Can Money Buy Happiness? SECOND PLACE
Thomas Wong 6C
Do you think money can buy happiness? Well, I don’t think so. Happiness is a difficult to define as everyone possesses different perspectives of happiness based on their own experience. I believe money could not bring eternal joy into your life. I will offer three reasons to support my stance.
Firstly, if you allow money to become your source of happiness, you will never be satisfied. You will always want more because the beautiful, shiny new thing will become old and shabby one day. With technology introducing new products at lightning speed, there will always be a dangling carrot for you to reach for.
Secondly, money can’t buy friendship. When you have a genuine friendship, your friends will stay by your side no matter what, but if you choose to buy your friendship with money, they will leave you once you have lost your valuable possessions. Bill Gates once said, ‘When you have money in your hand, you forget who you are. But when you don’t have money in your hands, everyone forgets who you are.’ So, you do not need money in order to be respected.
Furthermore, money can only be used to purchase material goods. If you break something, money could bring it back. If you lose a valuable item, money could bring that back too. But no matter how much money you have, you could never bring back the time or a loved one who passed away. So money, cannot buy you everything you want in life.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that money cannot bring eternal joy into your life because purchasing materials will only result in a limited amount of satisfaction. Money also cannot buy the most valuable things in life, such as time, friendship and love. Rather, these things have to be earned. Don’t you agree that money can’t buy happiness? I’m sure everyone will agree with me.

The Future Phones THIRD PLACE
Edgar Tsang 6B
Nowadays, if you walk onto the streets, you are bound to see people looking downwards. They are most likely looking at their mobile phones. However, what will mobile phones be like in the future?
I think that phones will be more flexible, being able to fold, roll up or even stretch itself into various shapes and sizes. The game-changing material is ordinary nylon fiber, also known as the ‘artificial muscle’. To make it sturdier, scientists have combined it with alloy. You could stretch it to the size of a tablet and back to the size of a rubber. Thanks to such flexible materials, even if you dropped your beloved mobile phone, it wouldn’t break easily.
Moreover, you will not be amazing in the future when your phone is able to hover in midair and follow you around. It does that by sucking air in from its sides, and squirting the compacted air from below. It moves by changing the direction of the air it squirts out. So, it basically resembles a jellyfish. You no longer need to hold up the phone, it could simply float in front of you!
If you fold the four corners up, your future phone project a hologram. It is because there are four mini projectors in the four corners. When you do a video call, you can see the projected body of the person you are talking to.
A lot of people drop their phones into toilets or bathtubs, but because it is coated by the material named Janus Bilayer, it would simply fold itself up and become waterproof!
So, you would no longer have to worry about wet phones or looking ‘down’ at your phone. Instead, you would look ‘up’ at your phone in the future.

The Future Phones MERIT

As the future descends upon us, there is no doubt that the technology we use every single day is also evolving at every second. What will mobile phones be like, twenty to fifty years from now?
Mobile phones that we use in our current era are slim and sleek. But, could we eliminate its state as a solid, something that we can carry or get ahold of, into something completely different? In my opinion, future phones are going to be hologram-like, and we would be able to access them in the palm of our hands. I think that we are going to get integrated chips inserted into the palms of our hands through some kind of dermatologic surgery, and it’s going to be very fast, like getting a vaccine. We can turn it on by double-tapping the chip, and a projector beneath the surface of our skin projects a hologram, accessing a type of future phone. Alternatively, we can activate it by voice recognition, in which your phone has your voice registered and you can use that feature to access your phone.
Furthermore, there is going to be internet and Wi-Fi with zero latency in the future. The data packets of internet and Wi-Fi are going to be inserted into your phone by default, and you don’t have to go to Wi-Fi towers to get better reception.
This is only my personal estimation on what phones in the future will be like. As Doc Brown says in Back to the Future III, ‘The future is whatever you make it!’ I can’t wait to find out what phones will be like in the future!

Ice Cream MERIT
Mitch Milas 6A
So it was just a plain old summer day that day and I was just strolling on the boardwalk in Florida. I was looking at a weirdly square button on the beach. I didn’t know how that button even got there in the first place. My curiosity led to it and I pressed it. A hole appeared filled to the brim with the delicious ice cream snack.
I picked one out and started licking it. The delicious taste of chocolate marshmallow fudge filled my mouth. It was like paradise. Soon I devoured the whole thing in one go, and took out another one. Watermelon breeze this time. I couldn’t stop. One after another ice cream was being eaten, and my mouth was filled with cold air. The taste felt breezy. Not long, the one-foot hole was empty. Something caught my eye. A piece of Willy Wonka’s chocolate by itself in the hole. I took it and opened it, overlooking the fact that there was a note. Was it a golden ticket? No. Big bold letters engraved on a tiny piece of gold paper ‘Jump in’. I knew nothing.
Suddenly, I felt like something struck me, collapsing in a heap of foggy memories. Cries of joy filled the air that instant, and moments later, I was sitting on my brown leather bed, looking at the gray-tinted dusty ceiling. Not long later, that adventure vanished in my brain like a lost memory.

