A Master Class for our English Teaching Team!

Teaching IS a performing art! And we do take it seriously, artistically and dramatically!

Today (21 Sept) our English teaching team had the honour to have Speech and Drama expert Ms Mary Ann Tear grace our stage and share with us important tips to be a drama coach, which is necessarily something we do every day!

In this two-hour workshop, we learnt how to exercise our voice, tongue, facial muscles, limbs, dramatic minds and so much more. We had fun following her demonstration and learn how we may fuel our lessons with these exciting performance-based elements. Our boys will certainly love them!

Though many of our teammates are already highly experienced Speech and Drama coaches, we found this Master Class thoroughly fruitful and inspiring. This is in fact the second time we have a session with Ms Tear. The last time was back in 2012 when our team visited her arts centre in Singapore. We foresee that we still have many opportunities working with Ms Tear in the future and benefit from her impressively wide professional exposure and experience.

Who says teaching is a boring job?

Warming up for Magic!

“Low!” said she.
“High!”said they.
“There is a rat!” said she.
“I got my hat.” said they.

Our boys, together with all P.5 English teachers, moving up and down, had the warm up exercises.

It was a pre-show workshop (18 Sept) for all P.5 boys before the performance – Merlin the Magician on the 14th October in Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. The instructor led the boys into a path of knowing the story, and the knowledge of stage performance. During the hour of workshop, the boys had chances to perform, act, respond and play all sorts of warm-up activities. We, teachers, found it an enjoyable as well as meaningful session that inspired and prepared our students well for the performance ahead.

It is for sure the boys are looking forward to "Merlin the Magician" after this fun-filled experience.

Stay tuned for the real show!

Our teachers met some of the actors after the show!
PictureRight outside the theatre, feeling excited!
On 14 September, some English teachers of our school attended a show about Theatre-in-Education (TIE). TIE emphasizes the use of theatre techniques to create a fresh and dramatic learning process for students. As English teachers, we deeply hope to get some more insights and incorporate them into our existing drama curriculum.

The show was not only entertaining and stunning, but also inspiring. There were some snippets of different stories and familiar tales performed using fast paced comical innovative theatrical performance. We have gained a lot from the show. The part which impressed us the most was the interaction between the actors and the audience. Miss Fung and I were delighted to be invited to take part in the improvised scene of a comedy called “100 Movies in 1 Hour”. We received good response from the audience. It was fun!

Throughout the show, we learned that some life lessons could be taught through drama. For example, in the snippet of “Ugly Sisters”, students would think about how they often judge people based on appearance. Also, in the puppet show, students would be aware of the difference between drugs and medicine.

Overall, we were greatly fascinated by the actors’ enthusiasm and the quality of the production. It was a fruitful experience for us!

Mr. Dennis Tam (BEd, 1st Hon, HKU) got admitted to HKU through the Early Admission Scheme in 2009 in recognition of his outstanding HKCEE performance (6 “A”s including a straight-A in all English papers). He was placed in HKU’s top Dean’s Honours List for two consecutive years. He also captained the HKU debating team, leading them to victory in several high-stake debate competitions. He is looking forward to using his professional knowledge to help the teaching at Ying Wa Primary School. Here is a message from Mr. Tam:

“Hello everyone! I am really pleased to have had the opportunity to join Ying Wa primary school this year and I am looking forward to meeting you all. Please feel free to come and talk to me anytime, even if you are not in my class this year. I will be very happy to get to know you better. I hope that by maintaining good communication, we can work together to ensure the best education for every student in my class. I have been very impressed with how smart and well behaved all the boys are, and how happy they appear here at Ying Wa Primary School. I am very excited at being able to contribute to the education and welfare at this great school. I wish you all a fruitful and joyful year. Cheers!”
