Thanks to this year's school theme "WArchiLab", putting stress on the exploration of architecture, classes of students take turn to visit the ICC. Class 6C had their turn on 16 Feb 2017. Let's see what Rooney and Hilton say about their experience.

6C Rooney Choy:

Do you know what ICC is? It is the International Commerce Centre (ICC), a unique and world-class development situated above Kowloon Station on the Airport Express line.

We are glad my class has an opportunity to visit ICC on Feb 16. My first image of ICC is “high”, a very tall building with high technology and powerful system. It is the tenth tallest building in the world and the tallest building in Hong Kong. It has 118 floors in total but we reached the 49th floor only. I really want to know the feeling if arrived the top of building, that will be amazing.

At first, we were guided by the ICC staff; they presented the structure, facilities and information of the building clearly. It is most memorable to visit the room of generators - how can the only few chillers support and provide services for whole building!

I was also attracted by the view from the 49th floor sky lobby. The spacious environment and the sea view gave me a comfortable and relaxing feeling. Let me find a time to visit the hotel at the top floor, so that I can enjoy the wonderful view again.

6C Hilton Chan:

You may wonder why is the ICC so special. It has 118 storeys, which is the tallest building in Hong Kong since 2010 and has replaced the 88-storey IFC. Its has a technology called double-deck lifts. It uses one cable but has two cabs attached together. It uses less energy than traditional lifts. The ICC has a special architectural feature called the dragon’s tail. It refers to the expanded base of the tower which provides strong support to the whole building.

The way of building of the ICC is incredible. You can’t build the ICC all by yourself as it may take more than 100 years. Therefore, you must have team work. It was first done by urban planners, then architects, then structural engineers, E & M engineers and surveyors. After it was built, the environmental consult needs to examine the tower. It teaches us a moral: teamwork is important.

I am so glad to have a chance to visit the ICC. Normally, we could just go the the shopping areas but this time we can know about the ICC deeply. I have learnt a lot from this experience. The ICC is such an amazing building.

It must be a great experience for you to be learning in one of Hong Kong's landmarks. The double deck lift system is very impressive and innovative. I do agree with Hilton that teamwork is what it takes to succeed!

I too was impressed by the ICC and what the staff shared with us during the session. I hope you boys can work hard and earn your chance of working in this world famous commercial building in the future!