An Unexpected Test MERIT
Max Sze 6B
Bob and John were walking on a rocky beach, right before the final math exam of the year, to ‘relax’ before the big day. As they were chatting, Bob lost his footing and fell into a small hole. Seconds after the incident, John realized what had happened ad tired to help him out, but also fell in in the process.
In the hole, there was a small cave, which seemed to be endless. Because the two were adventurous, both crawled in, one after another. Lots of climbing later, they found themselves in a war bunker. There was an entrance that was covered by a giant boulder, and on the other side was a secret exit for soldiers when they were under attack. The two thought they were free, but there was a difficult math problem, and its answer was the code for the lock. That question coincidentally was in the syllabus for the upcoming math exam. They knew it was their only way out, so they started attempting to solve it.
Bob and John realized that they had lost their memory and forgot how to solve those problems. Luckily, the combination lock was only three digits long so they just guessed their way out.
After both of them got out, the sun had already gone down, and the two ran home as fast as they could so they could study more that night, as they acknowledged that they didn’t have nearly as much knowledge needed for the exam. Then, in math classes, they focused all the time and didn’t talk to classmates to prevent memory loss again.

A Memory Recall MERIT
Sky Lau 6C
As Astro and I travelled to the island to find my lost memory, I felt a weird and fishy aura coming from the mist that covered the island – danger.
‘Watch o –’ we crashed into something before Astro could his sentence.
When I woke up, I saw stalagmites hanging from the ceiling. Astro murmured and stomped the ground, ‘The mist turned out to be some kind of illusion. When we crashed, I saw the wall weaken, and we hit a wall of obsidian. I woke up in the water and we were glowing, as if we could manipulate water, so I grabbed you and dashed to the nearest cave.’
Ahead of us, we saw a hole leading to a light source. The hole was very narrow and we crawled out one by one, to reveal a beach filled with pebbles and connected to a civilized forest. In the distance, a spark of light – my memory – illuminated the entire forest. The spark enlightened the island – my lost memory.
We were walking through the forest and suddenly we were stopped by some people, all armed with advanced technology. Astro and I summoned a geyser of water and ran away from the guards, dodging and blocking lasers shot by them.
After 2 minutes of escaping, we finally reached the spark of light – my memory. As soon as I touched it, I started to glow brightly like a supernova and my memory was complete. I remembered I was a member of this civilization, which meant this quest brought me home. I spoke in their ‘unknown’ language, explained what had happened to me and we weren’t attacked again.
What an adventure to regain my lost memory!

The Three Forgottenland’s Boys in a Mini-adventure MERIT
Isaac Cheung 6E
‘Where are we?’ asked Bong sheepishly, he was lying in a hole in the sand, confused.
‘I think we’re at the beach,’ answered clever Hinson, ‘but why does this grain of sand look enormous?’
Just then, a human-sized crab came trotting past, unaware, of the boys. That’s when realization struck. The land wasn’t bigger, they were smaller, very small indeed.
The last thing they remembered was being chased by the final-escaped octopus guard, the being shot by the angry mollusk’s laser beam (at least they thought it was a laser beam). Then it was all blank. They had lost their memories.
In the distance was their land of gadgets, about a mile away. They were guarded by several marine guards, including the angry octopus. Desperate, the boys had no choice but to wander along the beach to their prized gizmos.
Suddenly, a crab as fast as lightning popped out of its hole, attacking the boys. It seemed to be one of the guards. As the scaredy boys shouted for help, calm Chi-yin thought of something he learnt. If you stand on the back of a crab, it can’t pinch you! Leaping into action, he wheelchaired around the crab. He was a racer on wheels!
Realizing the strategy, Hinson dragged Bong out of the way, and they were able to sneak past.
Next was the octopus itself. Hinson thought that if they could lure it onto land, they could easily get past it. Fortunately, the octopus was so angry that it fell for the trap.
The boys got through swiftly, leaving the octopus sulking behind. They returned to normal due to the ‘sacred’ charm of their gadgets. Although there were no sacred items to be found, they were satisfied. Bong threw the portal and Hinson threw the dice. Their adventure continues!
