A Letter to a Government Official SECOND PLACE
Colin Tong 6C
Dear Sir/ Madam:
The scourge of the society cannot be estranged and eschewed from and despite being a razzamatazz and cosmopolitan city, there is a problem under the spotlight despite all the protocols and it is posed detrimental, I believe the problem of abusing animals in Hong Kong should be assuaged stringently. I will now give three reasons of why and how we should rectify it.
I have indeed witnessed and suspected that rampant pet abuse has been uninspected yet, and which leads to pets which cannot be euthanized. I do not want a stigmatization on my neighbors, however recurrent activities put the animals in irrepressible jeopardy. Earlier on, my neighbor adopted an English bull dog. I saw that it was ebullient and effervescent, with a zestful characteristic. However, as time passed, it became frailer and frailer, and unobtrusive and inconspicuous bruises were seen on its body. The aggravating problem, in fact, deteriorated when I ran into my neighbor at the park. The dog was limping arduously. Its exultant and once-blazing eyes have now drained out of life. This pathetic image has been etched in my head.
In light of this acute problem, all owners should be more adroit and sedulous to care for every animal’s needs. Our society isn’t welcome for sluggish, ailing pups- every owner should shoulder the responsibility to take care of their pets. I am suggesting that the penalties for maltreating pets and abandoning pets should be raised to reflect the moral capability of such ruthless acts. Educational campaigns should also, indeed, be staged to raise awareness and advocate animal rights. Official’s should consider treating pet abusers as felons.
Yes, like Tartarus, abusing animals is demoralizing and detrimental. Those inhumane treatments are unjustifiable. Of course, inflicting pain upon them is not only against our conscience but also morally impermissible by any possible measure. As stewards of the world, we have the responsibility to exercise our rights with restraint and care. I genuinely hope that public awareness can be duly raised and a rosy future for every animal.
Sincerely,
Colin Tong

A chat with the 41-year-old me THIRD PLACE
Choi Lok 6A
Dear Lok,
Hi! I am you from 30 years old. How are you? I am so filled with questions for you!
I am in P.6 and life is seriously hard for me. Well, mum says the harder I do in school makes it easier for me at work in the future. Is life easy for you now? If it is, you should thank me! Haha!
Talking about work, what are you doing? Are you a teacher? Or are you a doctor? I prefer being a teacher. I enjoy sharing what I learnt with others. Also, I met several good teachers in the past few years who inspired me that being a teacher is great job.
Do you have children? I hope you have two. One will be lonely for him/her, like me now. Three is too much noise, so two is the perfect number. Your children must be similarly aged with me, right? Are you in trouble? I know puberty is very hard to deal with.
What about music? Do you still love playing the piano and the cello like I do now? Mum says she wants me to learn playing the guitar this summer holiday. I’m so excited! Wow, then I’ll know how to play 5 types of music instruments! I love singing and I have been learning vocal for a few years. Are you now a singer or a vocal teacher?
I am really looking forward to becoming you, an adult. As an adult, I know I have more freedom but also more responsibility. When I look back 30 years later, I will have no regrets!
Love,
Lok (30 years old)

Put an End to Bullying MERIT
Kasen Hsu 6A
Dear Head of the Education Bureau Kevin Yeung,
In this Day and age, school violence is omnipresent in our city and thus has received much attention lately. It is not uncommon to find teenage victims who have been bullied before be it verbally, physically or socially. They have been beaten up, called names, asked for money or cigarettes or even forced to do things against their will. In view of this, I am writing to give some useful pointers on which the Education Bureau and school should do to ameliorate the problem.
The first and foremost suggestion is that schools should create a safe environment for reporting bullying. Victims and witnesses need courage to lodge complaint about bullies and feel more comfortable behind the digital wall. Therefore, schools should be funded to establish a school safety committee and set up an email address or asocial media account for students to report problem which they encounter. Moreover, the committee can conduct surveys to find out how often bullying occurs, where it happens and how students, teachers or parents intervene.
Besides an effective bullying reporting system, it is of paramount importance that schools should show students how to control their emotions and improve their interpersonal skills. The Hong Kong education systems has long been criticized as exam-oriented and neglecting other aspects such as moral and social education. Through talks and workshops, students should learn how to express their dismay and anger in appropriate ways and maintain a harmonious relationship with others. Schools can also offer activities such as meditation and sports classes for students to reduce stress and reinforce more social interactions. In these activities, students can develop a culture of acceptance, tolerance and respect and establish a positive vibe at school.
Last but not least, we should never overlook the fact that most, if not all, of the students have experienced or witnessed bullying at school. As a result, schools must be responsible for educating students how to deal with bullying properly. For instance, students should learn to raise their confidence and send a clear message to the bullies that they aren’t afraid and dislike what he or she is doing. Furthermore, they must speak up and get an adult involved by telling a parent, a teacher or a security guard if, unfortunately, bullying happens. It is everyone’s duty to help stop bullying.
To sum up, schools and the government have to encourage students to report bullying, educate them to express their feeling appropriately and enhance their communication skills. They should also provide an opportunity for students to learn how to cope with bullying. All forms of violence are detrimental to teenagers mental or even physical development. It is my genuine hope that schools and the government can put an end to violence as soon as possible through joint endeavors.
Your faithfully,
Kasen Hsu

