Chapter 1
Tom and his family were having dinner. Tom said, “Mum, at night when I was going to sleep, I heard some mysterious sounds, it's like “dong, dong...”
Tom’s dad said,” Maybe our neighbour Mr. Lau was still playing his musical instrument at night.”
Tom’s mum said, “You shouldn’t be so worried about it. It must be Mr. Lau. He loves music so much. I can complain to him tomorrow.”
After dinner, Tom did some homework and went to sleep. He slept badly and had a nightmare. It was about a monster that wanted to eat him...
“Bang!” “Whao!” Tom woke up with a fright. He looked at the clock, it was 3:00 am.
Suddenly, there were some sounds from the basement. Tom thought, “It is definitely not Mr. Lau. They are coming from the basement!”
Slowly, Tom took a torch and walked to the basement. The basement was full of dust. Tom’s family had put every old thing in the basement. But the strange thing was that there was a big hole in the centre of the basement! Tom was scared. When he wanted to go back to his room, he heard some footsteps and someone talking…
He quickly hid behind some boxes.
Chapter 2
The basement’s door was opened. Two horrible creatures came in. One of them was green. Some saliva was dripping from its mouth. Its hair was made of green worms. They were squirming and wiggling. The other monster was bald and had four hands and six long legs. It had only one eye.
The green creature said, “Is the weapon ready yet?”
The bald monster replied, “Don't be so hurried. The weapon is very complicated. But after the weapon is ready, we can destroy the humans immediately and the world will be ours!”
The green creature laughed. Tom was terrified. He watched as the two hideous creatures jumped into the hole.
Tom ran to his parents’ room and woke them up. He said nervously, “Mum, Dad, there are two creatures, two creatures! And a hole! A big hole!”
“What on earth are you talking about?” Mum asked furiously. “It's only six o'clock. Today is Saturday! You don’t need to go to school!”
“No... but...” Tom muttered.
“Go back to sleep now！” Mum snapped.
Tom was frustrated and tried to open the basement door again. But the door was locked. Tom, without any better option, went back to his room.
Chapter 3
“It was such a tiring day!” Tom thought, picking up the broomstick. Mum was very angry after what he did in the morning. She made him do all the housework.
“Tom, wash the dishes now!” Mum shouted. Tom nearly fell into the rubbish bin.
At night, Tom was forced by Mum to tidy his room before sleeping. But Tom knew that he won’t sleep tonight. He planned to go down to the hole and find out what was actually happening in the basement.
At 2:00 am, Tom got out of his bed. He had been pretending to sleep in the last few hours. He was sure that his parents were both asleep and took a torch. He knew that it would be dangerous so he took his grandpa’s walking stick too. He felt frightened
when he saw the hole again. Slowly, he tried to climb down into the hole but he slipped and fell into it!
He thought that he would fall on the floor and hurt his back but instead, he fell on something soft. It was a big piece of sponge. It was very thick but dirty. He lit up his torch so that he could see the path. Finally, he found a room. He opened the door. It was dim inside. There were different kinds of potions. There was a potion on the table in the middle of the room.
While Tom was exploring the room, he heard footsteps. He wanted to hide behind the shelves but he accidentally knocked over a bottle! The potion fell on the floor. “Oh no!” thought Tom. Fortunately, he managed to hide behind the shelves in time.
“Bang!” The door was kicked opened and a voice came, “Who's there?” It was the bald monster! It saw the broken potion and roared, “Who has broken my precious potion? I want you to stand in front of me now!”
No one replied.
“Ugh! Whatever! It was not a good potion actually. And let me test my weapon now!” He took the potion which was on the table and dropped a few drops on some vegetable. After that, it gave the vegetables to a rabbit. The rabbit ate it happily. Suddenly, it started to change. Its body became blue and much larger. Its eyes became red and its teeth became as sharp as knives.
“That’s it!” the bald monster cheered. While it was cheering, Tom crept out of the door quietly. He went back the same way as he had come and climbed up the hole.

