[2 Dec] Just before the pandemic began, I was very fortunate to go on a holiday trip with my family to Kagoshima, Japan. As I do not go abroad often, I decided to make the most of my opportunity. I told myself, “I must try something new at Kagoshima. I should experience something that I would never be able to in Hong Kong – ideally, something that would put me out of my comfort zone, so I could expand my horizons and challenge my limits.”

This mentality set the stage for one of the most memorable moments of the entire holiday: experiencing a Japanese-style hot sand bath!

We arrived at the Ibusuki Natural Sand Bath Centre at the beautiful seaside of Ibusuki, a city within the Kagoshima Prefecture. We all changed to traditional Japanese robes (also known as ‘kimonos’). Next, we walked down to the beach, where many hot springs naturally formed.

We then walked to our designated sand baths on our sandals – but even with the sandals on, my feet felt scorching hot already! I tried hard to keep my feet from touching the sand for too long, resulting in a chicken-like dance! My parents, who had thicker skin on their feet and didn’t feel the heat as much, couldn’t stop laughing at me!

Picture
Next, I had to lie down completely on the hot sand bath with my robes on, whilst attendants used shovels to ‘bury’ me in the scorching hot sands! Only my head and neck were not buried. The moment the sand touched me through the robes, I felt a stinging sensation from front to back, like a thousand needles piercing my skin! My heart was pounding in my chest – I panicked and almost shouted out from the pain. I wanted to stop and leave the bath immediately. However, at this torturous moment, I reminded myself of my mission to challenge my limits – so I gritted my teeth and continued the agonizing treatment.

Strangely enough, a few minutes later, my body did something amazing. It adapted to the heat! I could feel the pain gradually subside, and it was even replaced by a comfortable, soothing sensation. My body started to relax, and I let out a sigh of relief.

Picture
“Time’s up!” said the attendant. I slowly opened my eyes – I didn’t even realize I had fallen asleep! The ten minutes in the sand had flown by.

The hot sand bath ended up as a very relaxing experience, and looking back, it taught me a good lesson of perseverance. I was wowed by how relaxing the sand bath felt in the end. I was also quite proud of myself for not being a quitter – if I had jumped up and quit at the first moment of pain, I would never have understood nor experienced how soothing the sand bath could be.

Boys, have you ever experienced a moment where you wanted to quit at the start, but you held on, and in the end, you were satisfyingly rewarded?

I think that this is a fun experience! I hope that you can share more details about this experience and keep sharing more experiences in the future.
Yes,I have experienced a moment where I wanted to quit at the start because I kept failing in coding a remote car,but I held on,at last I was satisfyingly rewarded by learning how to code in C++ and how to debug.

1. I think Mr Lau’s experience is a relaxing one. It is because being a teacher is hard, so being in a comfortable situation can help you relieve your stress. And because the “Hot Sand Bath” is the top activity of Kagoshima, I would like to try it too!

2. I haven’t experienced a moment where I wanted to quit at the start, but I held on, and I was satisfying rewarded. It is because when I was still a little child, my parents taught me that I should have a mentality of not giving up and fight to the end, and I am also a confident person, so every time I meet a problem, I will fight through and overcome it.

This experience looks really interesting.I understood that we should jump out of the comfort zone.Would you like to be buried in the sand again?
Yes,I have experienced a moment when I wanted to quit at first and was rewarded at last.Last summer, I played War Game with my friends. At first, most of my teammates were shot and my team was losing but I didn’t give up and at last my team won the championship and was rewarded.

Yes, now that I've experienced what it feels like, I would like to buried in the hot sand again (but not all the way up!).

Well done for pushing on, even against the odds when your team was losing! I'm sure you must have felt very thrilled to overcome this adversity. Congratulations!

1.I think this experience is really wow because I haven’t tried this experience before! 2. Yes, when I was 6 years old, I tried to learn how to ride a bicycle. When I was learning, I found it was very hard. I really want to give up as I was kept felling down of the bicycle. However, my dad cheered for me so I held on. At last, I finally succeeded and I can ride bicycle happily now!

