Tsunami SECOND PLACE
Alfred Ng 5B
I was in Thailand,
the year the tsunami hit,
the night before so quiet,
so perfectly moonlit.
The morning so warm,
the sun pierced the sky.
Everyone enjoying their holiday,
No one should have died.
The birds went deftly quiet,
Seas turned and disappeared,
Then came the rushing waves,
The worst thing people feared.
People running round shouting,
“Make for higher ground!”
The church bells ringing profusely,
Screams, tides, bells, a loud sound.
People taken by undercurrents,
Never to be seen again.
Families separated, broken hearts,
For some, the rescue all in vain.
The church bells and animals,
The eerie silence that occurred,
If we had known the warning signs,
Peoples’ vision wouldn’t have been blurred.
P.S. I have only seen a tsunami on the news, fortunately.

The Monster of the Deep THIRD PLACE
Ken Pan 5C
So I’ve got this imaginary thing
Lurking in the back of my head.
It’s hideous, wild and terrifying,
Especially at night when I go to bed.
(My dear beloved psychiatrist,
This might sound a bit scary,
But I can continue, if you insist.
Please listen closely…)
This monstrous creature lives in the sea,
And with its gigantic appetite,
It is as big and vile as these can be.
Its vicious, lethal bite
Will snap anything in two!
Behold! The Monster of the Deep!
It has loads of eyes – in all, fifty-two!
And dragon’s teeth! That was what gave me the creeps!
You thought that was all? No! There’s more!
There are enormous crab claws as huge as skyscrapers!
Not just one pair – but four!
And gooey, slimy tentacles each with countless suckers!
It’s quite frightening, so to me, getting rid of it is a huge deal.
So please help me discard this monster.
Do believe me, it’s quite real.
Any cure would do – electrical shock, brain surgery, or whatever.
Just hurry up – I don’t think I can stand it any longer!

I’m a Water Hero! MERIT
Eros Tung 5B
As you know, people nowadays always waste water. I am sad every time I see people wasting water. If we don’t do something now, the earth will have no more water in the future.
People have already been used to wasting water. I am a water hero so my responsibility is to tell people not to waste water.
There are many ways to waste water. For example, playing water guns and having a bath instead of a shower are ways to waste water.
So, how to be a water hero? Let me tell you. A water hero must use water wisely. There will be tasks for you to do. A water hero’s responsibility is to tell people to have good use of our precious water instead of wasting it.
The task that I did was to use just a small bowl of water to survive for two days. It was hard but I managed to do it, and finally I became a water here!
Have you heard of “Fire Hero”? of course not. If we don’t have fire, we can still survive but we just need to eat things that don’t need cooking. But if we don’t have water we will die of thirst.
So human beings, let’s be members of our “water heroes” and help save the earth now!

