[13 May] Congratulations to Su Yue Sheng (Aden) 6E and So Yu Hang (Aldon) 3E for winning Champion and 1st Runner Up in their respective Public Speaking categories at the "21st Century Cup" Hong Kong Region Final.

This is a reputable and very high quality English public speaking contest initiated in Mainland China over 20 years ago. The Hong Kong Region has been a part of it since 2017. The contest involves 3 rounds and in the Finals, 6 judges score each finalist's speech with two follow-up questions to which competitors have to respond immediately.

This year, Aldon So 3E got through to the junior final while Aden Su and Jayden Tang made it to the senior final. The finals were held on 8 May 2021 (Sat) and the results were launched yesterday (12 May). We are more than thrilled to receive a Champion and a First Runner Up in the end!

Aden who won the Champion of the senior group is invited to represent Hong Kong in the National Finals which will be held in the coming July/August. He will compete with winners from 80 other regions in China.

An award ceremony for the results of the Hong Kong Region Final will be held in July. More updates will be available soon.
Meanwhile, let's take a look at Aden's initial submitted video for the first round with the speech title of "Harriet Tubman is the bravest person in my eye":

Below is Aldon's initial submitted video for the first round with the speech title of "My Favourite Festival":
Congratulations to the two boys again!

First of all, thank you Dr Lee for training me and giving me this opportunity. I really enjoyed throughout the competition, and learned a lot of things. It was my first time having to answer a question immediately and casually within 45 seconds. I really enjoyed the feeling of butterflies having a party in my stomach and wondering if I had made the right choice to say this word, this sentence or even if the answer was good enough itself. I learnt that I still lack experience and will try again next year💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Also Aden, I watched your performance and couldn’t take my eyes off. I absolutely agree with you, Harriet is probably the most bravest. Congratulations! 🥳🥳🥳 This is a score you deserve for a spectacular, amazing and fluent speech.

Lastly, I would like to thank Dr Lee again, because without his teaching and care, I wouldn’t have even gotten an award. Thank you Dr Lee! Best of luck, Aden!

Firstly, I would like to praise Aldon for your AMAZING performance! Your facial expressions were very good and I particularly liked the quotes from Mother Teresa who indeed spread more happiness and love into our world.

Now, I would like to thank Dr Lee for his support in this contest. Dr Lee instructed and advised me a lot throughout this contest with my script. He also taught me many practical skills for the Q&A portion of the contest, which was the key to my success in this competition. I’d also like to thank my mother for accompanying me throughout the competition and for supporting me wholeheartedly.

I was quite nervous for the semi-finals because it was the first live competition I had participated in since the pandemic began. I stumbled while saying my speech in front of the judges. This time, there would be no do overs and no take two. The judges had heard and seen my mistakes. I thought for sure I would not make it into the finals. So, you can imagine my shock when it was announced that I would be going into the finals! I thought I was prepared after a week of, well, preparation. I was confident in my English language skills. However, upon looking at the mix of contestants in the waiting room, I once again felt rather outmatched. It was then that I realized that I shouldn’t care whether these other students were better than me or not. The fact that I had also gotten into the finals meant that I had gained the approval of the judges. It shouldn’t matter whether I won or lost. I just had to try my very best and not have any regrets.

I’m so excited to be able to represent Hong Kong in the National Finals, along with 80 other champions from nationwide regions. I’ll cherish this rare opportunity, and I promise to make YWPS proud. I will make our city, Hong Kong proud! Thank you.

Thanks to both of you for your kind words. I am proud of you! Your journey in this very special contest is surely inspiring and I hope more of our boys can experience this next year. And hopefully, the contest can be done physically next time so that the children can really learn from one another. Congratulations again 👏💖

To begin with, I would like to say that Aldon’s and Aden’s performance are very admirable and powerful which definitely deserve a prize. I like Aden’s content a lot, I really agree that Harriet Tubman was one of the most courageous, inspirational political activist of US history. You are also a fluent, cogent, and natural speaker. For Aldon, I love you spreading the message of kindness and giving by your speech. But in particular, the quotes from Mother Teresa deeply struck me, also, your personal experience of giving is very touching and emotional.

Secondly, I would like to express my attitude towards Dr Lee for helping, assisting, teaching and motivating me through these three rounds of this high-level competition. I definitely learnt a lot from you. I am also grateful for you to put extra efforts in teaching me.

Once again, thank you Dr Lee and congratulations to Aldon and Aden for accomplishing great achievements in this competition. By the way, good luck on the next competition, Aden! 🥳🥳

Thanks Jayden. Surely you did a fantastic job reaching the final too. I am glad that you find the experience positive and enjoy the performances of Aldon and Aden. The contest is really tough, not to mention that public speaking itself is already tough. Keep practising this art, be brave, and I am sure you will easily be a great speaker and leader in the future!

Thanks for your compliments Jayden, you were just as good as me to get into the finals. I cherish this experience for us both to enter the semi-finals and finals, for us to support each other in the waiting room. I agree with Dr Lee: I hope more Ying Wa boys can experience this competition and support each other as we did. Thanks again Jayden and Dr Lee!
