"Project WaOW!" Sharing Series - Dr Lee's WOW experience

[8 Sept] "Project WaOW!" as our Diverse Learning Experiences theme this year has kicked off! We will invite different teachers and students to share with us their WOW experiences which should be full of surprises and unexpected outcomes.

As our first sharing, I have made a video about my very unusual experience in training a group for the Speech Festival some time ago. Watch the video below and afterwards, try responding to one or both of these questions:

2. Beside "be prepared", what other things can we learn from this experience?

I think the first WOW is the biggest wow, because if the main character went away , then the drama/speech competition should be almost the end.

1.I think the second wow is the biggest.It is because the side character have remember all the characters including the main character lines very perfectly.This is almost impossible for me without looking their script and remember for few days.Also,he did is side character job very perfectly with remembering all the script at other characters

Question1:
I think the second WOW is the biggest because the side character was able to recite all of the main character’s lines as well as his own.That is very impressive.
Question2:
I think we can learn to check with everyone before signing up in a competition. If they had checked if anyone’s other activities was the same time as the competition, they could have recruited somebody else as the main character in the first place, which would mean there wouldn’t be any trouble later on.

1. In my opinion, the second "WOW" is the biggest one because the side character of the team actually remembered all the main character lines in the drama story! What a surprise!

2. To me, a thing that I have learnt from this experience apart from "be prepared" is to take the initiative to do something that you think is necessary, like the side character from the second "WOW". Otherwise, things may lead to huge disasters.

1. I think meeting the Government Officials is the best Wow event! Because imagine seeing them on TV but you can see them in real life! You can also learn their Successful Steps of becoming a Impactful person in HK, and learn some Great Tips and get some Advice from them!
2. I think we can Learn that Learning from people Older than you is more Helpful, because they have been in the world for more Time than you and they can help you guide through more Obstacles in Life!

I have learnt that we shouldn’t give up easily.I thought the the first wow was the most interesting,because when I knew that the main character needed to leave,I was so surprised.They didn’t give up ,and invite a new member.They practiced a lot and won the champion.

I think the second WOW is the biggest,because the side character recited all of the character's lines including the main character,also remembered the side character's lines perfectly,it'd definitely be impossible for me and that's amazing for the new member to know all lines!That transition was definitely amazing and smooth that the judge didn't even notice any signs of a new member!!

Question 2-I think we should do things carefully. It was because the main character in the drama team suddenly need to go to an other competition. It is impossible to forget a competition, so we should do things carefully.

I suppose the main character needs a long time to practise, but the fact that he can transition so fast is definetely a big WOW for me.

I personally think that the biggest wow was that the group was invited to a party specifically by Mrs Lam. Being invited to a government party by the Headcheif of Hong Kong is a tremendous accomplishment and a colossal honour just to participate. I hope I can be invited into the Thematic Group Speaking team too!

The biggest WOW experience would be the missing of a lead character just two days before competition. As said in the video, Dr. Lee and his crew practised for a long time hoping to get a prize at the Speech Festival. However, because of clashes of schedules, the lead character could not make it. That's terrible. I admire Dr. Lee's ability to embrace challenges with a positive attitude.
Apart from getting ourselves prepared, I think we should learn to embrace challenges with a courageous spirit. We should try all ways possible to solve problems instead of giving up easily.

Q1: I think the biggest WOW is the second one, because speaking from experience, memorizing your own lines even as a side character is hard enough, so the unspoken team member memorizing another character's script is already worth it's own wow already, but the fact that the separately memorized script was none other than the main character's was just the cherry on top. I give the member massive amounts of kudos.

1. I think the biggest WOW is the third WOW. Getting 91 points and the Champion with a new member who has only practiced for 2 days is just unbelievable.
2. I think that "don't give up" can also be learnt from this experience. I believe that the team members did think of giving up after the "bad WOW", but luckily, the amazing side character memorized all the lines and the new member still performed well.

I think the fourth WOW is the biggest WOW. It is because you were invited to the GOVERNMENT HOUSE is a super big honor. You can also take a photo with the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region! I could't believed that when I was watching that part! It is amazing!

2. Beside "be prepared", what other things can we learn from this experience?

We can learn that we shouldn't leave a competition suddenly and break the schedule that the team have(especially when you are important, like Dr Lee's team's MAIN character) already had. If you don't want to join the competition in the first place, you shouldn't join and wasted the teacher's and the team's time.(like somebody has played a trick on you) We should think more about why you want to join this competition in the first place and list out two or three or more point in your brain, then it won't go wrong. Hope this suggestions helps you.

For me,it was the third Wow that surprised me the most.Although they had to change characters two weeks before the show but the transition was almost perfect and even earned the team the chamipionship although their starting line was slower than other groups.They were futher than the other teams in their performing work when other teams got weeks to prepare but they had only two days.

