H2O Series: Water (Ms Peggy Yau)

(Text by Ms Peggy Yau)

Water.

When I was invited to be the next teacher who shares something related to water on the English Department website (here), I carefully thought about it.

Water cycle? Water pollution? Hydrology? Oceanography? I’m sure you all can tell a little about it.

The wondrous experience in the water? A deadly accident in the water? The best descriptive writing about the water? They shouldn’t be something too unfamiliar to you.

Then I think I shall do something different, something special – in a sense it can make you think, make you reflect on it, and make you respond to it. Here, I have written a fictional poem titled The Last Drop of Water. What would you do if you have the last drop of water? What would I do with my last drop?
Picture
The Last Drop of Water

Is the Earth coming to the end?

Dried rivers, dried seas.
Dried puddles, dried streams.
There’s no clean water, not anywhere.
How can our beloved home be so bare?

Now beside the last withered apricot,
Stands a little kiddie with a little pot.
Inside it he shall carefully retain
The most precious last drop of rain.

And take a look at everyone,
Who all hold their last drop but never for fun.
Clutching their bottles, heartbroken and frail,
Would it make the very last fairy tale?

Suddenly the kiddie who always stays hopeful,
Comes up with a wheeze that’s rather unusual.
“Let’s collect all the last drops and give the apricot some drinks.
The apricot shall live, and so do other tiny living things.”

No scoffing, no disapproving,
Everyone lines up to feed the poor shrunken thing.
Slowly and gradually the apricot looks a little beamy,
And look – oh the moistened earth is now going streamy.

The stream gently enriches the soil and the plants around,
And the most amazing thing happens – there is a little cloud!
From cirrus to cumulus to stratus,
Till it finally becomes too heavy and reaches a raining status.

Now the last drops from everyone become the last drinks for the dry,
Then the water goes to the soil and becomes the cloud in the sky.
Hydrated rivers, hydrated seas.
Hydrated puddles, hydrated streams.

Is the Earth coming to the end?
No, it is not if we’re all devoted to be a friend!

What about you? What is your last drop of water? Can you create some great pieces, may it be a poem, a story, or a fable? Looking forward to your responses.

Very nice work Ms Yau. Love your poem on saving the environment through collective effort. Great positive energy there and you made a great choice to voice out your thoughts via poetry. For the theme of water, besides contributing the first article in the H2O series here, I also put together a 15-min script for a thematic stage performance for our boys! More sharing on it will be done later on! ^o^

Beautiful poem! I liked how you described everybody putting their effort together to save the apricot, which is what we need now to make Earth a better place. Yes - one person definitely isn't enough, but all the inhabitants of Earth might just be enough. As the saying goes, many drops of water make streams and oceans. If everybody does their part, we might be able to save our Earth from withering away! Let's start by being environmentally-friendly ourselves!

I loved your poem very much. You emphasized that the importance of the precious water on Earth. I can feel that you are really trying to persuade the readers to change their lifestyle of using water by telling them that we should all be environmentally-friendly. Besides, I think the desirable thing of this poem is that you told us the moral indirectly. We should really learn from your poetic skills!!!! What a nice poemmmm!!

What an inspiring poem! It was beautiful how you weaved such a beautiful poem and had such a significant moral sink in! I really loved how you put together a story that talks about water on the surface, but has a greater moral inside. The poem had the message of teamwork hidden inside, letting students decipher it and figure out what it truly means. I hope we will take this story and put it into use in our own lives, for as Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.” From now on, let’s all work together and help our world become great!

What a nice poem! I loved how you, while writing a poem, also brought out that the water on Earth is slowly fading away, right beneath our very eyes. I adored the children's generosity to save the apricots from withering away, instead of drinking it.As John C. Maxwell one said,“Teamwork makes the dream work.”To save our beloved mother Earth, we need to all work together and start taking actions right this instant!

