[29 Nov] So much uncertainty before the Speech Festival this year as the Festival cancelled their sessions up to 27 Nov. The tricky thing was that our Thematic Group Speaking Team's contest was scheduled on 28 Nov. I had almost no hope that our session would be able to go on; I had little confidence to get on with the training; and I was planned for other outlets for these boys' performance if the cancellation would extend...but then, miraculously, the contest did go on as scheduled. And we took part, and won!

We were well aware of the fact that we were the only group entering this relatively less popular category this year (as the rules are harsh and preparation takes a lot more time than the others!). Nevertheless, I set a high goal for the boys
– they needed to get at least 88 marks from the adjudicator! And they did!

A bonus for the day was that we didn't expect to be able to watch any other competitors' work in the venue because our category had only us to perform. Yet, Thematic Group Speaking was grouped with Words and Movements in the same theatre. So, we watched all the performances and listened to the judge's feedback to them as well. That was some fruitful learning of styles and creativity on stage!

And the best moment, out of our expectation, was when the judge commented on our work and praised us by saying that we were awarded the highest score in the entire session (including the Words and Movements groups)! Somehow, in terms of scores under the same judge, we could still be proud that we outplayed the other groups!

We didn't give up, we didn't relax, we fought for a better "us" in the end regardless of whether or not there were opponents, and, we learned some valuable lessons. The topic of our act is "The Story of Rain" and it's of course water-related. Flexibility and adaptability are the key abilities of water that we learned in this amazing and unique experience. Keep this up, boys!

Dr H C Lee

P.S. We have video-recorded the final rehearsal of our performance. The clip will be available soon.

P.S.
It is an honor to have taken part in Thematic Group Speaking Team. It was my first time to have gotten such a high mark in a Speech Festival competition.
The story of rain fits our school theme this year as it helps us recognize the importance of rain and water. I think it must have been hard to have found four separate pieces that had rain in them. Shakespeare, Edward Thomas, the Bible and Dufu. The guy who wrote this script is a GENIUS.
It might have been hard during practice when we experienced the ups and down, the uncertainty if we could perform, but all my teammates put everything they had into the practices and we were all super focused on doing our part so I think it paid off in the end.
Thank you teammates and Dr Lee. I will treasure this experience.

It is my pleasure to be chosen by Dr. Lee. This is my first time to join the Thematic Group Speaking Team. From the english writer William Shakespear to the famous chinese poet Dufu, it is such a great script. I really enjoy the learning and performing. My teammates and I demonstrated communication and collaboration through the play. At last but not least, thank to our teacher Dr. Lee and my fellow teammates.

What a great experience for me and the whole team! Yes, we certainly had some ups and downs but we never gave up on ourselves and nor did Dr. Lee. This script is surely suitable for our theme this year, H2O. The script is really put together very nicely and to me, it is definitely a masterpiece and Dr. Lee has really outdone himself this time! The costume made by Miss Yau was really amazing. I’ve really learnt many more different literatures. It’s definitely an unforgettable experience for me, too bad I’m graduating this year so I can’t join next year, but still keep up the good work! I will always support you, Ying Wa boys! 😊

Thank you all who have supported us the whole time, Dr. Lee, Miss Yau, and my teammates. Thank God for leading us the whole time. We couldn’t do it without all of your help!

Not really a masterpiece by itself Calvin. You guys turned it into a masterpiece! And yes, we need to thank God for allowing this victory to happen. I didn't take it for granted.

To me, joining the Thematic competition changed me a lot. I didn't join any competitions in team before. I was afraid of messing up the whole team. In this year, Dr. Lee encouraged me. And I joined. In the first practice, Dr. Lee introduced how Thematic works. Schoolmates with good English like Calvin, Aden shared what they think. I just sat there till the end without saying anything.

However, after few lessons, I noticed that sometimes, they also made mistakes. I started to say what I want to say. Practicing and chatting with teammates also helped me a lot. My mother also encourages me to speak more.

I'm very happy now cause I can speak English now fluently and without lots of mistakes. Thank you teammates for listening my speeches. Thank you Miss Yao for giving advices and going to the venue with us. Thank you principal Miss Chan for giving us courage to join the competition. And at last, thank you mum and Dr. Lee for encouraging me. I'm not afraid anymore.

I'm moved by your words ChuChu...The idea of a group competition is exactly as you said – working together and supporting each other and discovering ourselves. I learnt a lot from you as well. Keep this up!

Thank you Dr.Lee,Miss Yao,teammates and all he people who helped us in these days.
It surprised me in a good way when Dr.Lee asked me if I wanted to join the Thematic Group Speaking Team, cause I looked forward to join a group speaking team before. It also surprised me in a very good way when I heard that we were awarded the highest score in the entire session ."No pain ,no gain.",if we didn't work hard ,we surely definitely won't be awarded the highest score in the entire session. Now,the pain has gone ,the gain has come!
There's another reason why we were awarded the highest score...session,it's the wonderful script of Rain. If it was me ,I can't made this masterpiece myself.
Again, thank you Dr.Lee,Miss Yao,teammates and all he people who helped us in these days.

I really enjoyed the competition. But to me,I liked the training most. Why?It’s all Dr. Lee’s awesome teaching.During the training sessions,I learned about the criteria of being a good speaker, for example, clear and loud voice, and good facial expressions. Also,I understood the meaning of the pieces which is clearly explained by Dr. Lee.It was a relief that the competition continued, thank God for that.We were successful this year, let’s hope and bless the team next year will have improvements.

Thank you Dr Lee for letting me join the team .I learnt a lot of facts from the poems, like how many days did the flood flooded the Earth. The script overall was perfect and great. It was a masterpiece!! Too bad I can't stay next year. I hope next year's team will succeed too. It must've given you a hard time to find all those poetic poem pieces. It has been an honor working with you.
Miss Yau also did a great job by making the wonderful costume! Thank you, everyone. Stay strong!👍😘😇🤗😺😸😉😊☺😆😁😃☺😬😘🤗

Thank you Dr. Lee for letting me join the Thematic Group Speaking Team. I've learnt a lot. I'm surprised when Dr.Lee invited me to join the team. Although we just got 8 people, we still got 88 marks. Why? It's because of the wonderful script of "Rain". We needed to thanks Dr. Lee again for writing this script. We have to thank Miss Yao too. The story of rain fits our school theme this year as it helps us recognize the importance of rain and water. She helped us make the costume of rain.I really enjoyed this competition.
At last, thank you Dr. Lee, Ms. Yao , teammates and everyone who helped us in these days.Thank you God for not cancelling the competition. Without him, we won't have the opportunity to perform!👍😘😇🤗😺😸😉😊😆😃😘🤗