To be honest, in my opinion, the second and the fourth one shocked me a lot. I've played in the English Drama Team last year, and trying to remember the lines was a little tough to me. What's more, I was just a side character. How could I memorize BOTH my lines and the main character's line at the same time? But, as said in the video, the side character replaced the main character. Wow!
The fourth "Wow" was going to the government's house and having a tea party. This would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to go in the government's house, as normal people can't get in there. When I was watching the video, I felt proud of Dr. Lee and his team, too.

Q1: In my opinion, the biggest WOW was the second WOW. In a thematic group speaking competition, the script is already challenging enough that memorizing one’s own is already difficult. The fact that the side character was able to memorize the script of the lead character was astonishing, especially considering that the lead’s script is usually the largest. It’s possible that the side character unconsciously memorized all the other lines during the many rounds of practice, but this doesn’t make the side character’s achievement of memorizing and adapting to the script any less spectacular and WOW-worthy.

Q2: I believe that a lesson we can learn from this experience is that there are no impossible scenarios. Murphy’s law, an ancient epigram, states that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong, at the worst possible time.” In this scenario, something that could go wrong (the main character leaving) occurred, at the worst possible time (two days before the competition). That’s why we shouldn’t be shocked by unpleasant surprises or succumbing to defeat thanks to the paralysis by hopelessness. Instead of looking back and saying, “What if that hadn’t happened?”, we should figure out the best way to maximize benefits from that moment on. This can help minimize the stress we feel during unexpected disasters and assist us in regaining control over the situation.

1.In the 4 wows ,I think that Dr Lee’s team winning the champion is the biggest wow because even though their main character has left and it is already the second day before the competition, the team unexpectedly find a side character who knows all the main character’s lines. How surprising it is! Then, the team also finds a new side character. They practise day and night and skip many classes. At last, their efforts are paid off and they become the champion of the competition! I think this is wonderful and this wow is the biggest one.

2.Beside "be prepared", I also learn about “no pay no gain” and we should never give up. For example, the team practise a lot and skip some classes and they still continue their practice. This shows that they are determined and have made a lot of efforts . But that’s not enough, their main character has left and the team needs to pay more efforts before the competition starts, but they still don’t give up, practise day and night. Q1:I think the second WOW is the biggest. Firstly, in an extremely short period of training time, remembering one character’s lines was already very troublesome, it was nearly impossible to remember the main character’s script (which is considered to be the longest)and also the other character’s lines. Secondly, since it was a drama, actors got to read out their lines with unique emotions, which needs a lot of training to achieve having touching emotions. I am astonished that the helpful member of the team could pick up everything in two days time. He must spend a lot of time to train not only with Dr lee, but also reading his NEW lines himself at home. I am stunned by
his diligence and also perseverance, it was literally amazing, fabulous.
Q2: Other than “be prepared”, I think we could also learn to be determined, never give up. In this incident, although the most important main character quitted two days before the competition, Dr Lee’s team did not give up, they tried their best to figure out the solutions and successfully solved the problem and eventually won the champion. The great scientist Albert Einstein put it, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” If we cannot face a problem boldly and give up easily, we will end up as a quitter. Dr Lee’s WOW experience is a very good example to the learning principle: Never give up.

This wow caused a big rise in the government or Education Bureau’s impression to Ying Wa, as they were invited to Ms Lam — the chief executive back then’s home to have a tea party. Also , while Dr Lee did not expect a letter would come back, the chief executive actually replied with the email , reminding us all that anything can be possible , from receiving a letter from the chief executive to completing your most desired goal of life.

Q2 : I think that we can also learn from this wow experience to never give up hope. Although subtly expressed from this experience, the main character was not performing that day. If they hadn’t found a substitute, this drastic change might have changed the high score of the performance. The principal back then — Mrs Lam , though, never gave up hope. She wanted to try and replace the main character and it worked very smoothly and well. That is why even though I think this experience shows that even if it’s blocked by clouds, sometime the clouds will part and you’ll be left with the beautiful sunshine.

I think the second is the biggest wow, because remembering other lines flawlessly is a very hard and difficult thing to do.

Other than “be prepared”, I think “Don’t give up” fits quite well, since the team of boys lost their main character but still got first place.

There are two ‘WOW’s” that I like. The first one is the side character could remember the performance that the main character does. And the second is the team was been invited to the Government’s House. If I were one of the guys, I would take some selfies with the chief administrator.

I learnt that we should always well prepare ourselves.

Q1. I believe that the biggest wow is the second one as the side character boy stepped into the main character's shoes just within 2 days.

Q2. I’m sure the boy in the second wow put lots of effort in the crucial moment. He was not afraid of difficulties, had the courage to accept challenges and completed the task perfectly, his splendid attitude is really worth to learn.

Q.1: I think the biggest WOW is the fourth one which is the last. It is a rare chance of going to the government’s house and join a party for winning the competition, even a teammate quitted! It is because that is the biggest "thing" that you don’t expect but it happened!