Chapter 4
Tom ran out of the basement. He was panting heavily. He was so tired that he lied on the floor. He thought, “What can I do now? Nobody will ever believe me! The world is in terrible danger now!” He stood up and went back to the living room. It was 7:00 am now. Tom’s parents always woke up at 9:00 am if it was a holiday. They didn’t go to work on weekends.
Suddenly, he saw something huge jump pass. It was the rabbit which had eaten the poisoned vegetables! It was carrying the bottle of poison which the monster used to poison the vegetables. The rabbit jumped out of the window. Tom opened the door and chased it. But the rabbit had disappeared.
In the afternoon, Tom and his family were watching the news. Suddenly, Tom’s attention was dragged to special news. The reporter said, “Six people turned into humungous giants after eating some food at a farm. The police and the Food Detective Academy have warned the citizens not to eat any food from the farm. The giants are still missing and out of control. We should be more careful.”
Tom thought, “Food Detective Academy! I must contact them in order to save the world!” He said to his parents, “I need to go to the washroom,” and picked up his phone and ran into the toilet.
He dialed the FDA hotline.
A voice came over the phone, “Hello, it is the Food Detective Academy…”
Chapter 5
Tom said quickly, “Hello, I'm Tom. I know something about the monsters and the poisoned food...” Tom explained everything that he had seen down the basement and the hole.
“Well, I’m Professor Lam. I do know something about the hole too! But I think I will talk to you privately.” Professor Lam said.
Suddenly, Tom felt everything around him begin to spin. After a while, he found that he wasn’t in the toilet anymore. He was in a laboratory. Standing in front of him was a woman wearing glasses. She said, “Welcome, Tom, I'm Professor Lam. Have a seat and we can talk.”
Tom sat on a chair. Professor Lam said, “So, you said you saw two monsters, did you?”
“Yes,” Tom replied.
“These days, people often harm the Earth by polluting the environment. The soil is always being polluted! So the soil formed some kind of horrible monsters like what you saw.” Professor Lam explained slowly.
“How about the humongous giants? What will they do?” Tom asked.
“The monsters will be in control of the giants. The FDA will be able to make a medicine to turn the giants back to humans.” Professor Lam answered.
“When will the medicine be made?” Tom asked.
“It will be fast if I make it by myself.” Professor Lam laughed as Tom felt everything around him spin again...
Chapter 6
“Tom! What are you doing? Did you fall into the toilet?” Tom heard his mother shouting. He was back in the toilet, sitting on the toilet seat.
Tom replied, “I'm coming out now!” He stood up and went out of the washroom.
Suddenly, he heard a voice in his head, “Tom, I am Professor Lam. The medicine will be ready in three days. I have contacted the police to evacuate your neighbors. Your parents will have to leave too! But you cannot leave. You shall help me to keep a close watch over the hole to see if the monsters are in it.”
Tom thought, “But how can we destroy the monsters?”
Professor Lam must have heard his question, “The only way to defeat the monsters is to stop people from polluting the environment. And you can start watching them tomorrow morning.”
The next morning, Tom found some big boxes for hiding and carried them to the basement. He used a knife to cut a hole so that he could look through the hole. And then he went to wake up his parents as they needed to leave.
Tom went to his parents’ room. When he wanted to wake his parents up, he found that they were already gone! A horrible thought appeared in his mind. Were they kidnapped by the monsters?
Chapter 7
Tom panicked. He fell on his parents’ bed and felt difficult to move. He phoned Professor Lam and cried, “Help, Professor Lam! My parents are missing! Please help to find them!”
“Don't worry, Tom. Maybe your parents are at some other place.” Professor Lam replied.
“No, they have been kidnapped by the monsters!”
“Kidnapped? Monsters? I don't think so. Even if they were kidnapped by the monsters, you can find them after this crisis. Anyway, you should keep a close watch over the hole starting now!”
“Ok!” Tom replied.
After two days, the monsters came back at the hole. Tom informed Professor Lam instantly.
“Good,” said Professor Lam happily, “We should take action as soon as possible. Now, I will send you the medicine.” A dozen bottles of green medicine appeared on a table near Tom.