What a meaningful poem! The morale appeared in my mind after I thought of it for several times. It is simple but clear: A single person's strength could not do many things, but when we all humans work as a team, all of us, we could change the whole world. Also, the morale was indirectly told to me, so it gave me a chance to figure it out. And finally, I was truly surprised by the little boy's action: giving the last drop of rain to the withered apricot. It was a surprising twist that caught me off guard! Well done, Ms Yau!

Wow! You really outdone yourself this time, Miss Yau!

This piece is definitely a masterpiece! It surely brings out a deep moral—teamwork. As someone once quoted,” Together we stand, divided we fall.” There was a surprising twist at the end when the little boy proposed to gather all the water left on Earth to feed the shrunken apricot. Yes, water resources is really disappearing from Earth quickly. We need to work together to save our beloved Earth! : )

What a wonderful poem!!!You did it so well by using a poem to bring out the importance of the water on earth! It's true that when we are united together,we can do much more and better than when we are alone! If we try and save the earth by one person, we definitely won't succeed. But if we try and save earth together, we will have a big chance to succeed! Now we must save the earth from not only water problems and all the environmental problems, let's save the earth together!!!

The poem is definitely an absolute masterpiece. It just clearly, explicitly tells us that if we don't stop wasting water molecules, the Earth will turn into the wasteland that is beautifully described in the poem. But, it is true that if we unite our puny individual forces into a powerful one, there's a chance we can pull through. Still, none of this would have happened if we didn't waste water in the first place, right? Really, there is strength in numbers----- especially in large ones.
Now if you'll excuse me, let's moisture the world together!

What a fantastic poem, Ms.Yau!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I think you took a long time trying to rhyme the words. If I have only a drop of water 💧, I would put the little green things that the old man 👴in the book 📖 “James and the Giant Peach” gave me into the 💧. Then, it would become many drops of water 💦. I would drink three quarters of them and leave a quarter to take a shower 🚿. (Not a bath 🛀 !)

If I have the last drop of water, I think I will drink a little bit ^0^ and balance I will give it and help the earth.

What a brilliant poem! I like this poem very much! I think the poem is meaningful. I learned two points - one, we need to share. No act of kindness is ever wasted. If you share or help, you will feel happy too! Another point is that we should not waste water. Our water is precious and we should cherish water. If we don't have water, we will die and it comes the end of the world! Thanks for the good poem.

What a meanful poem!

If I have the last drop of water, I will treasure it.
But it is too late to awareness.

I will put it in the magic hole,
and hope the Magician change the drop to more.
Let’s put more drop in the pot,
boil them and change to water vapor.

Water vapor going up to sky,
let’s built up and change to a cloud.
When the clouds become bigger,
the rain will drop down to the ground.

Yeah! I will have more drops of water now!!
I promise I don’t waste it anymore🙂🙂

What an awesome poem, Ms. Yau! I think you have made a great effort to complete this poem. If I have the only drop of water, I’d prefer keep it, plant more plants and give to other people that in need or always don’t have clean and fresh water supply but not to drink it, waste it or throw it.

That's a great poem👍. Water is really important to people ."Dried rivers, dried seas.Dried puddles, dried streams. There’s no clean water, not anywhere. How can our beloved home< be so bare>?"If it's real,so we'll have big troubles.
''Water!Water!Everywhere!
Waste!No!Water!Anywhere!''
"Sow!A!Seed!And!Grow!From!It"
Do not waste water anywhere.
In the future we'll have
The Last Drop of Water

Writing takes one's heart to do it well.

It doesn't need to be too complicated. So long as you have a basic idea, colour it with a background and a little more details. Follow your gut feeling. Decorate it a little more with some rhyming words. Then you may write a poem too.

Everyone has to take the first step to begin a new journey. Why don't you take today's time to have a new start? =)

And also, the poem is about making sacrifices. -- giving up something valuable to you (the last drop) to help someone else (the plant, the earth...). We don't expect anything the moment we sacrifice, but everything is in the Hands of God and He has got the best results for us. Do you agree?