A Future Shop MERIT
Max Ma 6A
Industry giants are closing hundreds of the traditional “brick and mortar” retail stores. Soon, old stores will be replaced by newer and more efficient store. Here are three characteristics a future store should have.
To start off with, a future store should be digital. Although there may be a mall or two next to your house, there are always more things to buy on the Internet. For example, you can buy a can of toenails on the Internet (not like there’s a use for it though)!
Secondly, a future shop should have ultra-quick delivery. Recently, a lot of consumer’s complain about the delivery speed of products. Two-hour drone delivery is just a matter of time and the famous company Amazon is already investing in 30 minutes drone delivery.
Last but not least, a future shop should be able to connect with home appliances. If future stores can be connected with our fridge, our fridge then can tell what we usually eat and order for us, we then would have to accept the order, repeat and we would never find our snack stash empty again.
To put it simply, a future shop should consist of these three characteristics, it should be digital, have ultra-fast delivery and be able to connect with our home appliances. Soon, we will be shopping in a store like that!

Should Smoking be Banned for Everyone? MERIT
Nicholas Cheng 6A
Do you know what costs ninety-six billion dollars a year, steals fourteen years of life and actually can be perverted easily? Many people smoke nowadays some to fit in their peers and some to relieve stress, but they have never thought of the terrible consequences that smoking can bring. In my opinion, smoking should be banned for everyone. Read on to find out the risks and drawback of smoking to support my stance.
To begin with, smoking is obviously detrimental to our physical heath. Smoking causes a long list of dangerous diseases. Smoking not only causes cancers and heart diseases, but also makes us suffer from hearing loss, cancers, heart diseases, but also makes us suffer from hearing loss, strokes, glaucoma or even more. According to CDC one in five deaths are caused by smoking disease every year. Although the technology nowadays could save a few, it definitely costs a bunch.
Additionally, smoking effects our outward appearance negatively.
Imagine losing your smooth skin and wrinkles begin to appear on your skin when you are only around thirty, due to the skin being deprived. Not only this, but it also impacts our nails, teeth, gums color, making the turn yellow. Smoking undoubtedly causes major ham to our appearance.
Last but not least. Smoking is a huge threat to the environment and those around you. Smoking contaminates the air. Would it shock you to hear that smoking releases about two point six billion kilograms of toxic CO2 in the air every year? Plus, according to research, three thousand nonsmoking adults die of diseases caused by smoking every year.
All-in all, smoking is detrimental to our physical health, outward appearance and environment, so I strongly believe that smoking should be banned for everyone. Now, throw all of your nasty cigarettes into the bin, and quit smoking to help yourself and the others around you!

A “Perfect” Holiday MERIT
Cameron Chu 6B
Last year, I had a “perfect” holiday that made me feel so “great”.
That day, my family and I went to Disneyland to play. When we arrived there, I quickly went to queue up. Unfortunately, the entrance machine was out of order and we needed to wait for an hour. Finally, we got inside.
Later, I saw the magnificent view of Disneyland. Suddenly, a girl who was holding an ice-cream fell on my new shirt. I screamed loudly and became a fierce tiger. I scolded the little girl, the people around protected the girl and scolded me severely. I was embarrassed and ran away.
After a while, my sister urged me go on the roller coaster with her. I was very scared of it. The roller coaster was horrible. Its speed was so fast that I vomited. I really didn’t enjoy the ride at all. In the end, I had to go to the medical room to have a rest.
In the evening, we went to a themed restaurant to have dinner. A pickpocket came near while I was eating. All of a sudden, I found my wallet had disappeared. I was so upset that the wallet was my birthday present from my grandfather. It was priceless and memorable. I was very angry and miserable. What a “perfect” holiday I had!
After this incident, I had a dark shadow about Disneyland.

A “Perfect” Holiday MERIT
Law Chun 6C
A “perfect” holiday is different for everybody. Some may say they would do “meaningful” activities to help the society. Others would make use of own time and study as much as possible. But for me, I have a completely different opinion on a “perfect” holiday.
In the morning, I would wake up at eight, call my friends, and go play soccer. We would run around in circles and have friendly matches. After sweating for 2 hours, we would go to the sport centers, grab a coke and cool ourselves down from head to toe with the super air- conditioners. After that, I would go back home with lunch with my mum. Then they would gather in my home to play games. We would play some Monopoly, then play some PUGB until six. Then, I would have dinner, watch a movie, then sleep. At 3 a.m., our group of friends would gather and watch a Premier League game.
Most of you would ask, “How about your homework?” Homework will be cancelled, as homework kills our time to enjoy the holidays! Perfect!
You might say, “This shows that Law Chun is lazy!” And I do admit it. But ask yourself from deep down in your heart: Who doesn’t want to lie on their bed, watch TV, and enjoy their holiday?