“According to my test on the mutated humans, their favorite food is egg waffle. You now need to buy some egg waffles and mix the medicine in it. The hole should be blocked to prevent monsters from attacking us.” Professor Lam explained.
Tom bought many bags of egg waffles and got the hole blocked. He told Professor Lam and a small phone magically appeared in his hand.
Professor Lam said, “The phone is for you to find the giants. You should give the egg waffles to attract the giants and they will grab them immediately. You 'll see. Now action!”
Chapter 8
Tom began to trace the giants by using the phone. Soon he found one.
The giant was pouring oil into the water of Victoria Harbour. The giant screamed, “I hate clean water. I will pollute the water and the sea will be dirty forever!”
Tom arrived at the ferry pier with the egg waffles. He was nervous as he was the worst swimmer in the class. He would drown if he swam in the sea. Tom immediately contacted Professor Lam and discussed the problem.
Professor Lam said, “The phone is magical. When you call a name, the person will appear immediately.”
Tom took out the phone and shouted, “Frank!”
Frank was the fastest swimmer in Tom's school. He had broken many records before.
Frank, who was wearing a swimming suit, appeared magically. Tom explained the situation to him. Without hesitation, Frank grabbed a piece of egg waffle and dived into the sea. He, with his fast speed, swam towards the giant. When he had almost reached the giant, the giant smelt the egg waffle and moved towards Frank.
Frank was petrified. He didn't know the giant will come to him.
The giant roared, “Give me the piece of egg waffle now!” It used its strong hands to snatch the waffle. Frank pretended to be scared and gave the waffle to it. The giant gobbled it up immediately. Suddenly, it began to struggle in the water and gradually changed back to a normal human being.
Tom was delighted to see the giant being transformed. He immediately traced for other giants and found that another was on the top of ICC Building.
Chapter 9
The giant was standing on the top of ICC Building with its enormous mouth open and blowing out black and dusty smoke. “I hate clean air. I am going to pollute the air so that no one can breathe clean air anymore.”
Tom arrived at the site and was terrified, “It will be dangerous if I fight it on the top of the building. I will fall off the building easily.”
“Spencer!” Tom shouted at the phone. Spencer was Tom's friend. He could do funny things and knew lots of jokes.
Spencer appeared. Tom told him about his idea of defeating the giant. Spencer went up to the top of ICC and shouted, “Hi, giant !”
The giant was confused and stopped blowing out the smoke.
Spencer told him some jokes and made some funny faces. The giant was amused and distracted by Spencer. He didn't notice Tom was hiding behind a pillar. While the giant was laughing, Tom threw the egg waffle into the giant's mouth. It began to struggle and changed slowly back to a human. It was the farmer who was reported missing in the news.
Tom had no time for celebration. He quickly hurried to Central, where another giant was waiting for him to be defeated.
Chapter 10
“Ah...” Shouted the giant loudly,”I will pollute the city by noise, so that everyone will become deaf.” Everyone in the street was frightened. Some covered their ears and ran away. Some knelt and prayed. Some even fainted.
The giant kept sneering arrogantly. Tom and Spencer arrived at Central. Few minutes later, Frank arrived there too. They used tissue to block their ears so that they won’t be affected by the giant's screaming voice. Tom thought of a plan similar to how they had defeated the previous giant.
“Justin!” Justin was the boys’ friend, too. He had a high pitched voice and could scream loudly.
Justin appeared. He was shocked, “Why am I here?” His friends immediately explained.
Everything was ready. Spencer, Frank and Justin came forward to the giant. The giant stopped screaming and stared at the boys curiously.
Spencer said, “Let's have a screaming competition! The loudest one wins.”
Justin added, “It's such a good idea! Let's do it now!”
The giant agreed. Frank said, “Ready, three, two, one!” The giant and the boys screamed and screamed. Tom ran and threw the piece of egg waffle into the giant's mouth. It swallowed the waffle and struggled on the floor. After a while, its body became smaller and smaller. And finally it turned back into a human. It was another farmer from the farm.
