Debating Team receives their trophy from one of the adjudicators
[28 May] Congratulations to our Debating Team for another prestigious Champion trophy!

On 24 May, our Debating Team (Roderick Yuen 6A, Shaun Ng 6B, Ethan Ngai 6E) had their final match at the City University of Hong Kong for UNSDGs Debating Competition 2022/23 (UNESCO Hong Kong Association) against Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section) with the motion "That homework is good for primary school students". Our side was the negative team and strongly argued that homework is bad for children!

It was indeed an entertaining but difficult match and the affirmative side had some great points and rebuttals. The judges agreed that it was very hard to make a final decision but in the end, they thought we were more solid and consistent and thus granted us the champion trophy!

Great job boys and thanks to our debating coach Mr Ching!

I would like to express my greatest gratitude towards Principal Chan, Dr. Lee and my fellow teammates for coming to support us in this debating competition.

In P.5, I started learning debating with my English tutor and I found myself liking it a lot. Since then, I have looked up to those who are great in debating. So, I was determined to join the English debating team in P.6 and attended the debating team interview, and was delighted to be accepted into the English debating team!

In the English debating team, my members and I have been joining various debating competitions, and I have certainly learnt valuable debating skills by preparing and absorbing new ideas for different competition motions in the lessons taught by Mr. Ching.

In this competition, my teammates (Roderick and Ethan) and I have worked hard to strive for the goal of winning the competition. We often had ZOOM meetings before the competition, to discuss our points. It's definitely a great experience to work with them!

The final round of the competition was certainly a tough game and the opponent really brought up some great points. Although there were some minor flaws on our side, we still managed to get the champion trophy for YWPS. Thanks so much for Mr. Ching's great guidance and support throughout the competition!

This was truly a memorable experience that I will not forget -- I believe our hard work really paid off. I can't believe that my dream of obtaining a champion in debating has eventually come true in my last year of my primary school life!

I’m truly honored to be part of the Debating team this year. There have been some ups and downs in this experience. However, throughout the course of the competition, we remained determined and often hosted daily Zoom meetings to discuss our points. The final match was especially challenging as the opposing team was also quite formidable, forming a case that we hadn’t prepared for too much. Furthermore, it was a live debate, which I was not used to since I had spent two years of debating on Zoom. This new element added a new sense of nervousness, and I was hardly able to get my act together. Fortunately, I’m glad to say that we were able to sail through this challenge by discussing as a team.

As debate is ultimately a team activity, I’d like to first offer my heartfelt gratitude to my teammates – without your hard work and your encouragement, nothing would have been possible. I also want to thank Mr Ching for his guidance regarding different angles of the motion and presentation skills in order to home in on making my speech more convincing. I started debating with Mr Ching’s team in P5 with little knowledge of debating, and thanks to Mr Ching’s support, I have really grown as a debater on the whole. Finally, I also must thank Principal Chan, Dr Lee and all the students who came to watch us debate at CityU – your presence and rallying made my heart still.

Participating in the debating team has been a memorable experience in all aspects. During three years of debate under my school, I not only feel that I have enhanced critical thinking skills regarding different social topics (e.g. homework, commercialization, gambling, celebrities in humanitarian efforts, etc.), but also more confident of my presentation and language abilities. For those of you who are reading this and interested in debate, I assure you that it will be a hugely enriching experience!

This has truly been a meaningful experience for myself. For this competition, our team and I has been improving our scripts, finding useful research, and accepting comments and suggestions from Mr. Ching himself. Surely, it requires a lot of time and effort, and it is inevitable to make mistakes along the way, but thanks to Mr. Ching, I eventually pull through. When I saw the list about which debating team we were going against, we were all really nervous because we were going against Maryknoll, we knew we were going against a tough opponent. When we arrived at the City U university, which was the venue we were supposed to debate at, everyone was really nervous. During the debate, I think we all performed very well, and Mr. Ching even thought our chances were pretty high. During the break, while waiting for the adjudicator's comments, we all reviewed our performance. Finally, it was time for announcing the results. We won. Everyone was overjoyed. Big thanks for Mr. Ching for giving and the team a lot of support and accepting me as a debate team member. I highly recommend this to students, as it is definitely a very meaningful experience.
