A Sweet Ending for the Group Entries This Year at the Speech Festival - Improvised Dramatic Group Snatched THIRD Place
The English group entries of YWPS at the 67th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival ends sweetly and completely this afternoon as our newly formed 5-boy improvised drama team attempted to visit the den of tigers and lions at the festival - the category of Improvised Dramatic Scenes, which is often dominated by schools traditionally sending several teams there every year.

Doing it the first time, with very little hope yet aiming at gaining experience from the contest, our boys used the 10 minutes of preparation time to prepare a fun-filled scene of a restaurant with a new clumsy waiter. Their sense of humour, creativity and voice clarity touched the adjudicator. A well-deserved Third Place (scored 84) was granted to us among 14 brilliant teams.

Their coach Mrs Rebecca Ho reflects the experience as follows:

“What do you know about improvisation ?
It is all about fun !
It is fun to receive your topic from the adjudicator's hand. It is fun to race with time to figure out the plot of your drama. It is fun to act with lines that just come up in mind . They are the charisma of improvisation.
Come to have a taste yourself, you will love it!
”

To conclude on our group performance this year at the Speech Festival, we are proud to tell you that ALL FIVE teams we sent out were awarded!
Junior Choral Speaking:
Senior Choral Speaking:
Thematic Group Speaking (I'm a Hero):
Thematic Group Speaking (Emotions):

Improvised Dramatic Scenes:
FIRST (90)
SECOND (90)
FIRST (88)
THIRD (85)
THIRD (84)
This simply shows how much our boys and our teachers love English! Hurray!

Thematic Group Speaking Teams Sparkled at Speech Festival

Happy moment: Team "I'm a Hero" received their Winner's Flag from the very impressed adjudicator.
Simply proud of our boys! We repeated our sparkling results last year in the Thematic Group Speaking category at the 67th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival as our two talented teams of boys won the First (scored 88) and Third Places (scored 85) at the Festival today (11 Dec). This category is particularly challenging to perform well as participants are expected to perform a 15-min speech and drama act with a balanced choice of text types following the theme of the coach's choice.

Team "I'm a Hero" was heavily praised in terms of their ability to manage a complex act, their strong concentration in acting, and the professional stance of particularly the extra performers at the background. Team "Emotions" was also appreciated for their bold central concept of exploring the relationship between students and teacher in the most entertaining manner.

This is our second consecutive year joining Thematic Group Speaking in the Speech Festival and for both years we received the top and third spots. We sincerely thank our drama team members in participating in all of our rehearsals amidst their very tight schedules. This is not only a game for our boys, it is also an interestingly difficult literary task for the coaches as they have to put together a sensible thematic programme for each group and train them to perform at such a high level.

Once again, I am very glad to have witnessed all these magical moments and be able to see the growth of our children in terms of language arts.

Though the Speech Festival is coming to an end, I feel that our tradition of having thematic groups in speaking is just a beginning, and we cannot ask for a better one.

More wonderful news from the 67th Hong Kong Schools Speech festival for our Department today (9 Dec). This time, our Junior Choral Speaking Group's (P.1-3) vivid and energetic interpretation of Allan Ahlberg's "Friendly Matches" impressed the adjudicator. The team convincingly crowned Winner with the score of 90 (Honours). The team has won the title three years in a row! Let's hear from our whole-hearted speech trainers:

"The 3- month training has finally come to an end. Though the training is very intensive, no one has ever complained about not being able to enjoy their free time every day. Students are completely devoted. To strive for excellence, they were very concentrated and paid full attention to articulate each word accurately and clearly. Their persistence and hard work enables them to perform well on stage. From their eyes, you can definitely see their enjoyment in acting as football players. Their lively and energetic performance has immensely impressed the adjudicator and the audience. Congratulations to our football stars! We are proud of you!"
