourite teacher is Dr Lee. He has a strong bond with us and always makes us laugh. If you learn from him, everybody will treat you as a buddy.
If those are achieved, try planning in advance. Everybody now believes you and are willing to listen to you. Set reasonable goals for the students and the teachers. The goals might not be fully achieved, but it gives them the encouragement to persevere and never give up.
Finally, keep everybody on task. Check on them every week to see how they’re progressing. You may help difficult students by teaching them step by step and by encouraging them.
I hope this letter is still in one piece and I hope you can improve. Send me a letter to let me know how you’re doing! (If you did.)
Best wishes,
Henry

Should Students be Given a Choice in Homework MERIT
Harris Leung 5E
Homework is part of every student’s school -life and plays an important role in their road of learning. For the benefit of students, I think they should be given a choice in homework. The following are the reasons that supports my opinion.
First, students will be more motivated in learning if they are given their choices of homework. Often students find the homework is too hard or too boring; the lack of motivation may lead them fail to complete the task. Giving students choice in homework will make them feel more grown up and their preferences are valued. This will enhance their motivation and develop their autonomy.
Second, letting students choose their homework will encourage their engagement in learning. Their choice allows them the opportunity to choose the materials and the resources they will utilize. They will explore topics of what they want to learn about and expand their interests that will only have positive effect on their learning path.
Last but no least, giving students choice in homework will improve the learning atmosphere in school. From their choice of homework, the teacher will learn more about each student’s strength and weakness, so he can focus on individual students that may need extra assistance. All students should get the attention from their teachers and be happy with their involvement in class.
To sum it up, seeing the advantages of students being given a choice in homework, I strongly believe that it is a great idea and we should give it a try in the near future.