Tom and his friends continued their adventure. At last, all the giants were defeated. Professor Lam said, “Well done, boys! There were only the monsters left. Let's go and deal with them!”
Chapter 11
Tom contacted Professor Lam, “What can we do now?”
Suddenly, everything around Tom and his friends began to spin. They were in the FDA's laboratory in a matter of seconds. Professor Lam was standing in front of them.
“Welcome, boys! Well done! You have defeated the Giants!” Professor Lam said, “Now, I need to talk to Tom for a while in private.”
Tom and Professor Lam went in a dim small room. There was only a small lamp stand on the table and two chairs.
“Sit,” Professor Lam said seriously.
Tom sat on a chair.
“Tom, there is something I did not tell you when I first saw you. I will tell you when you are all at your home.” Professor Lam said, “But I must warn you, knowing the truth may make you unhappy. Are you brave enough to know the truth?”
Tom hesitated for a while and said, “Yes, I am.”
“Well, then. Let's go to your house and figure out the truth about the monsters in the hole.” Professor Lam said as she opened the door.
Chapter 12
After ten minutes, Professor Lam, Tom and his friends arrived at Tom’s home. Professor Lam said, “Children, you can go into the house first. Wait for me down in the basement. But I warn you, don't touch anything!” Then, she drove back to FDA.
Tom asked his friends as they went down to the basement, “Why did Professor Lam go back to FDA?”
Frank said, “I don't know. Maybe she forgot to bring something.”
Spencer opened the basement door and found that the basement was full of boxes. It was extremely dusty. The hole was still blocked.
“Let's just wait here.” Justin said quietly. He sat on the floor.
Suddenly, “Crack...” Tom and his friends heard some noises and the wood, which was used to block the hole, cracked.
Two monsters jumped out and screamed, “Yes! Finally we come out!” They began to chase the children.
Although the children were fast runners, they were tired. But the monsters seemed to be tireless. At last, the children gave up and sat on the floor panting heavily.
“Bang! The door was kicked opened. Professor Lam jumped in. She waved her wand in her hand and muttered something. A light blasted out from her wand and hit the monsters.
The monsters froze. After a while, their red eyes changed gradually to a normal human being's eyes. They began to recognise the children. When they saw Tom, they exclaimed, “Tom, my son!”
Chapter 13
“What!” Tom screamed. It was so loud that the others needed to cover their ears. “This is impossible!, Please, Spencer, tell me it is a dream!” Tom said.
“Actually, they are not your real parents. They are your parents from the future. And l am also, not only a professor, I am a magician too! I can do magic and foresee the future. But that is not important now. Let's find out the truth first.” Professor Lam said.
“As I said before, people these days pollute the environment. Years later, the soil will form different kinds of horrible poisons, no, actually some kinds of diseases. After that, human beings will be infected and become monsters. Their minds will be uncontrollable. The only thing they will do is destroy the environment and finally the earth.”
“The hole,” paused Professor Lam, “is actually a time machine. It was made and sent by me from the future, before I turned into a monster. Tom's monster parents were sent back there too. What happened next, I am sure you all know.”
“The world in the future is in a chaos. The world now is changing for the worse. We must not pollute the environment anymore!”
“Do you want to go to the future and have a look?” Professor Lam asked the boys.
“Yes!” said all the children.
Chapter 14
Professor Lam began to wave her wand. Slowly, the hole transformed into a tunnel.
“Jump into the hole, children,” ordered Professor Lam.
One by one, Tom and his friends jumped into the tunnel. They landed softly on the floor. They found a big machine. It was grey with two wings, like a flying car.
“Let's go,” Professor Lam said.
Inside the time machine, there were six seats, including the driver’s seat. In front of that there were a huge number of buttons. Professor Lam pressed one of the buttons and the door closed.
“During our trip, I must warn you not to get off the machine. This machine is made with hard metal so the monsters can't break it. But if you get out of the machine, you will be attacked." Professor Lam said.
The time machine began to spin. After an hour, Tom found that the machine was floating in the sky. However, the first thing that dragged Tom's attention was that the sky was no longer blue. It was grey and full of smoke.
