"The Sunday Smile" Again!

This is the third consecutive year that our Ying Wa boys have been participating on RTHK's radio programme titled "The Sunday Smile."

Andrzej So (3A), Ryan Lau (3B), Nicholas Tang (2C) and Cyrus So (3E) were all very excited and delighted to have been chosen to participate in this fun and educational programme, this being a second time for Andrzej.

Participating in this program is indeed a unique opportunity for primary school students since it not only helps to boost their confidence level and be more articulate but also provides the golden opportunity to perform on radio and listen to themselves on air.

On the morning of 18th January, 2017, as we arrived at the RTHK studios for the recording, we were greeted warmly by our host Mr. Thomas Latter. He made the boys feel at ease and relax before the recording since they were getting a little anxious and nervous.

But that lasted only a few minutes and before long they were just like pros, completing their recording in under 10 minutes!

They were also given a chance to listen to their recording after it was done, which would be broadcast on the first Sunday of March. Later, they had a photo session inside the recording studio and outside on the foyer with Mr. Latter,  who, on behalf of RTHK presented each boy with 2 book coupons worth HK$100 each. Needless to say, the kids were ecstatic! This was an added bonus for them.

I would like to request all of you to tune on to RTHK 3, on the 5th of March, 2017 at 9 am to listen to our Ying Wa boys present "Fun Facts about the Month of March." Who knows, perhaps even you would get to know a new thing or two. So do remember to mark your calendars in support of our boys!

English Debating Team off to a great start

Congratulations to our English Debating Team for winning the two friendly matches against Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section) on the 16th of January. This year, our team members include Isaac Chan, Oscar Chan (6A), Anson Ng (6C), Calix Deng (6D), Mike Wong, Joshua Lam and James Tam (6E), and they won a glorious victory yesterday with their wonderful performance.

The motion of the competitions was that “Pokemon Go is a great outdoor activity”. Both schools sent out two teams in which one was the affirmative and one was the negative. The competitions took place at Maryknoll and we were truly honoured to have a chance to visit this Declared Monument of Hong Kong as their school scarcely allows visitors. The team was in awe of this stunning architecture but unfortunately, no photo-taking was allowed.

The competitions were fierce and intense. Both teams spoke passionately about well researched work, combining factual statistics with emotional conviction. Their performance definitely left a remarkable impression on the adjudicators, as well as the audience. After a long and careful deliberation, the judges announced the results and Ying Wa’s team secured victory in both matches.

All the team members were thrilled about the results but it is important that they do not slide into complacency but better themselves. I hope they can keep up the good work during the upcoming official HKPTU Debating competition!

Building Hand in Hand – An Academic and Cultural Exchange

PictureMeeting with the principal and English teachers
Ms Angel Leung and I joined an exchange programme with Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue (泉州實驗小學) from 27th to 31st of December, 2016. Our school has a very close connection with Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue. Counting back to 2009, Ms Chen Xing came to our school for a one-year Chinese exchange programme. Lots of visits and exchange activities have been going on since then. However, the exchange activities were only limited to Chinese. This summer, our school signed a contract with Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue and we became sister schools. To further extend the exchange activity, this year, our English department launched an exchange programme with Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue.

English teachers of Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue were all very excited about the exchange programme as this was the very first time for them to have formal English exchange activities with Hong Kong teachers. Before the programme, Ms Cathy Xu (the English panel) and I had already discussed a lot about the details of the exchange programme. Ms Xu shared with me some background information about English teaching and learning in their school. She also showed me some of the English teaching materials used in their school. With the help of this information, Angel and I prepared materials that were suitable for their teachers and students.

During the exchange programme, we had a meeting with the principal and the teachers took us on a school tour, introducing different facilities and programmes organized in their school. We were also invited to join a welcoming ceremony and New Year celebration. We watched a variety of performances, including singing, dancing, orchestra, and so on.

Focusing on the academic exchange, we observed a P.5 English lesson conducted by Ms Xu and I had a lesson demonstration, teaching another P.5 class. We had post-lesson observation discussions with all the English teachers in their school. We demonstrated how teaching materials could be used flexibly in lesson planning and how additional resources could be added in various stages of teaching and learning. We also shared with them the importance of scaffolding learning tasks to facilitate students in using the targeted language structures to express their personal ideas. Teachers were very impressed and we discussed a lot more on how different topics could be taught.

Besides lesson observations and discussions, Angel and I also organized an English activity for around 100 students from P.3-6. As Chinese New Year is coming, we introduced how traditional Chinese New Year blessings could be expressed in English. We played a matching game with students and we guided them to write their own blessings. Students enjoyed the activities so much and they were so proud of their work. Some teachers of Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue were very eager to join and they wrote their own blessings too!

In addition to the academic exchange, we had a lot of cultural exchange. Teachers of Quanzhou Shi Yan Xiao Xue welcomed us with warmth and great hospitality. They organized visits to various traditional attractions such as Qingyuan Mountain, Laojun Rock, China Museum of Fujian-Taiwan Kinship, The West Lake Park, and so on. We also tried many local snacks, including Kaizai Jian (fried oyster), Mianxian Hu (noodles in soup), Rouzong (dumplings) and Nenbing cake.

This was a really fruitful exchange experience. I believe it would be beneficial for teachers to have more experience and exposure like this. I hope more English teachers can join!