I thought very guilty of this as we all have played a part in nearly destroying all the Earth's water sources and I think you wrote it out and described it pretty nicely.I hope everyone, instead of playing a part in destroying the Earth's water sources, can turn this dreadful situation around and not destroy, but save it's water sources

I think your poem is wonderful! I would give the last drop of water to a water cloning machine.
I will collect all the last drops of water and put them into this machine.Inside the water cloning machine,it makes the water drops come alive and become water drop genies.I use multiplication to replicate the water drop genie from one genie to multiple genies. At last, everyone has enough water to drink. The water cloning machine can save the world!
Through out this story,I feel hopeful because our creativity can solve many problems in the future.

Miss Peggy, the poem you wrote was absolutely amazing. When I read it, I thought,
"Who wrote this poem? It's absolutely amazing!Must've been a famous poet!"
So I have made up a poem in response:

A final drop of water
You can't use it to charter
Do nothing,though
It will go away, into the sun of yellow

Drink it,and the plant will speak,
"There is no more hope!
I shall die!
Goodbye!"

Let the plant have it,
It is still wasted,
But there is a way
Listen to me say,

Save water from the start,
So it will not be hard.
There will be thousands and thousands of drops
To water the many crops.

And no one needs to bother,
No one needs to suffer-
The rather much rougher
Side of our Earth mother.

The Last Drop of Water

The last drop of water is in my hand.
It seems like I have no chance to stand.
If there was only one more drop of water on you,
What are you going to use it to do?

On the Earth, water is scarce.
It’s almost as dry as on Mars!
For everyone, one drop is the equal share.
How can the surface be so bare?

No more water for humans to live.
The Earth is as dry as a rocky cliff.
You can see the soil at the bottom of the sea.
If we can solve this urgent case, HOW CAN IT BE????????

Wait…I think I have found a solution.
All we need is our perseverance!
We just need to save more water.
Soon the earth is going to get better.

Use less. Conserve more.
It won’t bring you gore.
So, there’s no need to hesitate or worry!
If you don’t do that, you’re gonna be sorry!

Hi, Omeo! I'm Ms. Yau =D

By the way, I'm thinking about your fourth stanza:

"Wait…I think I have found a solution.
All we need is our perseverance!"

If I were you, I think I would change it to:

"Wait... I think I have found a solution.
All we need is to preserve it with devotion."

What do you think? :)

What an impressive poem, Ms Yau!
I have also made up a poem:

The last drop of water,
Is more precious than silver.
I have only one tiny drop remained,
So I must not let it be drained.

I have no time to think,
But I hope it can be safely contained.
As the drop would evaporate,
Therefore we should find a way to remediate.

I shall gather the scientists,
To give this situation a twist.
We will make a time machine,
To help the world with our dream.

We would go a few years back,
Before the world was seriously wracked.
Turn off the taps,
Act otherwise you’ll regret!

Give yourself a shower,
You’re clean like flower.
But there are limits:
Finish it within five minutes!

I must say:
There’s still a lot of ways.
But I’ll stop right here.
Or the long long list would make you fear!

Do you have any ideas to save the world?
To save this exquisite emerald?
To save all those beings,
Which were given God’s blessings?

Save
Water
Now

I did quite enjoy this poem Ms. Yau!

I have made up my own poem as well:

It's the last tiny sapphire,
how would you use this fresh water,
to avoid gaining God's ire?

With the last drop of water,
perhaps you may perform the deed,
to quench the thirst of Mother nature?

Or will you concede,
and drink it yourself,
as a lovely treat?

But if you save the water yourself,
maybe you can defy your fate,
and save the others and yourself.

Change now,before it's too late.

For those of you that are interested, the rhyme scheme is called terza rima and it was first used by Dante Alighieri.

If I only had a drop of water,
I would not let that water,
be used to water an old plant,
that would not be what I want.

Instead,it would be given to Potter,
to make the world a little less hotter,
and prevent the world's water from evaporating,
and stop the world from dying.

I'll do it, for I know the people will be singing,
hooray for isaac, for he saves us again,
instead of going to Mars on a plane !
hip hop hooray ! he saves us again !
