English debaters convince judges that Hong Kong is NOT a good place for children to live in

4/27/2015

Congratulations to our English debaters for winning their semi-final match at the NESTA Primary School Debating Competition on 27 April (Monday). They defeated a strong Pun U Assocation Wah Yan Primary School team in front of a packed audience that included ALL YWPS English teachers (talk about pressure)!

This year marks the first time that our school has entered into a Hong Kong-wide debating competition and it is also the first time our school has hosted the semi-finals.

In the debate, the team - Ronney Chang (6D), Alfie Zhu (6E) and Keith Kwok (6D) - had the task of debating against the motion “that Hong Kong is a good place for children to live”. Both adjudicators were impressed with the delivery of all debaters' speeches and awarded the match to YWPS by a slim margin. Alfie was also named the Best Debater of the match.

Our team will face Hong Kong Taoist Association Wun Tsun Primary School in the finals of the Competition. It will be held at the City University of Hong Kong on Wednesday 20 May 2015.

Please help us to wish our English debating team every success in the upcoming finals!

"Good People Good Deeds" Writing Competition

4/26/2015

Saturday, 25th April was a big day to Jason Siu (6A). He won the Silver Award in a keen writing competition, “Good People Good Deeds” English Story Writing Competition 2014, held by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

The award presentation was not only joyful moments to all winners but also an inspiring sharing session to all participants. The Guest-of-Honour, Prof. John Lee Chi-kin, JP, the Vice President (Academic), The Hong Kong Institute of Education, shared with us from a scientific perspective how stories activate other parts of our brain besides the language parts. Also, there was an important message in that morning: we can all be good people to show love and care to people around us.

Congratulations again to Jason and let’s love each other more!

This is our first year offering the “YW Education Foundation Scholarship for Cambridge Programmes”. The award is for those P.6 students of YWPS who have applied for the Cambridge Programmes which is an overseas summer programme we have joined in the past four years. After carefully examining each applicant in terms of his academic background, leadership, attitude, interview performance etc, the selection panel, headed by Headmistress Mrs Lam herself, has reached the following decision:

Winners of GOLD Scholarship (HK$ 25,000)

Elvin Lam 6B
Brian Cheung 6B
Ronney Chang 6D

Winners of SILVER Scholarship (HK$ 10,000)

Samuel Wong 6A
Samuel Yau 6D
Ivan Lam 6E

The results have all been sent to the applicants of the award individually. The prize will be officially presented in December this year at Ying Wa College’s Speech Day when these boys have become Secondary One students at the College. Meanwhile, let’s hear from the GOLD Scholars on what they have to say about this honour!

From Elvin Lam 6B:

“…what a great honour it is! I must thank Ying Wa for this prestigious scholarship which is a recognition of my past effort and my passion to excel myself. This is the first scholarship I have ever been awarded, and it is a milestone I will cherish forever…This scholarship will further motivate and inspire me to continue to learn and to perform even better in future endeavors!  I will share my experience I get from this programme with my brothers in Ying Wa.  I will also leverage the knowledge and skills I learn from this programme in my future encounters. For that once again, I must thank everyone, including Mrs Lam, my teachers and parents, who helped me to get this scholarship and to join the Cambridge Programmes!”

From Brian Cheung 6B:

“Thank you for granting me the ‘Gold Scholarship’. I am very happy because I have never thought that I could get it. When I came back home from the Sports Training Camp held in Shanghai, I opened the mailbox and I found a letter from Ying Wa. I opened it and screamed out loud because I was too excited to have the scholarship! All in all, thanks to all the teachers and Mrs Lam for giving me this award.”

From Ronney Chang 6D:

“I held the envelope tight, my hands trembling. Sweat rolled down my cheeks. I had just received a letter from Ying Wa. Opening the envelope, I peeked inside and took out the sheet… ‘YES!’ I cried out loud. I have got the Gold Scholarship for the Cambridge Programmes this year!...I would like to thank Mrs Lam for giving me this chance to participate in this event and sincerely thank my parents who are the ones who taught me how to write my proposal and helped me during my research. I hope I can learn more during my trip to Cambridge so I can contribute back to Ying Wa or even the society someday. Thank you all again!”

Congratulations to these boys and we wish all the participants of Cambridge Programmes a fantastically life-changing learning experience this summer.
