Principal Chan (left) and Dr Lee (right) presented the trophies to Calvin Tong in the School Hall on 8 Jun, the first school day after the pandemic school suspension.
[8 Jun] Calvin Tong of 6C earned his GOLD AWARD at the 14th Daily Readers “Read Out Loud Competition” final which was held on 30th May. The prizes were announced right after the contest but the ceremony had to be done at school after the trophies arrived at school from the organisation.

This contest required the submission of a read aloud audio file of one of the chosen poems for the preliminary round, a live online read poetry performance in the semi-finals and a live online poetry performance plus poetry comments for the finals. As a multiple Speech Festival top prize winner, Calvin smoothly entered the final and snatched Gold!

“I’d like to thank my parents and my teacher Dr Lee for the long training. This is my first time joining this competition and I never thought I would win the top prize. And I’d like to thank the judges for allowing me to win. I hope to come back next year!” Calvin said after the award announcement.

Due to the pandemic, the live shows were all shifted to online shows using a web conferencing platform. And Calvin didn’t seem to be affected by the change of mode, which showed beyond his speech competence. This is our second time joining this competition. The first time was two years ago when Lawrence Ma took the challenge and also went home with a Gold Award.

CONGRATULATIONS to Calvin and here is Calvin
’s final performance as recorded live:

Firstly I'd like to congratulate Calvin on winning this competition. Calvin's opponents were very strong, but he did a lot better, his speech was full of power and emotion so it was in another level. I would also like to thank him because he didn't only win for himself, he also brought our school some glory!

Congratulations to you for winning this competition! I'm really glad to see that you've brought good news to us amidst this depressing time. I could see why you were chosen to be first place. The poem was presented with such emotion and passion for the sun! Once again congrats for winning the competition! I hope you'll get even more awards in the future!

Calvin, congratulations on coming first in this competition! You really brought this poem to life! Not only did you articulate the speech with such heartfelt emotion and precision, but you also had these gestures that made the speech even better! I hope you’ll get more chances in the future to show the world your talent! Congratulations again!

Thanks for all of your support! It was a really unforgettable experience as it was held on Zoom because of the epidemic, not a really stable way to do as there could be problems with the network, neighbours renovation noises, etc.

Many thanks to Dr. Lee who helped me advance the comments part. I am honoured to participate in this competition as it helps me in the long run a lot. I will do my best if there are more competitions and try to bring YWPS to glory.

Congratulations! It is obvious that Calvin won the competition. He read the poem with natural movements unlike most competitors. He also read it with dramatic emotions and appropriate tone. It is smart of him to comment on the rhyming, theme and his favourite part of the poem. I couldn’t have done it better myself!

An absolutely beautiful win, Calvin! Your emotions really brought out the character's hate for the toxic gas. A stunning performance that outshined the other competitors! The win was decided from the very start, to be frank! Good job on the win!
