Primary 6 awarded pieces* (2nd place, 3rd place and merits)
A Letter to a Government Official SECOND PLACE
Lok Sze Chai 6D
Dear Mr. Kevin Yeung
How are you? I am a Ying Wa Primary 6 student. Being a primary student for almost six years, I think I am qualified to give some valid suggestions to improve existing school police and learning environment in order to give a happy school life for our next generations.
As you said earlier before Chinese New Year, you urged the schools to lessen holiday homework for pupils so that they could free up time for traditional activities such as visiting relatives. I totally agree with you. I am quite disappointed that there's no follow-up on this issue. I think the Education Bureau should impose laws on restricting schools to give out any holiday homework. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, holiday means a time when someone does not go to work or school but is free to do what they want such as travel or relax. However, we need to spend most of our time doing holiday homework. Take me as an example, I have to do 12 pieces of homework during Easter Holiday. I am not free-to do what I want. I can't really make use of the holiday to relax and escape from the homework pressure. I don’t have much time to play with my friends and family. I am trapped in my room to think and write. Therefore, I strongly request the Education Bureau cancel all holiday homework and give students an actual holiday to do whatever they want.
Besides, bullying is a serious problem in schools. Some students think it is fun to bully others by calling them nicknames or prank them. This kind of action is totally wrong. Students should help each other in order to improve each other’s weaknesses, but not to discriminate them. I think schools should give 2 lessons per month in order to discuss about bullying and learn more about anti-bully so as to prevent teasing and discrimination between students.
Last but not least, I think we should cancel BCA. It is not necessary to drill students in order to improve schools’ ranking. Though the government claims that the new program will not affect the schools nor the students, schools will still give students a lot of past papers to do and train them up. Why do governments always impose policies to increase students' pressure rather than give them a happy school life?
Hope you will consider my suggestions and do something to give a better learning environment for all Hong Kong students.

Using Facebook Makes People Depressed? THIRD PLACE
Geoff Wong 6A
In modern times, Facebook, a social media, is getting more and more important and popular. One will even feels proud of being a Facebook user! However, the problem now is, will people feel depressed if they use Facebook? The answer is an obvious “yes”, for the following four reasons.
First and foremost, “Likes”. These “Likes” represent peers’ recognition, which means that if people get not enough “Likes”, they will feel less accepted and as a result feel depressed.
Second, photo sharing. Many Facebook users are keen on posting and sharing their decent photos on Facebook like delicious meals and wonderful trips. Yet, if other users see them, people will feel jealous ad low-spirited.
Third, life-long history. Ex-president of USA Barack Obama warned us of the dangers of putting too much personal information on Internet social networks like Facebook, as these information can come back and haunt users anytime, because users cannot delete them, which makes them saddened and regretful.
Last but not least, cyber bullying. People who don’t agree with you will probably give you “Dislike” at will, unnecessary and malicious comments galore in order to defeat or hurt you, and make you feel down-hearted.
In a nutshell, Facebook will make people feel depressed because of recognition dependence, envy and unwelcome messages. Believe it or not, I don’t use Facebook!

The Worst Holiday of My Life MERIT
Michael Lo 6C
You know, trips are supposed to be fun, but some can be bad. We went to a camp for two days and the result? Very bad!
About a week before Chinese New Year Holiday, my mum told us that we were going on a trip at the nature reserve for camping. My brother and my dad weren’t so keen on the idea (they hate outdoorsy things) but I liked it.
We were short on camping supplies so we had to shop at the shopping centre. Dad said we won’t need much, and he would spend little money. But the camping shop had a lot of cool stuff and Dad got carried away. He spent a LOT and made me promise not to tell Mum. (I promised) “We could have stayed in a nice hotel, it would have been cheaper.” Dad said to the cashier. “It doesn’t beat the scent of fresh air camping!” he chuckled as he took Dad’s money.
After that, we got into the car and hit the highway. But, the roads were windy and soon we got lost. Dad blamed Mum for not reading the Google GPS immediately. Mum blamed Dad for not listening to her. They both blamed each other. We used three hours to get on the right track. And when we did, we rolled over a broken glass bottle and got a flat tire. We phoned the police, who eventually showed up.
It took ages to fix it, and by the time we reached the nature reserve, it was already nightfall. We all unpacked the car and set up the tent. By now, my stomach was grumbling like a tractor falling off a cliff, but it was too late to make dinner. Dad said he would cook a huge breakfast in the morning, but I was very hungry and took out the secret stash of biscuits I had stored in my bag. Crumbs went into my sleeping bag and I was wriggling around. My brother was very annoyed and hated it. Brilliant! I was about to wriggle more when I heard snoring. It was like thunder, because it was REALLY thunder. The wind blew away the tent and water splashed onto us. We all screamed and rushed to the car for cover. No one slept at all. It was miserable!
The next day, Dad tried to get his money back. He complained a lot, but it didn’t work. Mum collected all of our soggy belongings and we went home. What a bad trip!

