Our First Place Winners of the 75th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival
[22 Mar] The English Department congratulate the following brilliant boys who performed so well and earned a top 3 spot in the 75th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. Check out the full list of awardees below:
The face-to-face mode came back this time and it was wonderful that our competitors proved to us that they could genuinely and directly perform well on stage in front of a real audience.

We thank all of our competitors for trying so hard and congratulate the awarded boys once more for the memorable results in this Speech Festival. Well done and keep going!

Dr Lee

I am very joyed to win the solo public speaking since I put a lot of effort into my draft and I also spent a lot time practicing for it. Her I offer you a couple of tips on how to do a good public speech. I it will help you in your quest to get another flag.

1. When writing your script, always remember not to write out what you should say, instead write your script in point form and speak casually to link your points together. Each time you practice a different way to link your points together is allowed but you should eventually settle on what you think is the best one. This way, your speech will be more natural and comfortable for your audience. A couple stutters during the performance will not be seen as lack of practice, instead it will make your audience feel you are actually communicating with them. (I am NOT telling you not to memorize your script well, I am just suggesting that a stutters will make your speech more natural but do NOT fake the stutters)

2. When writing your script, you should always write what you truly think or experienced. This will lead to a more comfortable speech for you. If you fake your experience, you will not be able to show your feelings well. You should also interact with your audience in your speech a couple times to increase the effectiveness of your speech. (Do not expect your audience to reply.)

I hope these tips helped you. Best Wishes in your speech performances ahead!

I was very happy and surprised when i won the event, there were some students that also preformed very well, i am happy because my hard efforts finally paid off ! If you want to do a good speech, you should read the words clearly, and you should also put some emotions in your poem, as in my group, some spoke like robots. You should learn about what the poem is writing about and put correct emotions in the speech.

It was my first face-to-face mode performed in Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. It was so excited to have 2 winners on the stage this year!
Thank you Miss Jackie for training the poem and I will keep going!

I am very lucky to have been able to participate and win in this year's 75th Hong Kong Speech Festival, both in Solo Verse and in Public Speaking. Here are some tips for you.

Firstly for Public Speaking.

1. You have to put in effort when writing your script. You should write it as a speech, and not as an essay, which means that you have to have more interactions with the audience. Also, try to put in personal experience so that your points and views are more persuasive.
2. Before you go to the competition, you have to practise daily, and train your muscle memory, so that you can at least recite the speech if you suddenly become very scared.
3. When speaking, try to be relaxed. Only this can help you perform better. Since this is public speaking, you have to have interactions with your audience, so don’t recite everything, make changes to make it more natural.

Now for the Solo Verse.

1. When preparing the poem, go online and check about the writer. Understand his/her writing style. That will help you understand how to describe the poem.
2. Understand the poem’s tone. Read the poem over and over again, and try to understand what the poet wants to express. Add your feelings and gestures to make it creative.

These are the tips that were very useful for me, and hope they are for you too. Also, I would like to give a big thanks to Dr Lee, who trained me in both categories.

I was extremely excited to be the winner of 3 solo speaking events in a row. Specially thanks to Ms Vera Fung who provided me practical solo versa speaking training and led me more confident on the stage. Expressive emotions could make audiences be touched is the key successful factor in speaking. I am very much looking forward to joining the 76th Speech Festival next year.

I was grateful to be the winner of the Solo Verse Speaking in the 75th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. It was the first time I experienced the face-to-face performance mode. It was really impressive and unforgettable.

To share tips on doing speech well, confidence is the most important. It can make your voice well projected and delivered. Besides, a lovely array of pitch, pace and volume can also raise your sense of performance.

Special thanks to Miss Jackie for the encouragement and reminders.

I am very delighted that I won the competition. It is my first time joining the face-to-face competition, and I think this is my most nervous time ever!

So, here are some of my tips for winning the competition. Make good use of intonation, and do some slight movements of your head to make the adjudicator more entertained. Remember to give some emotions because if you don’t, the adjudicator would feel bored.

Special thanks to Ms. Peggy for supporting me always.
