Do you dare to dream? YWPS’ drama team reveals all!

After only seven weeks of rehearsal, our school drama team presented a 20-minute drama production called “Who Dares to Dream” to members of the Hong Kong School Drama Festival and some of our P2 boys at our school hall yesterday (27 Feb)!

Our 10 enthusiastic performers gave it their all in their story about a boy who realized that his dreams would come true. He quickly believes that all his dreams would come true. As a result, he dreams that he becomes a genius … even without having to work hard for it! (Don’t we all wish we could be geniuses without working hard for it?) In the end, does this dream work out well for John? All will be revealed at our DRAMA FIESTA on 27 June 2017!

Throughout the play, much laughter came from our audience. At times, even our visitors from the HKSDF laughed louder than our students! The adjudicators were impressed with how our team members played their roles and were happy with the storyline and how it unfolded.

Special thanks must go to our very own Ms Kwok and TA Dennis Ying for their tireless work in helping the Drama Team to prepare for this Festival! I wish to extend my gratitude to the YWPS administrative staff (our office and janitorial staff alike) for their assistance to ensure that our practice sessions and performance were smooth!

YWPS Debate Team's Smashing Victory

Congratulations to our English Debating Team for getting through to the semi-final of the HKPTU Primary Debating Competition (former NESTA Competition) by consecutively winning over three prestigious local schools, including Pui Ching Primary School, St. Francis of Assisi’s English Primary School and Kwun Tong Government School (Sau Ming Road) on 21st February, 2017.

The motion of the three matches is that “Pokemon Go is a great outdoor activity”. Our team won a stunning victory and Isaac Chan (6A) was named “Best Debater” in two of the debates. The adjudicators praised our debaters’ manner, confidence and tactful rebuttals.

The details of the semi-final are yet to be confirmed but without a doubt, the competitions ahead will be tough and challenging. I hope our debaters can be more driven and determined after the win. I wish them all the best in their upcoming competitions!

A Visit to ICC

Students listening to a presentation on the 20th floor
Thanks to this year's school theme "WArchiLab", putting stress on the exploration of architecture, classes of students take turn to visit the ICC. Class 6C had their turn on 16 Feb 2017. Let's see what Rooney and Hilton say about their experience.

6C Rooney Choy:

Do you know what ICC is? It is the International Commerce Centre (ICC), a unique and world-class development situated above Kowloon Station on the Airport Express line.

We are glad my class has an opportunity to visit ICC on Feb 16. My first image of ICC is “high”, a very tall building with high technology and powerful system. It is the tenth tallest building in the world and the tallest building in Hong Kong. It has 118 floors in total but we reached the 49th floor only. I really want to know the feeling if arrived the top of building, that will be amazing.

At first, we were guided by the ICC staff; they presented the structure, facilities and information of the building clearly. It is most memorable to visit the room of generators - how can the only few chillers support and provide services for whole building!

I was also attracted by the view from the 49th floor sky lobby. The spacious environment and the sea view gave me a comfortable and relaxing feeling. Let me find a time to visit the hotel at the top floor, so that I can enjoy the wonderful view again.

6C Hilton Chan:

You may wonder why is the ICC so special. It has 118 storeys, which is the tallest building in Hong Kong since 2010 and has replaced the 88-storey IFC. Its has a technology called double-deck lifts. It uses one cable but has two cabs attached together. It uses less energy than traditional lifts. The ICC has a special architectural feature called the dragon’s tail. It refers to the expanded base of the tower which provides strong support to the whole building.

The way of building of the ICC is incredible. You can’t build the ICC all by yourself as it may take more than 100 years. Therefore, you must have team work. It was first done by urban planners, then architects, then structural engineers, E & M engineers and surveyors. After it was built, the environmental consult needs to examine the tower. It teaches us a moral: teamwork is important.

I am so glad to have a chance to visit the ICC. Normally, we could just go the the shopping areas but this time we can know about the ICC deeply. I have learnt a lot from this experience. The ICC is such an amazing building.

P.5-6 Finalists and awardees
Who wouldn't love to see these talented boys performing English on stage at such a high level year after year?

One of YWPS's unique events - Speech Gala - has its Grand Finals held yesterday (14 Feb) at our school hall. We were fortunate enough to have had Ms Tanya Kempston, lecturer at HKU and experienced language arts judge, adjudicating our speech and drama event this time.

This is our 7th year running the event, and the finals were as competitive as ever! I was personally amazed by the P.5-6's Duologue and Public Speaking performances the most, with these events only existing at secondary school levels at the Hong Kong Speech Festival! Our boys delivered their acts so maturely and stunningly whether or not they were experienced as a stage performer. After all, Speech Gala is a celebration of English as an art form for all. We particularly welcome students who might yet to have a lot of successes in the areas of speech and drama.

Everybody tried their very best showing their most impressive performance to their peers and the adjudicator. Embraced by the beautiful voices and the vibrant energy from the audience, I am glad to have witnessed another year of dramatic blast!

I sincerely thank the School Headmistress and all the English teachers of YWPS for creating and valuing the magic of the Speech Gala! And of course, I thank our devoted boys, for whom the Gala was invented.

While videos of the event will come out shortly, in the meantime, visit our gallery and be entertained by the glorious faces of our performers, audience, and a very satisfied adjudicator!

Dr H C Lee

P.S. Ms Kempston sent me the following message:
"It was a joy to come to the Speech Gala yesterday. The standard was very high across all the categories and the accuracy of the pronunciation was  of a particularly high level. The students really gave their best effort and I could see there was careful thought which went into the preparation. lt was a very professional event indeed! Thank you again for inviting me."

68th Speech Festival Prize-winners' Recitals

2/6/2017

Our Junior Choral Speaking Team having their final rehearsal at Y Theatre
This is our second year in a row that our Junior Choral Speaking Team (English) storms the stage of Speech Festival's Prize-winners Recitals. The event was held on 21 Jan this year and our P.1-3 Choral Speaking Teammates got ready at Y Theatre - Youth Square at around 6 pm.

They performed Nash's verse "The Wendigo" lively and dramatically as the opening performance of the night session. The admiring applause was thundering.

To our delight, Wong Pak Ho from 2C also got invited to perform !

Pak Ho received his certificate from the Chair lady of the English Speech Sub-committee.
His cute performance of Cunliffe's verse "Soggy Greens" would make you smile from the inside! Congratulations to Pak Ho as well!
