YWPS Boys Visit a Master Pastry Chef

On 26 June, 5 boys from our school led by YWPS Creative Editor Miss Muriel Ma and our English teacher Mr Richard Woods visited a famous Swiss pastry chef who runs his business in Hong Kong. Here's a post-event reflection from Alfie Zhu (6E), one of our boys who had joined this:

I munched the bread Chef Gregoire baked for us. Its taste was rich, the texture soft, and the enchanted aroma flew into my heart. It was purely delicious!

When I stepped into Bread Elements, the classic baking aroma already woke my stomach up. Here, Chef Gregoire Michaud taught us how we could make traditional and delicious bread. Instead of relying purely on machines, he did most of the shaping of the dough by hand. Also, he chose his ingredients by getting the best wheat to make his flour. All the effort meant the bread was at the highest quality.

I asked him, "Do you think that bakery is your job, your hobby, your destiny or just a piece of art?” He replied me without a single second of hesitation, "It is all of the above you have just mentioned.” One who does not love bakery would not have said that.

It is not easy to win this prize. And very importantly, their final interview performance did convince the judging panel that they are truly active readers of English who deserve this recognition.
For this, the English subject heads and Headmistress have recommended these 10 boys as the winners of the Reading Championship 2015.

The award is scheduled to be presented at the term-end ceremony on 8 July.

This is the second consecutive year the English Department presents the Reading Championship. Information about this school-based contest can be found here.

Keep Calm and Enjoy Drama Fiesta 2015

Drama Fiesta is a jubilant celebration and a merry moment for our boys to showcase their creativity, inborn vibe and enthusiasm to perform on stage. Our third Drama Fiesta was successfully held on 18 June 2015. With a few more newly added programmes, the Fiesta was even more vibrant and pulsating.

To start the show, our two animated Masters of Ceremony, Risto Leung (6C) and Jason Li (6C) brought the whole show to life. Under the limelight, the P.4-6 actors led by their directors, Mr. Richard WOODS and Mr. Thomas CHING, shone in the play “Be Careful of What You Wish For”. The charismatic Teacher, starred by Anson Ng (4D), demonstrated his talents in drama on stage. Our young actors’ subtle actions and vivid facial expressions swiftly captured all the audience’s attention as well as their heart!

Beside the live drama performance, the School Drama Team and the director, Miss Claire LEUNG, produced a movie “MI7: English’s Mission” to echo with this year’s school theme “C.I.A.” (aka “Creative Intelligence Action”). The movie was based on the original production “Johnny English” (starring Rowan Atkinson). Our Drama Team actors’ hilarious and comical acts, such as carrying the old man (Matthias Chan 6D) on Johnny English’s (Cedric Leung 6E) back and Johnny English’s silly kung-fu plus karate kicks, made the whole hall of audience burst into laughter.

Continuing on the dramatic mood, the School Drama Team carried on their performance on stage by adding a new element to the Fiesta: Thematic Group Speaking. The act “Don’t Make Excuses” was a thematic act put together by Dr. Peter LEE. It combines four literary pieces including two poems, one prose, one dramatic excerpt and additional materials written by Dr. LEE. The poem “Why are you late for school” was written by Steven Turner, the prose from “Through the Looking Glass” was written by Lewis Carroll, the play “Romeo and Juliet” was written by William Shakespeare, and the poem “Excuses, excuses” was written by Gareth Owen.

Merging all the junior boys’ talents, Mrs. Abanty PAUL, Ms. Jenny HO and Miss Angel LEUNG produced a new movie “Stone Slop” based on and adapted from the story “Stone Soup”. The young boys’ cheerful and lovely faces melted all the audience’s heart.

Who rocked the Drama Fiesta? Everybody! Thanks to Mrs. Rebecca HO and Miss Agnes HIO, and the whole school, including our Headmistress Mrs. Maria LAM, and our guests Ms. Lancy TAM (Principal of Law Ting Pong Secondary School), Ms. Norris LAI (English Panel, Ying Wa College) and Ms. Alice LEE (English teacher, Ying Wa College). They all moved along and danced with body percussion with the song “We Will Rock You”! Indeed, everybody rocked!

A “SPELLBOUND” YING WA

6/10/2015

Picture
On June 5, 8 and 9 of this year, 150 Ying Wa Primary School Junior (P.1-P.3) boys have metamorphosized into a hive of “Spelling Bees” in the unprecedented Inter-class Spelling Bee Competition.

There were two rounds to the competition – the Semi-finals and the Championship Finals. Ten “bees” were chosen by a lucky draw from each class as representatives. In the first round, each bee had to spell a word correctly under 6 seconds. There are 20 words in total. A great team of English Captains would help to record and mark the bees’ answers. The three classes in the year form that achieved the highest scores would be enrolled into the Championship Finals, which were held immediately after the Semi-finals.

In the Championship Finals, three students were chosen by lucky drawn from the three remaining competing classes. This time, the student had to spell the word out in front of a much larger audience and the time limit was only 15 seconds. The words would certainly be more challenging, but our boys were more than ready to fight for the bee “crown” for their class!

After three nerve-racking but rewarding lunch recesses of only 25 minutes, the following hives of “bee kings” were crowned:
Date                             Champion

9th June, 2015            1C

8th June, 2015           2A, 2E

5th June, 2015           3C

Congratulations to the Champion Classes, who showed calmness at the face of pressure and uncertainty. A big shout out to the 150 “bees”, English Captains and students who came to watch and cheer for their classmates! A big thank-you to all the English teachers for supporting the bees! Next year, everyone in each class will have a chance to fight for their class, so don’t lose hope if you were not picked this time. For now, why don’t we just let the school continue to be spellbound?

6/5/2015

Picture
The 19th issue of FLAME Magazine, one of the greatest inventions of the English Team of YWPS, is proudly launched today to find its enthusiastic readers. This issue features the DSS Ireland Tour, the Ying Wa Fantasia (annual concert), awarded pieces from our yearly Creative Writing Competition, and so much more! The online version is also available now in the FLAME Magazine section. Snapshots of the excitements of some classes receiving the magazine today are displayed at our gallery.

This magazine represents a lot of hard work from our English teachers and students for the past months at least. We hope this humble publication does impress and inspire you. Especially for those having a hard copy, I wish that you will treasure the copy and keep it for many many years!  Happy reading!