The machine flew lower. The children saw the sea which was full of rubbish with lots of dead fish. Oil spilled around the sea. Near the sea, the buildings had collapsed. Monsters, zombies and other ugly creatures were fighting with each other. Screams and yells filled the air. Green liquid split all over the ground. It was the monsters’ blood!
Then, the time machine began to spin again. The trip was over. It was a terrible trip!
Chapter 15
“So, if we ignore the situation now, that will be our future. Do you want that, children?” asked Professor Lam, getting out of the time machine.
“Of course not!” the children said.
“So, if we don't want that, we'll need to change the future. The only way is to start protecting the environment, such as recycle paper, plastic and cans,”"Professor Lam concluded.
“But can the future be changed? It seems impossible!” Tom said anxiously.
“Nothing is impossible. Changing the future is hard, but never impossible.” Professor Lam said.
“Let's start now!" said the children, running out of the door of the basement.
“You must change the future, Professor Lam!" exclaimed Tom's monster parents,” we can't be like this. We are humans!"
“Well, never give up. If we protect and improve the environment from now on, we'll make it. Believe us!" Professor Lam said firmly.
“I'm counting on you, Professor," said Tom's monster mum.
“You can count on us, "Professor Lam said as she waved her wand at the hole," off you go."
The monster parents jumped and disappeared into the hole. They were back to the future world.
“Goodbye,” said Professor Lam, “and wait for my good news."
Chapter 16
At the FDA laboratory, Professor Lam took the children into a secret room. She said to the children, "From now on, you kids will be trained here for 3 months. You will learn different knowledge and skills so that you can become earth’s environment protectors."
The children worked hard in the secret room. Although it was very hard, Tom, Frank, Spencer and Justin all succeeded and passed the training.
When they left the room, they surprisingly found out that the time outside had only been one hour. "What a fantastic secret room!", exclaimed Tom.
Professor Lam looked at the children satisfactorily, "Kids, well done! You made it. Now you four are our earth's protectors. From now on you are responsible for saving the earth and changing our future!"
Suddenly, Tom felt everything around him begin to spin. After a while, he found that he was back to his home's toilet. He walked to his room tiredly and jumped into his bed. Quickly he felt asleep and started dreaming.
Chapter 17
Tom was dreaming about his parents. He muttered, “Mum and dad, I miss you very much!”
Suddenly, he heard a high pitched voice, "Tom, get up! You are such a lazy boy. It's now 3 o'clock in the afternoon!"
Tom jumped out of the bed and looked at his parents in front of him. “Mum, dad, is that true? You are back! I was so worried!”
Dad said, “Of course, we are home. We went to join the Keep Hong Kong Clean Campaign.”
Mum spoke again, “Yes, we told you before. Why did you forget it so quickly? Go to the kitchen and wash all the dishes now!”
Without any hesitation, Tom rushed to the kitchen and nearly fell into the rubbish bin again. However he was still very happy. He told himself, “I love you, parents. I will not let you turn into monsters. I can change the future!”

“The monsters will be in control of the giants. The FDA will be able to make a medicine to turn the giants back to humans.” Professor Lam answered.
“When will the medicine be made?” Tom asked.
“It will be fast if I make it by myself.” Professor Lam laughed as Tom felt everything around him spin again...
Chapter 6
“Tom! What are you doing? Did you fall into the toilet?” Tom heard his mother shouting. He was back in the toilet, sitting on the toilet seat.
Tom replied, “I'm coming out now!” He stood up and went out of the washroom.
Suddenly, he heard a voice in his head, “Tom, I am Professor Lam. The medicine will be ready in three days. I have contacted the police to evacuate your neighbors. Your parents will have to leave too! But you cannot leave. You shall help me to keep a close watch over the hole to see if the monsters are in it.”
Tom thought, “But how can we destroy the monsters?”
Professor Lam must have heard his question, “The only way to defeat the monsters is to stop people from polluting the environment. And you can start watching them tomorrow morning.”
