P.6 English Debaters Win in Grand Finals Match

[21 Jun] Our P.6 English debating team went up against Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School in one of the Grand Finals of the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition (HKSSDC) held at YWPS today. The topic for this debate was “This house believes that parents of children who commit crimes should also be penalised” and YWPS argued the affirmative case.

In the end, YWPS won by one point and Jonathan Ford (6E) was awarded best speaker. His teammates in the finals were his classmates Hanson Fung and Kaiser Wong. Congratulations and thanks must also go to Alex Lam (6C), Reinhold Liu (6C) Nathan Shek (6C) and Julian Chan (6E) for also competing in this team this year. Their debating skills were instrumental in getting us into these finals.

Our other P.6 English debating team will compete next Tuesday in another Grand Final match against St Francis’ Canossian Primary School! We wish this team all the best!

Well done boys and Mr Ching! This topic to me is in favour of the negative side because I am still not convinced that parents are held responsible for their children's crime. It is extremely hard to argue for affirmative but you did a great job supporting yourselves with research work. In terms of delivery I think you're clearly showing more confidence and authority. The match was close in terms of scores and it's an interesting thing to know that the adjudicator paid such close attention to the points, and not very much the way they're delivered. It's a great lesson for me as well!

I am really grateful to evryone who helped our team along the way, (with 4 debates!) I am also really happy that Ying Wa could get the 'Champion' trophy and hope that we can get the other one next week!

Wow, this was quite a close debate. As the first speaker of the team, I am very thankful to all of those who have helped me in this debate. Although it was my last time debating in primary school, I would not forget this valuable experience and perhaps would try to join the secondary school debating team in the future! I hope our team 2 would make their best out of their competition on Tuesday!

I would like to thank Mr. Ching for giving me this chance of my first debate competition in HKSSDC. My speaker teammates Hanson and Jonathan helped me to master my debate skills, pronunciation and script, and other teammates provided an excellent research support. Our hard work did pay off and the champion in the grand final is very encouraging.

Well done boys.

By all accounts a tough final but you persevered and came through.

My suggestion to you all: take your Ying Wa Primary School debating experience and continue in your secondary school, your university and your adult careers. Learn from the best you can at the time and never stop practising your debating and public-speaking skills in their appropriate forums. Being able to debate and speak publicly, in a clear, targetted and engaging way is one of the most valuable skills you can learn and it will help you throughout your lives.
