Estonia Educational Trip 2024: Day 3

at the porch of the Embassy of China
(29 Apr) Day 3 is the first day we do official visits.

After breakfast, we met people from the Ministry of Education and Research who shared with us the education framework of Estonia as well as how the country came top in Europe in terms of PISA scores.

Similar topics continued as we moved to Tallinn University with the speaker giving us more in-depth sharing. We now understand that even though Estonia is famous for their advanced and effective education system, they have been facing challenges, with shortage of teachers as one of their major problems. Comparatively, Hong Kong is more fortunate that we always have a good supply of quality teachers yearly. And, by the way, many of them choose to teach in our beloved YWPS!

Another highlight of the day is that we went to the Embassy of China where we were received sincerely by Ms Guo, the Ambassador, who is the Chinese representative in Estonia. It was an honour for our group to have been hosted by her team. In addition, her team gathered with us for dinner this evening. There was a lot of fruitful sharing in the restaurant, together with toasting and laughter.

Overall, this day can be described as "warm" as the Ambassador gave us a very warm welcome, which made us feel like a family gathering. And the biggest blessing today is that we could still have a decent Chinese dinner in this country despite that the Chinese population is small.

I am looking forward to tomorrow's school visits. It must be interesting. Write you more soon!

Dr Lee

Q1.I think Mr Kwan was thinking what was the name of the tree (the tree on picture 2) at that cool moment.

Q2.This weird tree was as tall as a giraffe and as cool as Dr Lee. Therefore, I think this kind of tree was called pollarding.

Q1. I noticed that the time wasn’t early, Mr Kwan was looking to the right, and he was wearing sunglasses. Maybe he was looking at the beautiful sunset as he thought about how we could shine as bright as the sun if we worked harder.

Q2. This tree was as scary as a thermonuclear bomb and as weird as an owl’s neck (haven’t you wondered how an owl can turn its head around 180 degrees?). This tree’s name is unknown. A lot of students say that it’s name is pollarding but that is just the name of the technique used to cut branches or leaves off trees. But because I think the tree’s branches look like hands bursting out of the underworld, I think this tree is called the “Escapee’s tree”.

1. In this first picture, we see Mr Kuan staring at the sky. If you look closely, you can discover that it's the afternoon or even sunset, if I am not wrong. So Mr Kuan might be looking at the beautiful sunset and thinking about us.

2. From the information I have gathered online, the tree in picture two looks like a pollarding tree, which means cutting the branches to a short state to restrict growth. If I had to describe this tree, I would say its branches are as scary as spiders and the bottom part is as thick as a pole.

Question 1: In the first picture, we can see Mr Kwan wearing sunglasses sitting down on a bench with his legs crossed and was staring at the sky. I think he was staring at the sky because he thinks that time passes so quickly and the third day of this trip was almost about to end.

Q1. I think he is just posing for the camera in the picture or perhaps is enjoying the view of the park in front.

Q2. This tree has been cut down so that it is wider than it is tall. This has been done to preserve it, and to give it a more "natural" look. In my opinion this tree disturbingly looks like zombies trying to crawl their way out of a tomb by reaching ou for help with their hands.

Q1. Both the sunset view and the strange tree prove to be thought-invoking sights. As a student of Mr Kwan I can vouch that he is a devout Christian. A fair assumption would be that Mr Kwan was looking at the tree and the sunset, no doubt but simultaneously appreciating the work of God.