Yes, I have experienced that at Ocean Park. Last year, when our class went to Ocean Park for learning the nature and after the lesson, we can go to ride the rollercoasters and my classmates push me into them. But that time, my seatbelt was locked, I couldn’t get out, I wanted to quit at the beginning. I feel stressful but it was fun to ride them and I enjoy the wind, the speed also the stimulation. I enjoyed it very much.

Bravo! I also remember the first time I rode a rollercoaster - the exciting feeling you get when riding a rollercoaster is simply addictive! Now that you've experienced it the first time, I am sure you will enjoy it much more in the future and won't be scared anymore!

Wow! The Japanese-style hot sand bath is so unique! You made me want to try it too, to let me know if I can withstand the heat.
I once experienced a moment, and that is about a race. At first, when I entered the racing line, I saw a lot a big and tall competitors and it made me nervous, but then I decided to hold on. Although I lost in the end, but I was satisfied about my performance and I was satisfyingly rewarded by knowing the moral of never give up.

Wow, This sand bath experience is cool! I’m glad that you stepped out of your comfort zone and experienced such an amazing thing. It must have been difficult for you to successfully adapt to the sand in the bath, but hopefully you did overcame the challenge.
When I was seven years old, I was going to attempt to learn how to cycle on a bicycle. At the start, I slowly stepped on the left side of the bicycle, then lifting my other leg to the other side, trying to balance both sides. However, once I was on the bicycle, I immediately wobbled left to right and before I could realise that I already lost my balance and fell onto the ground. Ouch! Pain spread through my body and my toes, my elbows, my legs hurt. Finally after a minute, the pain gradually became smaller, but my heart was crushed - I wanted to give up. At this moment of complete disappointment and sorrow, my parents came as they lent a helping hand to me, trying to pull me up. They told me not to give up, and those words were like the bright sun of summer, dispersing to dark clouds in my heart. I immediately regained confidence, and after trying and trying, despite the fails I have experienced, I succeeded on cycling! I felt delighted, as the flowers and plants around me start to blossom beautifully. With my perseverance, I finally succeeded on learning cycling and I was satisfyingly rewarded a new cycling protective helmet for me to be safe during cycling.

At first, I ran away because I was so afraid if 360 degree rollercoaster. Eventually, took a deep breath and thought that I have to tried that. I got on the rollercoaster and closed the my eyes. When we arrived the stop of the 360 degrees turning post, I opened my eyes and felt comfortable when I was upside-down. It was so wonderful. This is a good experience for telling me to not give up.

Mr. Lau, it’s such a pleasure to overcome your difficulties in life in the early pandemic! Not everybody can have that attitude towards difficulties.

In these years, I’ve actually had an experience similar to yours - three years ago, I was at a theme park in Korea, with my brother. It was very hot, and I really wanted a cup of ice cream. I was really afraid of the high water slides, as they looked dangerous. My brother said to me, “If you go on the highest water slide, I will buy you a big cup of ice cream, in the ice cream shop nearby. However, if you do not try, you will not be rewarded. Come on, you can do it!”

At that time, I thought, if I need a cup of ice cream, I must try. So, I ran to the highest water slide, with my brother behind me. I sat down on the slide, and pushed myself towards the water.

At first, I closed my eyes, but later I found it very soothing. Not long later, I landed down in the big pool of water. Phew! Actually, overcoming my fears is not that hard!

Later, my brother brought me a big cup of ice cream, and I felt satisfied - as I finally jumped out of my comfort zone. I hope I can have more of these experiences in the future!

1. I think it was a very good, rewarding and fruitful experience. You have certainly learnt a lot, and jumped out of the comfort zone! It must also be fun for you have joined so many interesting activities.

2. Yes, I have tried once. At that time, I was making a Lego Technic Ferrari. It comprised thousands of pieces and was designed for teenagers or adults to build. At first, I was very frustrated because I even didn’t know how to join and connect different parts. I was going to give up, however, my father told me to continue and it would still be enjoyable throughout the process. At the end, I succeeded to complete this and it turned out to be a grand looking Masterpiece of Ferrari model. There were a lot of functions like a genuine car and I learnt a lot the mechanics of these. It was very worthwhile and rewarding!!