The next morning, Tom found some big boxes for hiding and carried them to the basement. He used a knife to cut a hole so that he could look through the hole. And then he went to wake up his parents as they needed to leave.
Tom went to his parents’ room. When he wanted to wake his parents up, he found that they were already gone! A horrible thought appeared in his mind. Were they kidnapped by the monsters?
Chapter 7
Tom panicked. He fell on his parents’ bed and felt difficult to move. He phoned Professor Lam and cried, “Help, Professor Lam! My parents are missing! Please help to find them!”
“Don't worry, Tom. Maybe your parents are at some other place.” Professor Lam replied.
“No, they have been kidnapped by the monsters!”
“Kidnapped? Monsters? I don't think so. Even if they were kidnapped by the monsters, you can find them after this crisis. Anyway, you should keep a close watch over the hole starting now!”
“Ok!” Tom replied.
After two days, the monsters came back at the hole. Tom informed Professor Lam instantly.
“Good,” said Professor Lam happily, “We should take action as soon as possible. Now, I will send you the medicine.” A dozen bottles of green medicine appeared on a table near Tom.
“According to my test on the mutated humans, their favorite food is egg waffle. You now need to buy some egg waffles and mix the medicine in it. The hole should be blocked to prevent monsters from attacking us.” Professor Lam explained.
Tom bought many bags of egg waffles and got the hole blocked. He told Professor Lam and a small phone magically appeared in his hand.
Professor Lam said, “The phone is for you to find the giants. You should give the egg waffles to attract the giants and they will grab them immediately. You 'll see. Now action!”
Chapter 8
Tom began to trace the giants by using the phone. Soon he found one.
The giant was pouring oil into the water of Victoria Harbour. The giant screamed, “I hate clean water. I will pollute the water and the sea will be dirty forever!”
Tom arrived at the ferry pier with the egg waffles. He was nervous as he was the worst swimmer in the class. He would drown if he swam in the sea. Tom immediately contacted Professor Lam and discussed the problem.
Professor Lam said, “The phone is magical. When you call a name, the person will appear immediately.”
Tom took out the phone and shouted, “Frank!”
Frank was the fastest swimmer in Tom's school. He had broken many records before.
Frank, who was wearing a swimming suit, appeared magically. Tom explained the situation to him. Without hesitation, Frank grabbed a piece of egg waffle and dived into the sea. He, with his fast speed, swam towards the giant. When he had almost reached the giant, the giant smelt the egg waffle and moved towards Frank.
Frank was petrified. He didn't know the giant will come to him.
The giant roared, “Give me the piece of egg waffle now!” It used its strong hands to snatch the waffle. Frank pretended to be scared and gave the waffle to it. The giant gobbled it up immediately. Suddenly, it began to struggle in the water and gradually changed back to a normal human being.
Tom was delighted to see the giant being transformed. He immediately traced for other giants and found that another was on the top of ICC Building.
Chapter 9
The giant was standing on the top of ICC Building with its enormous mouth open and blowing out black and dusty smoke. “I hate clean air. I am going to pollute the air so that no one can breathe clean air anymore.”
Tom arrived at the site and was terrified, “It will be dangerous if I fight it on the top of the building. I will fall off the building easily.”
“Spencer!” Tom shouted at the phone. Spencer was Tom's friend. He could do funny things and knew lots of jokes.
Spencer appeared. Tom told him about his idea of defeating the giant. Spencer went up to the top of ICC and shouted, “Hi, giant !”
The giant was confused and stopped blowing out the smoke.
Spencer told him some jokes and made some funny faces. The giant was amused and distracted by Spencer. He didn't notice Tom was hiding behind a pillar. While the giant was laughing, Tom threw the egg waffle into the giant's mouth. It began to struggle and changed slowly back to a human. It was the farmer who was reported missing in the news.
Tom had no time for celebration. He quickly hurried to Central, where another giant was waiting for him to be defeated.
Chapter 10
“Ah...” Shouted the giant loudly,”I will pollute the city by noise, so that everyone will become deaf.” Everyone in the street was frightened. Some covered their ears and ran away. Some knelt and prayed. Some even fainted.
