On June 5, 8 and 9 of this year, 150 Ying Wa Primary School Junior (P.1-P.3) boys have metamorphosized into a hive of “Spelling Bees” in the unprecedented Inter-class Spelling Bee Competition.
There were two rounds to the competition – the Semi-finals and the Championship Finals. Ten “bees” were chosen by a lucky draw from each class as representatives. In the first round, each bee had to spell a word correctly under 6 seconds. There are 20 words in total. A great team of English Captains would help to record and mark the bees’ answers. The three classes in the year form that achieved the highest scores would be enrolled into the Championship Finals, which were held immediately after the Semi-finals.
In the Championship Finals, three students were chosen by lucky drawn from the three remaining competing classes. This time, the student had to spell the word out in front of a much larger audience and the time limit was only 15 seconds. The words would certainly be more challenging, but our boys were more than ready to fight for the bee “crown” for their class!
After three nerve-racking but rewarding lunch recesses of only 25 minutes, the following hives of “bee kings” were crowned:

Congratulations to the Champion Classes, who showed calmness at the face of pressure and uncertainty. A big shout out to the 150 “bees”, English Captains and students who came to watch and cheer for their classmates! A big thank-you to all the English teachers for supporting the bees! Next year, everyone in each class will have a chance to fight for their class, so don’t lose hope if you were not picked this time. For now, why don’t we just let the school continue to be spellbound?
