Estonia Educational Trip 2024: Day 5

5/1/2024

Picture
(1 May) Day 5 is a public holiday worldwide. As we don't have official school visits today, we took the liberty to learn from other aspects of Estonia.

Our first stop was the peaceful Tallinn Botanic Garden. Blue sky, large grass fields, a sense of refreshment and not a single piece of rubbish on the ground, what else could we ask for to start the day? If Hong Kong had a place like this, it would probably be crowded, noisy and polluted. After all, Estonia's population is only around 1/6 of Hong Kong's but 41 times larger in terms of land area.

Second stop, we went to Estonian Open Air Museum where the traditional Estonian rural architecture, lifestyle and culture are showcased. Thanks to the endless sunlight, the walk was pleasant and warm. There were ancient cottages, souvenirs booths, food trucks, as well as workshops for woodwork for families. Kids were even taught to handle saws!

The last stop was Eesti Kunstimuuseum, the Art Museum of Estonia. The building was supposed to be the summer palace for Peter the Great, now turned into a place full of artworks. The place wasn't huge, but I feel awesome to have the chance to step into this historical place where ancient Russian royal members set foot on.

Overall, this day can be described as "historical" as we travelled back in time to experience some of the forgotten stories. And the biggest blessing today is that, again, we timely picked the right day with superb weather to have these outdoor walks this morning and afternoon.

More school visits tomorrow. Write you more soon!

1. I think the sign shows a story of a man noticing a wolf due to his dog and scares the dog away with a device with noise so I think it is trying to say that if you encounter a wolf just spread a loud noise with any device you have.
2. I would give it the title “ The flow of time,”. It is because the old man is sad that the little child is ungrateful of the situation they are in and the child is frowning because he doesn’t want to poor anymore. This makes a strong contrast between the pair, making it a good life lesson and a beautiful painting.

Question 1:

I think the sign means when you saw a wolf in the park, get out some device and wave it while you make a loud noise.

Question 2:

I would name this drawing 'Grandfather'. This painting is so realistic and it shows family love and I think there is a deep meaning behind this painting although I can't figure it out.

Q1: I think the sign is trying to say we have to be careful that there may be wolves here and told us to use some weapons to scare them.

Q2: I think the topic is ‘The Grandpa and Grandson’. The painting tells us to cherish nature as the place that the grandpa and grandson stayed was destroyed by humans.

Q1. This sign shows us a story about a boy scaring a wolf away with a traditional Estonian toy which creates sound. Maybe this is the place where the same boy scared the wolf away or the sign could be reminding us how to scare away wolves in Estonia.

Q2. This drawing is incredibly lifelike, using fine expressions to portray the boy and his elderly guardian in a depressed feeling. The cut trees in the background also add to the sombreness. But if I were the artist, I would make the sky a light grey and the tone of the grass a bit darker, to enhance the feeling of hopelessness. I would name this drawing “Grief” to add a hint behind the lore of the painting.

Question 1 : I think the sign is trying to say you should not leave your things or belongings (like a dog or bag etc…) alone and should keep an eye on it if somebody wants to steal it.

Question 2 : I would name this masterpiece The shepherd and the “ Dead Child”. I named it because if you look carefully to the picture, you can see that the boy might be in severe hunger or a poor situation as the background shows you and he is barefoot and is wearing old, torn clothes. And the boy is in a situation in an event like the Potato Famine which happened between 1845-52. Also, the shepherd might be a dragoon which lost his horse.

Q1: This might be a story about a sheepdog. In the image, the sheepdog is vigilantly guarding the flock, allowing the shepherd to rest more relaxedly against a tree. Should a pack of wolves appear, the sheepdog barks alertly, prompting the shepherd to quickly grab a stool nearby to use as a defensive weapon. Of course, if this is in an open outdoor space, the picture not only tells of a once prime sheep grazing area but also warns visitors to be cautious of wild beasts that may be lurking nearby.
Q2: I would name this painting "Grandfather and Grandson." There are several outstanding aspects of this painting: First, the portrayal of the characters is particularly delicate, especially their facial expressions. The child looks aggrieved, leaning on his grandfather for comfort. The grandfather, appearing impoverished and downcast, seems to have trouble even caring for himself, yet he still soothes the little boy with a look full of tenderness and concern. Second, the use of color and light in the painting is very meticulous. Besides striving for realism in the content of the painting, the capture of light in both the background and foreground is exceptionally well done. The cool tones used to render the environment, contrasted with the warm tones of the grandfather and grandson, also create a striking juxtaposition.

Sorry, Dr. Lee, I did not read the title carefully. This is the new answers to your questions

Q1. This picture is telling shepherds to bring a machine that (I think) makes loud noises that scare wolves away in case they encounter it.

Q2. "Calamity" will be an appropriate name if you ask me. The forest must have gone through a disastrous event to be reduced to no more than tree stumps and the boy and his grandfather must have gone a lot to be in this horrible situation. The painting is very realistic, it has even clearly drawn the old man's wrinkles on his forehead. It also successfully gave me a lonely, sad feeling with the homeless boy and grandfather and the remains of the forest.

1. I think that the wooden sign talks about a story. In the story, a shepherd and his dog were ambushed by a hungry wolf. The man took out a weapon which emitted a shrill noise and scared the wolf away.
2. I would give it the name "The baby-sitting grandfather", I think that the good thing about this painting is that it has a good moral behind it---To protect the environment. In the background, all the trees are cut down, so the two cannot find a tree to rest under.

1. The story on the board is about how a man and a dog warded off a wolf. It tells us to always be cautions about our surroundings and that loud noises repel wolves.
2. I would name this piece of artwork "alone" since the two people are the only form of life visible. The grass under their feet are yellow and withering, and stumps are all that are left of the trees. The message of this painting is to protect nature.

Q1. The sign depicts a wolf attack. The dog warns the man in the picture, presumably his owner and the owner scares away the wolf with a sound-emitting device. A fair assumption would be that the sign is trying to tell noise is the key to succeed in escaping from a wolf attack, should it happen as Estonia is home to around 200 wolves.

Q2. I would deem the painting ‘I need’. The old man in the painting, presumably the young boy’s grandfather is most likely telling him something. Around them, leaves are withered and trees have been reduced to short stumps. However, the old man himself is clutching a cane ironically made out of wood or bark. I assume he was telling his grandson about the difference between need and want. People may their houses to be adorned with beautiful, delicate woodworks. The rich may have rosewood chopsticks and snakewood chairs, and these two types of wood are two of the rarest in the world. Yet the grandfather is using a simple cane made out of bark, and he needs it to be mobile. This may be far-fetched, but it was the first thing that came to me when I looked at this painting.

For Q1, I think that it is about a shepherd and his shepherd dog guarding his sheep. In the third picture, the shepherd is approaching by a wolf. The shepherd apparently grabs a gragger and whirls it, making a lot of noise and scares the wolf away. I think it is an advertisement for the graggers sold in the souvenir shop

Q1. As Estonia is home to 200 wolves, I think the sign tells us with the comic that when we unlucky encounter a wolf, we should make some noises to scare it away from us.
Q2. I think the painting should be called ‘ Grandfather’s stories’. You can see that the old man, known as the grandfather, is whispering something in the boy’s ear. I think the child is complaining about the weather and the bad environment they are in, while the old man trying to comfort and cheer him up by telling him good stories sitting on the trunk of the tree.