The giant kept sneering arrogantly. Tom and Spencer arrived at Central. Few minutes later, Frank arrived there too. They used tissue to block their ears so that they won’t be affected by the giant's screaming voice. Tom thought of a plan similar to how they had defeated the previous giant.
“Justin!” Justin was the boys’ friend, too. He had a high pitched voice and could scream loudly.
Justin appeared. He was shocked, “Why am I here?” His friends immediately explained.
Everything was ready. Spencer, Frank and Justin came forward to the giant. The giant stopped screaming and stared at the boys curiously.
Spencer said, “Let's have a screaming competition! The loudest one wins.”
Justin added, “It's such a good idea! Let's do it now!”
The giant agreed. Frank said, “Ready, three, two, one!” The giant and the boys screamed and screamed. Tom ran and threw the piece of egg waffle into the giant's mouth. It swallowed the waffle and struggled on the floor. After a while, its body became smaller and smaller. And finally it turned back into a human. It was another farmer from the farm.
Tom and his friends continued their adventure. At last, all the giants were defeated. Professor Lam said, “Well done, boys! There were only the monsters left. Let's go and deal with them!”
Chapter 11
Tom contacted Professor Lam, “What can we do now?”
Suddenly, everything around Tom and his friends began to spin. They were in the FDA's laboratory in a matter of seconds. Professor Lam was standing in front of them.
“Welcome, boys! Well done! You have defeated the Giants!” Professor Lam said, “Now, I need to talk to Tom for a while in private.”
Tom and Professor Lam went in a dim small room. There was only a small lamp stand on the table and two chairs.
“Sit,” Professor Lam said seriously.
Tom sat on a chair.
“Tom, there is something I did not tell you when I first saw you. I will tell you when you are all at your home.” Professor Lam said, “But I must warn you, knowing the truth may make you unhappy. Are you brave enough to know the truth?”
Tom hesitated for a while and said, “Yes, I am.”
“Well, then. Let's go to your house and figure out the truth about the monsters in the hole.” Professor Lam said as she opened the door.
Chapter 12
After ten minutes, Professor Lam, Tom and his friends arrived at Tom’s home. Professor Lam said, “Children, you can go into the house first. Wait for me down in the basement. But I warn you, don't touch anything!” Then, she drove back to FDA.
Tom asked his friends as they went down to the basement, “Why did Professor Lam go back to FDA?”
Frank said, “I don't know. Maybe she forgot to bring something.”
Spencer opened the basement door and found that the basement was full of boxes. It was extremely dusty. The hole was still blocked.
“Let's just wait here.” Justin said quietly. He sat on the floor.
Suddenly, “Crack...” Tom and his friends heard some noises and the wood, which was used to block the hole, cracked.
Two monsters jumped out and screamed, “Yes! Finally we come out!” They began to chase the children.
Although the children were fast runners, they were tired. But the monsters seemed to be tireless. At last, the children gave up and sat on the floor panting heavily.
“Bang! The door was kicked opened. Professor Lam jumped in. She waved her wand in her hand and muttered something. A light blasted out from her wand and hit the monsters.
The monsters froze. After a while, their red eyes changed gradually to a normal human being's eyes. They began to recognise the children. When they saw Tom, they exclaimed, “Tom, my son!”
Chapter 13
“What!” Tom screamed. It was so loud that the others needed to cover their ears. “This is impossible!, Please, Spencer, tell me it is a dream!” Tom said.
“Actually, they are not your real parents. They are your parents from the future. And l am also, not only a professor, I am a magician too! I can do magic and foresee the future. But that is not important now. Let's find out the truth first.” Professor Lam said.
“As I said before, people these days pollute the environment. Years later, the soil will form different kinds of horrible poisons, no, actually some kinds of diseases. After that, human beings will be infected and become monsters. Their minds will be uncontrollable. The only thing they will do is destroy the environment and finally the earth.”
“The hole,” paused Professor Lam, “is actually a time machine. It was made and sent by me from the future, before I turned into a monster. Tom's monster parents were sent back there too. What happened next, I am sure you all know.”
