5th NESTA Primary Debating Competition

Two wins and one loss in this Round Robin stage of the 5th NESTA Primary Debating Competition - this may not be enough to have brought us to the next round, but our school's effort was stunning and highly satisfactory, in any case.

The NESTA Primary Debating Competition, which we reached the Finals last year, has a different game play this time (probably due to an increase in competitors). Four Round Robin groups were arranged where we were put in a strong group where DBSPS, St Margaret's Co Ed English Sec & Pri School and Immaculate Heart of Mary School were our fellow competitors.

Our school also took the challenge to host the Round Robin as well today (25 Feb) when six tight matches were held from 1 pm, with the motion "Learning English by Reading Storybooks is Better than Watching TV". The judges obviously did not have an easy time agreeing with one another for each match. Nevertheless, the result of today is as follows:

Only the winner of the group will advance to the next round. Yes, we are disappointed that we lost a close match, but the learning experience was fantastic for our competitors, audience, teachers and coaches. Our debating team must have gained a lot from the constructive comments and our competitors' performances today. I am also proud of our teaching staff, especially the English teaching team, which demonstrated seamless teamwork to facilitate almost perfect logistics in order to enable the four schools to do six matches overlapping school hours so smoothly.

One thing is sure - debating in YWPS has got a brilliant start and it will be an area to be further developed in the years to come. The fire in our boys' speeches this afternoon is still burning in my heart. We have won more than we expected today.

I sincerely thank our participating warriors (6E Ryan Keung, 6A Matthew Chan, 6B Issac Lee, 6B Tom Kwok, 6B Jason Chan, and 6E Isaac Yan) and our debating coach Mr Tam for the tremendous effort displayed.

As Mrs. Lam says,`wining is not everything ` As a debater of both teams, I actually won a lot from this competition, my presentation skills have boosted a lot, I enjoyed the whole process really much.

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all the team members for your tremendous effort and enthusiasm. I am honoured and also fortunate to be the coach this year since I have such good students to be in my team. You all shone on stage yesterday, and I could not be more proud of everyone of you. You guys are excellent speakers no doubt, and it is simply amazing to have witnessed the huge improvement that all of you have made ever since our debating screening in October. All of your performance yesterday was absolutely fantastic and I am sure that all the audience would have agreed. It is even more unbelievable considering the fact this was the first time you boys ever participated in any formal debate matches. Your potential is virtually unlimited. This is definitely not the end of your journey of debate but only the start. Don't let your passion die and always remember the thrill and excitement when you are standing on stage. You guys made me so proud and I sincerely hope that you have all enjoyed the experience.

Mr. Tam

I want to thank Mr. Tam deeply. At first, I thought that debate was only a competition that competitors would yell at each other with no organized point. But when Mr. Tam invited me into the debate team, I found out that debate was much harder than I thought. I thank Mr. Tam deeply that he brought me this wonderful experience before I leave YWPS. He brought me a deeper understanding of presentation skills and I would like to thank him also for that.

Although we lost the match and Mr.Tam was really upset, I think we have to accept the truth that we didn't stage the rebuttals clearly. We will all learn from this experience and be better debaters over time.

Mr.Tam, I want to tell you I'm really glad that you invited me into the debate team and brought me this wonderful experience. I also made friends with Tom, Isaac, Jason and Matthew. They were good partners and I really liked cooperating with them.

Mr. Tam, don't be upset that we lost the match. Although, we will be going, you will have new chances when the P.5 students go up to P.6. Who knows, they might even get the first!!!

Your kind words almost brought me to tears and it is really encouraging to know that you have gained so much from debating. I also appreciate your positive learning attitude, and I am truly impressed by how much hard work you have spent on this competition.

As I have told you, we are NOT over yet and there are bigger enemies waiting for us! Never give up and trust me, you (all team members frankly) can be a remarkable debater in the future if you keep on trying!

Treasure the moments you feel sad as you may not have them so often. Right?
