5th NESTA Primary Debating Competition

Two wins and one loss in this Round Robin stage of the 5th NESTA Primary Debating Competition - this may not be enough to have brought us to the next round, but our school's effort was stunning and highly satisfactory, in any case.

The NESTA Primary Debating Competition, which we reached the Finals last year, has a different game play this time (probably due to an increase in competitors). Four Round Robin groups were arranged where we were put in a strong group where DBSPS, St Margaret's Co Ed English Sec & Pri School and Immaculate Heart of Mary School were our fellow competitors.

Our school also took the challenge to host the Round Robin as well today (25 Feb) when six tight matches were held from 1 pm, with the motion "Learning English by Reading Storybooks is Better than Watching TV". The judges obviously did not have an easy time agreeing with one another for each match. Nevertheless, the result of today is as follows:

5th NESTA Primary Debating Competition - Round Robin (Group 3)
Picture
Only the winner of the group will advance to the next round. Yes, we are disappointed that we lost a close match, but the learning experience was fantastic for our competitors, audience, teachers and coaches. Our debating team must have gained a lot from the constructive comments and our competitors' performances today. I am also proud of our teaching staff, especially the English teaching team, which demonstrated seamless teamwork to facilitate almost perfect logistics in order to enable the four schools to do six matches overlapping school hours so smoothly.

One thing is sure - debating in YWPS has got a brilliant start and it will be an area to be further developed in the years to come. The fire in our boys' speeches this afternoon is still burning in my heart. We have won more than we expected today.

I sincerely thank our participating warriors (6E Ryan Keung, 6A Matthew Chan, 6B Issac Lee, 6B Tom Kwok, 6B Jason Chan, and 6E Isaac Yan) and our debating coach Mr Tam for the tremendous effort displayed.

What’s it like to have a robotic domestic helper at home? – Drama team tells all at the Hong Kong School Drama Festival (“HKSDF”)

For the 4th year in succession, YWPS entered the HKSDF. After 4 weeks of blood, sweat and tears (and numerous technical difficulties), eleven of our P.5 and P.6 students successfully performed the 20-minute play "Why Can't You Do It Yourself?" in front of two professional judges yesterday (23 Feb) in our school hall. The story, originally written by a group of ex-YWPS students, is about two brothers who discover the reality of having a robotic domestic helper at home. From all accounts, our actors gave a virtually flawless performance and received high praise from both judges. Congratulations must go to the boys (and their parents) for their efforts and flexibility! We look forward to performing this drama in front of you all at this year’s Drama Fiesta!

Drama Coach

Performers' reflection

Johnny Chou 6A:

"This time, Mr Ching coaches the drama team and I would participate in a drama performance. My role is to be an independent lad who can get things done by himself. We met a lot of obstacles, like someone was sick during the drama practice. Also, we were not cooperating sometimes. The worst one was that the curtains got stuck at the last week of the performance in the hall! All of us had been working hard. When the performance day arrived, we did our best and the play ran smoothly. Thanks to Mr Ching for giving me an occasion to enjoy English drama!"

Speech Gala - Who Says Boys Don't Shine in Speech?

I went speechless listening to the performances in Speech Gala's Grand Finals held today (15 Feb). I thank the boys, the teachers, the parents, our School Head, the adjudicator Ms Mary Ann Tear, our guests (particularly Ms Claire Leung) and the whole school to make this annual event possible.

I am unable to tell which performance touched me the most because they all touched me in different ways. But what impressed me was what our guests Mr and Mrs Ford (retired School Principals in England) said after the show: "We don't have anything like this back in England!"

Yes, we treasure English and value English as a practical form of arts, and that has long become the tradition and trend of the English curriculum of YWPS - and that makes all the difference in learning this language.

Brilliant Stories - Wartime Cookery Writing Project

2/6/2016

Our school theme this year, "Food Detective Academy (FDA)", inspires teachers and students alike in creating marvelous writings ideas. Our P.6 boys have recently composed a piece of fiction based on a wartime cooking manual first printed in England in 1940! Authors of the five best pieces receive a reprint of the cook book purchasable from England today. See the five best pieces below and be ready to travel back to the time of WWII to experience food rationing in England!

Back to London of 1943, Christmas Day            Cyrus Chow 6A

Picture
I’m Cyrus of Food Detective Academy. I was assigned a mission to travel back to the war-time of England to see the hardship of people’s living.

I entered the time travelling machine and set the targeted time and place. Then I activated it and landed in the middle of a market. I believed I had arrived in London of 1943. I walked around the market and found people selling something strange, for example, tripe, cow-heel, ox-tail and sheep’s heads.

I asked a butcher, “Why do you sell such strange meat?” The butcher replied, “It is war-time! The food and fuel are so limited. The government suggests that we save fuel and food. We are so frustrated but we can do nothing about it. All British are suffering at this time.’ I consoled him that the war would end in 1945 but he didn’t believe me.

I wanted to know more about the hardship of British people, so I took a “Magic Pill” to make me invisible. I went to a village and entered a house. I saw a woman who was cooking dinner. She said to her son, “Today is Christmas Day, I’m going to cook beef and sausage roll and meat and macaroni pie.” Her son said, “Mum, I want to eat Turkey!” The woman said, ‘We are so lucky to have sausage and meat because it’s war-time. We should follow the government’s guidance to save food and fuel.” Her son was unhappy, so the woman said gently, “The war-time will be over soon. We will have turkey on Christmas Day next year!”

Before I left the house, I left some candy canes on the dining table. Then, I went back to Hong Kong of 2015 in the time travelling machine. After this trip, I realized that we are so lucky in Hong Kong nowadays, we should treasure food and fuel. My new year’s wish is “World Peace Forever!”
