Concentration, Commitment, Passion - Drama Fiesta 2017

A popular scene from the Drama Fiesta 2017
PictureGuest Mr Ngan enjoying the performances
Yesterday morning (28 June) I was blessed to have been invited by Principal Lam to watch Ying Wa Primary School's Drama Fiesta 2017 performance.

I was extremely impressed by the level of concentration, commitment and passion displayed by all performers on stage (including the MC's). A lot of heart and hard work went into the preparation of these performances, so credit goes to all students and teachers who worked on this creative process.

Whether a performance is effective or not is not just decided by what happens on stage, but how it is received by the audience. From the laughter, applause and highly engaging interactive drama performance, it is obvious that performers were able to captivate and inspire their fellow classmates.

Congratulations once again to all those involved in the running success of the Drama Fiesta 2017 and I look forward to seeing future productions put on by Ying Wa boys.

"Largest Gathering of People Wearing Swim Caps" - record breaking in progress...
PictureTom and his father with Headmistress Mrs Lam
On the 24th of June, thousands of Ying Wa students, old-boys and parents joined together to break the Guinness world record, "largest gathering of people wearing swim caps". I was one of the participants on this very hot day. About 2500 sweaty boys and girls stood still on the basketball courts and put on their swim caps, seeing the jaw dropping sight and smelling the smell of men was definitely a phenomenal experience!

Thinking back now, the love of students to their mother-school was clearly seen as I heard old-boys chat about their time studying in Ying Wa, they still remember the nicknames they called each other back then! This event was a perfect celebration for the completion our swimming pool, as it made the Ying Wa family come together and complete a challenge. I could feel the bonding between the participants when the drone flew down and cooled us down, we all cried 'ahhhh' as we felt the breeze on our faces. This event is definitely a huge milestone in the history of Ying Wa!

That same old metal gate...
(For Guinness World Record day at Ying Wa, 24 June 2017)

I saw familiar faces, welcoming me as if family, friendly and radiant...
I was back home at last.
I was back with my old friends, back with my brothers, that sense of belonging seized all the nerve and anxiety I had at first.
Just standing there, memories of the past swarmed into my brain. The day when I first stepped foot into the lobby, it all seemed not long ago, as if it was just yesterday.
Today we were back together, our friendship bonds still glistening despite us being in different schools. Our truest smile reflected the everlasting friendship in our hearts. Although we have changed a lot throughout time, we remain united and harmonious in our souls.
Under the blazing heat, our faces glimmered with beads of trickling sweat, cheeks reddened and scorched from the punushing sun. However, our spirits stayed strong, to complete the Guiness World Record. In the glorious singing voices, I indeed found myself back home.
That same old metal gate, the beginning of my magical journey.

"3...2...1...hooray!" The roar from the crowd was deafening when countdown ended, as everyone knew that Ying Wa had created a new Guinness World Record of the "largest gathering of people wearing swim caps" on 24 June 2017.

In the morning of that day, the school campus was swarmed by excited parents and students, and helpers who were trying their best to sort the people into groups. Each person was given a white swim cap which all of us had to put it on at the same time. At around ten o'clock, the different groups started to line up in the basketball court. Our group was among one of the first ones to arrive at the basketball court, so we had to stand under the scorching sun for a whole 40 minutes! The heat was unbearable and all of us became sweaty, but we were still in very high spirits and continued waiting.

Just before the event started, "Uncle Potato" Mr. John Tsang appeared at the balcony and waved hands to the crowd. Then, Mrs. Lam announced the start of the event and everyone wore their swim caps. It was quite an impressive sight, that the mass of black hair disappeared into the sea of white caps.

Meanwhile, Mrs Lam and Mr Cheng interviewed Mr. Tsang and the ten minutes passed quickly. There was a countdown and an official announcement that Ying Wa had broken the world record! Three cheers for Ying Wa!

Although the weather was really hot, it did not rain and there were occasional breezes. The participants were also very cooperative and everyone had a great time. I hope that there will be similar events in the near future!

Journal of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama (UK) "Word Matters" reports on our three-year effort training for Thematic Group Speaking. Their latest issue (Summer 2017) features an article contributed by Dr H C Lee on his experience training (with the help of colleagues) a group of 9-10 boys for the 15-min act for three consecutive years entering the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival for the category "Thematic Group Speaking". The article defines the act and explains the training process. A reflection in the end was made to encourage more teachers to join this fun and meaningful dramatic act.

The clips to the three acts mentioned can be accessed below. Enjoy!
