Canada Educational Trip, Day 2

The Suspension Bridge
YWPS team conquering the snow
A crime scene...
Ouch! Who's attacking me?
Who is buying what?
Day 2 lived up to our expectation, if not also well exceeding it. We surely had a good taste of life in Canada.

The day started very "green" as we had a brief hiking experience in the pollution-free park called Lynn Canyon where the old Suspension Bridge is located. Not only did we appreciate the fun time walking like a toddler on that wobbly bridge, we were also melted by the great scenic view of the forest filled artistically with foliage and aged trees.

We then enjoyed an excessively large lunch of pizzas and chicken (and my passport was checked when I ordered a drink, ha!) before going to the famous resort, Whistler village. There were shops, restaurants and hotels in the village for tourists. The main attraction was certainly the snow-capped Blackcomb Mountain. The fun thing was, the tour didn't expect us to climb the mountain, but we improvised our way through it and purchased tickets to get to the snowy top by cable car! All teachers became kids again and played with the snow! We had to appreciate this rare opportunity as you don't usually have the chance to throw things at your boss, let alone throwing snowballs! We played for a while and left the slippery snow with half-soaked feet, forgetting the fact that we just easily overpowered the 3 degrees at the mountain!

The last visit of the day was a big shopping mall named "Aberdeen". To our surprise, the interior of the mall resembled so much of those in Hong Kong! Chinese seemed to be a very common language there, reflecting that Hong Kong people have already built up a healthy community in this country for generations. Ms Chan, Ms Ho and I visited some shops and then took their "Skytrain" (their railway system) back to the hotel.

I didn't buy much today, but the experience was priceless!

Canada Educational Trip, Day 1

Food, glorious food!
A huge shop!
Whose room is it?
Old friends and new faces - the 12-hour exciting (and turbulence-disturbed) flight to Vancouver opened up the first episode of our study tour, titled DSS School Scheme Canada Educational Trip 2016 (29 Apr - 8 May), involving 10 schools' representatives such as School Heads, Vice School Heads as well as curriculum leaders.

The YWPS group, Mrs Lam, Ms Chan, Ms Ho and I, arrived at the beautiful city under the gorgeous weather at around 4 pm, Canadian time, on 29 April. We headed straight to our hotel for check-in and had our first meal together at a nearby restaurant. Judging from the food we couldn't tell if we had gone overseas as the Shanghainese dishes were so well done! No one seemed to be affected by the jetlag yet as we finished our dinner smoothly.

The huge wholesale store opposite, "Costco", attracted our attention and we had a brief visit there. I have a feeling that I will be buying stuff there for students when it is time for souvenir hunt later.

We will surely have a better taste of the city tomorrow as the tour unfolds itself. Time for a rest. Stay tuned and enjoy life, wherever you are!

Outstanding Performer Awardees (from left): Mike Wong (5E), Anson Ng (5C), Tom Kwok (6B), Joseph Ho (6E), and Daniel Cheng (5C)
Once again, YWPS entered into the Hong Kong School Drama Festival. On 23 February 2016, our team of 11 P5 and P6 students dazzled the adjudicators with their story, “Why Can’t I Do It Myself?” From our performance, the adjudicators awarded our school with three awards in an announcement made yesterday (20 April).

A school record of five boys received an Award for Outstanding Performer. They are: Tom Kwok (6B), Joseph Ho (6E), Daniel Cheng (5C), Anson Ng (5C) and Mike Wong (5E). This is a great achievement as it acknowledges the growing number of young acting talent we have at our school.

We are delighted to receive the Award for Outstanding Script because it was written entirely by members of the YWPS family, both past and present. (Special thanks must go to Mrs Ho and her group of script writers from our P6 2013-2014 cohort who wrote the original story.) I am also honoured to receive the Award for Outstanding Director for our school in this year’s Festival!

Please join us to congratulate the YWPS Drama Team for such a wonderful achievement! The boys will be performing an improved version of the play for everyone on “Drama Fiesta” day on 27 June! Be sure to be at school that day to enjoy their performance
!

Beijing Tour for P.6 - A Reflective Journey

The graduation study tour for our Primary Six boys this year brought 200 YWPS people (boys, parents and teachers) to Beijing (1-5 Apr 2016). While our boys will have their share of reflection very soon through writings and presentations, I still would love to share a little here.

In spite of my incompetence of Putonghua, I  had the honour to take a group in 6D and was with this class most of the time throughout this tour. There was a great deal to learn in terms of, for instance, history, way of living in the city, transport system, food culture, and most important of all, we know more about ourselves.

Among the numerous interesting moments in the tour,  I found that:
Picture
boys enjoy floating in the air and taking pictures of that;
Picture
you could all become "great men" regardless of your age;
Picture
it is sometimes hard to predict what boys will do in front of the camera;
Picture
"google translation" could be a bad idea;
Picture
boys always have the ability to turn places into "wonderland";
Picture
but they do work seriously when they have to;
All in all, I have no doubt that we had chosen the right place to visit for these graduates-to-be and while they had a lot of fun, they had learnt more than they knew.
Picture
Our children are so fortunate to be able to experience the world so easily and frequently. Learning out of the classroom is important and it goes well with YWPS's spirit in that we should always think out of the box and see the world in different perspectives. These kids are capable of excelling out of their comfort zone and bringing back so much new knowledge to benefit their own community and country.

This is only a small part of what I saw. Boys, do prolong this experience and keep it fresh in your learning journey - this is certainly an experience for life!
