The motion of the competitions was that “Learning English by reading storybooks is better than watching TV”. Both schools sent out two teams in which one was the affirmative and one was the negative. The competitions took place at our school and we were honoured to have invited Mr. Richard Woods, Mr. Thomas Ching, Ms Claire Leung (former member of the English Department), and Mr. Allen Ng (the debate coach of Wah Yan Primary School) to be the adjudicators.
All the teams were really well-prepared and the competitions quickly heated up as both sides presented their strongest arguments and rebutted the opposing team. The matches were really intense and the audience was all very impressed by the students’ wonderful performance on stage. After a long and careful deliberation, the judges announced the results and Ying Wa’s team secured victory in both matches while Jason Chan (6B) and Ryan Keung (6E) were each named “Best Debater”.
All the team members were thrilled about the results but it is important that they do not slide into complacency and rest on their laurels but keep improving themselves. Let’s hope that they can keep up the good performance during the upcoming official NESTA Debating competitions!