“The world in the future is in a chaos. The world now is changing for the worse. We must not pollute the environment anymore!”
“Do you want to go to the future and have a look?” Professor Lam asked the boys.
“Yes!” said all the children.
Chapter 14
Professor Lam began to wave her wand. Slowly, the hole transformed into a tunnel.
“Jump into the hole, children,” ordered Professor Lam.
One by one, Tom and his friends jumped into the tunnel. They landed softly on the floor. They found a big machine. It was grey with two wings, like a flying car.
“Let's go,” Professor Lam said.
Inside the time machine, there were six seats, including the driver’s seat. In front of that there were a huge number of buttons. Professor Lam pressed one of the buttons and the door closed.
“During our trip, I must warn you not to get off the machine. This machine is made with hard metal so the monsters can't break it. But if you get out of the machine, you will be attacked." Professor Lam said.
The time machine began to spin. After an hour, Tom found that the machine was floating in the sky. However, the first thing that dragged Tom's attention was that the sky was no longer blue. It was grey and full of smoke.
The machine flew lower. The children saw the sea which was full of rubbish with lots of dead fish. Oil spilled around the sea. Near the sea, the buildings had collapsed. Monsters, zombies and other ugly creatures were fighting with each other. Screams and yells filled the air. Green liquid split all over the ground. It was the monsters’ blood!
Then, the time machine began to spin again. The trip was over. It was a terrible trip!
Chapter 15
“So, if we ignore the situation now, that will be our future. Do you want that, children?” asked Professor Lam, getting out of the time machine.
“Of course not!” the children said.
“So, if we don't want that, we'll need to change the future. The only way is to start protecting the environment, such as recycle paper, plastic and cans,”"Professor Lam concluded.
“But can the future be changed? It seems impossible!” Tom said anxiously.
“Nothing is impossible. Changing the future is hard, but never impossible.” Professor Lam said.
“Let's start now!" said the children, running out of the door of the basement.
“You must change the future, Professor Lam!" exclaimed Tom's monster parents,” we can't be like this. We are humans!"
“Well, never give up. If we protect and improve the environment from now on, we'll make it. Believe us!" Professor Lam said firmly.
“I'm counting on you, Professor," said Tom's monster mum.
“You can count on us, "Professor Lam said as she waved her wand at the hole," off you go."
The monster parents jumped and disappeared into the hole. They were back to the future world.
“Goodbye,” said Professor Lam, “and wait for my good news."
Chapter 16
At the FDA laboratory, Professor Lam took the children into a secret room. She said to the children, "From now on, you kids will be trained here for 3 months. You will learn different knowledge and skills so that you can become earth’s environment protectors."
The children worked hard in the secret room. Although it was very hard, Tom, Frank, Spencer and Justin all succeeded and passed the training.
When they left the room, they surprisingly found out that the time outside had only been one hour. "What a fantastic secret room!", exclaimed Tom.
Professor Lam looked at the children satisfactorily, "Kids, well done! You made it. Now you four are our earth's protectors. From now on you are responsible for saving the earth and changing our future!"
Suddenly, Tom felt everything around him begin to spin. After a while, he found that he was back to his home's toilet. He walked to his room tiredly and jumped into his bed. Quickly he felt asleep and started dreaming.
Chapter 17
Tom was dreaming about his parents. He muttered, “Mum and dad, I miss you very much!”
Suddenly, he heard a high pitched voice, "Tom, get up! You are such a lazy boy. It's now 3 o'clock in the afternoon!"
Tom jumped out of the bed and looked at his parents in front of him. “Mum, dad, is that true? You are back! I was so worried!”
Dad said, “Of course, we are home. We went to join the Keep Hong Kong Clean Campaign.”
Mum spoke again, “Yes, we told you before. Why did you forget it so quickly? Go to the kitchen and wash all the dishes now!”
Without any hesitation, Tom rushed to the kitchen and nearly fell into the rubbish bin again. However he was still very happy. He told himself, “I love you, parents. I will not let you turn into monsters. I can change the future!”