A Day in the Life of a Water Droplet MERIT
Ian Liu 5C
I am a water droplet and I travel around the world every day. I travel by flowing, raining, splashing, storing, being drunk and more.
This morning, I was woken up by a splash, we were falling down a waterfall. Waterfalls are important, and why are they so important? Because of us, we could fall down and more cogs to the wheels to make energy. After falling down, we flowed down a river. I got separated from the others and went into a small stream leading to a garden. The farmer poured me into the soil and I went into the plants. Why is water so important to plants? Water helps plants by transporting important nutrients through the plants. Without enough water, the plants droop, so water helps a plant stand. Water carries the dissolved sugar and other nutrients through the plants. So without the proper balance of water, the plants are not only malnourished, but also physically weak and cannot support their own weight. After that, I landed on a leaf and the sun evaporated me. I was rising up in the sky.
I saw Kowloon, Tai Po, Sha Tin when more of the water droplets landed beside me. An hour later, the cloud was heavier and it started to rain. Luckily, I landed on the Shing Mun reservoir. I got stored and went to the water treatment plant. Why do we need to filter the water? Water needs to be filtered before drinking to protect ourselves from germs and other contaminants. Filtration of water can prevent humans and animals from suffering various diseases. I was germless and ready for drinking. Drinking water helps maintain the balance of body fluids: bodies are composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, maintenance of body temperature etc; water can also help control calories: for years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy, while water doesn’t have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help.
Then, a little boy drank me. I was in his body and I helped him to protect his spinal cord and joints. I also helped him to remove waste, aid in digestion, prevented him from becoming dehydrated and more. After urination, I went through tubes and waited. Ten minutes later, I was in a sewage treatment station. It is important to have sewage treatment because if we go to the sea directly, we will be dirty for the fish to drink as water.
There are a few steps of sewage treatment. Step 1: Screening and pumping. The incoming wastewater passes through screening equipment where object such as rags, wood fragment, plastics and grease are removed. Step 2: Grit removal. In this step, heavy but fine material such as sand and gravel is removed from the waste water. Step 3: Primary setting. The material removed is pumped off to the bottom and the waste water exits the tank from the top. Step 4: Aeration. In this step, the wastewater receives most of its treatment. Through biological degradation, the pollutants are consumed by microorganisms and transformed into water and nitrogen. Followed by step 5: Secondary settling. Step 6: Filtration. Step 7 : Disinfection and Step 8: Oxygen uptake.
After sewage treatment, I was in the sea again, waiting for evaporation. And it was night time. The water journey today has finished, I followed the cloud in the sky and slept.

Tsunami MERIT
Benedict Cheung 5D
Tsunami is a series of ocean waves,
Sending surges of water onto the ground.
Unexpectedly sometimes it might come.
Not a single omen could be found.
A violent energy is released underground.
Inevitable damage is promised to be claimed.
Hazardous waves are formed in the ocean trench.
It is like a fierce monster awakening undersea,
Triggering off a tremendous act of revenge,
Showing its absolute sovereignty over the sea.
The earthquake is often not strongly felt on the ground.
Hundreds of houses are, however, built along the coast.
Eerie disaster is on the verge and near at hand.
Growl, growl, growl, it murmured in the far sea.
Roar, roar, roar, it thundered towards the coast.
Off the coast the villagers are scared to flee.
Up the hill they speed to the most.
No one dared to utter a sound.
Deadliest tragedies lay all around.

An Imaginary Sea Creature MERIT
Tung Man Hei 5E
This imaginary sea creature,
which lives in the deep sea,
It looks very different,
Like you and like me,
It has three scary eyes,
And a tiny glow on his nose,
And a giant belly-button.
But no one could find its toes.
One day, it vowed to himself,
“I must look for some silver and gold!
Then I will find some fish as soldiers,
They will do whatever they are told!”
So, it swam, and swam, and swam,
and swam, and swam non-stop,
Until it finally reached a cave,
With a danger sign on top.
It rushed into the cave
And didn't hesitate,
It kept on going and going and going until
It bumped into a big blocked gate.
It used its claws to unlock the gate,
Then it kept looking for the gold,
At last, it met a dead-end,
But found nothing-but some mold.
It suddenly saw a glimpse of light,
And thought It was a diamond,
But it was a burning dynamite – “BOOM!”
Then everything was blown to an island.
I really don’t know whether if,
The creature could stand the low pressure,
But, as me and you are sure,
The creature has no luck on finding treasure.

Tsunami MERIT
Malcolm Wong 5E
The thunder struck
The ocean rumbled
A wave as big as a giant rose up from the sea
Devouring everything in its way
Monstrous, howling wind
Water, crashing onto the shore
And all I could see, were crushed buildings
All I could do was scream out loud
I was as scared as a lost child
I was shaking like a leaf
I couldn’t seem to stand on my own feet
Then I thought how I could save the city
Then I ran straight up to confront the monster
And shouted for it to go away
But the monster refused to leave
Then I asked the monster
What I could do for it
The monster replied
“The only thing you can help me with is to
Let me continue to eat the city!”
Then after that the monster scooped me up
And swallowed me up with one big gulp.