Forgotten MERIT
Vincent Song 6C
It is of course a mystery,
How once we play and chase.
How we would feel no misery,
And joy’s what we embrace.
How once we laugh forever,
And frown at stupid jokes.
We don’t care whatsoever,
And play around old oaks.
We use imagination,
to eat, to talk, to play.
We don’t need information,
We find them in our way.
How once we’re not restricted
By knowledge or our lives.
No good or bad or endangered,
We freely think and thrive.
It is of course a mystery,
That we’ve learnt to forget.
Forget that blissful history,
No sadness or regret.
It is of course a mystery,
How once our heart’s so clear.
Yet now for power we’re hungry,
And pureness is never near.
It is of course a mystery,
And we’ve simply forgotten.

Future Airplane MERIT
Anthony Cheung 6D
What do you expect from a future airplane?
Let’s start with the ones to be made about 50 years later. Those planes will be a lot faster than the ones nowadays, about 3000km/h. And since the many airline companies will compete with each other and hope to get more money, the planes will also be a lot larger and more convenient (there’s no guarantee that the planes will be safer, though).
Now, let’s talk about the airplanes in the 2090s. At that time, most of the airplanes will become “space-planes”. These planes will fly at the height of 25000m to 100000m, a lot closer to space, to gain more speed. They are capable of flying at the speed of km/h, which means travelling from Hong Kong to New York will be no more than thirty minutes.
Now let’s skip to the “space-planes” two hundred years later. At that time, the planes will have a new mission: to carry humans to other planets. Those planes will need to be much, much bigger and so fast that it’s totally unimaginable. Maybe ten times the speed of sound? A hundred times? Or even the speed of light?
We don’t know. Nobody knows. The only way to find out is to MAKE IT HAPPEN. So let’s work hard, study hard, and you might be the future plane designer – the first one on Earth to build a light speed plane.

Future Airplane MERIT
Hayden Cheung 6D
The Wright brothers made the first plane in 1903. Since then, people have tried to make different planes, and that is how the Airbus 380 and Boeing 777 were born. But technology is developing extremely fast and these “nowadays giants” may be forgotten in 2047 and will never be heard of then. If they will be forgotten quickly, what can replace them? You know, a future airplane.
It takes two words to say future airplane, but building one needs thousands of robots. Or maybe millions. No matter the number, advanced and new technologies should be used. In my opinion, a future airplane should have a powerful thruster powered by antimatter. When antimatter touches air, it would explode, causing enough energy to destroy a city. Bits and bits of antimatter would be pushed out of a tiny tube, exploding bit by bit, making the plane speed up, making it way faster than the ones now, so transportation between countries will become quicker. Then, NASA will come and say, “Use it in space!” Ok, then we need to have a cloning machine. Why? A cloning machine can clone different machines for different usages, including probes for circumnavigation of the Earth or other planets. The machine can also clone fuel and food also. Last but not least, the plane should be able to transfer into different dimension things. You can go back to a weekend and have 2 more days of holiday! How cool is that! That means, you can time travel, be a stickman or be teleported after the trip!
Ok, enough talking. Did I say that A380 and Boeing 777 will be gone in 2047? It is now 2018. Let me wait for 20 years before I build it…

Future Airplane MERIT
Alex Leung 6D
Can you imagine what future airplane will look like? In my opinion, they will be more convenient, comfortable, multi-functional and reliable.
Future airplanes will be more environmentally friendly, while electric power will be a major stream in the future. Bio-fuel will also play a major role in airplane propulsion. The design of future airplanes will also be mere streamlined to lower noise levels so that they can fly much closer to where people live and work.
Nowadays, airports need long runways for airplanes to take-off. In the future, airplanes can use a method of vertical take-off, like military planes and space shuttles. The advantages include wasting less space and allowing more airplanes to take-off and land at the same time.
In the future, airplanes with foldable wings will appear. Besides reducing runway length, it is more fuel-efficient and increases the ability and flexibility to control the airplane. And for small airplanes, airplanes can be taken apart and packed away after a flight, saving space for plane owners.
Future airplanes will be faster and supersonic planes will appear to bring passengers swiftly. To avoid breaking the sound barrier, during acceleration, a new design of air gaps that are filled with a soft material in the middle will be added to lower the noise levels. Passengers can enjoy a fast, quiet and comfortable traveling experience.
Future airplanes will redesign passengers' inflight entertainment experience. There will be no physical windows inside the cabin but LED screen windows that can show the view outside by a camera or as a screen to touch. Each seat also comes with an in-built VR helmet so that passengers can enjoy movies and video game with VR technology.
Aren’t future airplanes amazing? Yes, they are really fascinating. The design future of airplanes is a combination of innovation, creativity and technology. I am looking forward to experiencing an airplane ride in the future.
