9/8/2023

(8 Sept) Three days ago, on Tuesday, I had the privilege to be interviewed by Mr Chow of our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). We had a great conversation and it was filmed at our train carriage at the playground. I think it is a nice thing to share this recorded interview with you. The above is a shortened version of the interview and the full version will be released by the PTA soon. Do keep an eye on their publications.

Now boys, after viewing this video, please try to answer AT LEAST ONE of the following questions:

1. What is the most important thing you have learnt from this conversation? Why is that important?
2. What do you feel after watching this interview? Explain your answer.
3. What other questions would you have asked if you were the interviewer? Why would you like to ask these questions?

I am looking forward to responding to your answers and I will give a small gift to those who give the best responses! I hope you get it!

Happy watching!

Dr Lee

1.I learned that instead of worrying too much about marks, we should first be enthusiastic at learning English. If you are enthusiastic, marks will eventually come out some time.
2.I want to thank Dr Lee for teaching me over the past 3 years(including this year).
3.I'd like to ask if you were to decide, would you cancel English exams? If yes, what would you replace it with? If no, what would you add or remove(more performance etcetera.)

Hi Nigel, very good reflections here! While examinations can't be totally cancelled, if I had the power, I would make speaking as important as reading and writing in the assessments. But it is not very likely to happen in the near future as the DSE system doesn't work like that unfortunately.

Q1.The most important thing that I have learnt in this conversation is that our school has always given a platform to let us to show our ability in different ways. It is important to give an opportunity for us to express ourselves because everyone can feel gifted as they have a chance to show off their talents.

1. I learnt that marks and academics aren’t the most important thing in learning English. You also have to speak well and socialize in English well. 2. I feel astonished that Dr.Lee has been teaching for such a long time, and that he knows only a bit👌👌👌about English. 3. I would have asked why Dr.Lee always stands up when he teaches a class.

Q1. I personally feel like the most important thing I’ve learned in this conversation is that to learn English better, you need to love the language. It is because it isn’t any good to memorise the words and the language if you don’t even understand the true meaning of it, whereas, if you truly love the language, even though you don’t memorise the meanings and the words, you will likely still understand it. That is why I feel like this is the most important thing I’ve learned in the conversation.

Q2.First of all, I would like to congratulate Dr. Lee about his recent achievement. I think becoming assistant principal is a incredible feat and you deserve everyone’s praise. Second of all, I feel like I’ve learnt a lot from this conversation. I have learnt why Dr. Lee wanted to teach, when he wanted to teach, but my thoughts about Dr. Lee haven’t changed at all. He is an amazing teacher overall and we are very lucky to have him in Ying Wa. Dr. Lee, your students now and your past student are very lucky to have you to guide us though our Ying Wa youth. Thank You.

Q3. I would like to ask the interviewer, “ Mr interviewer, not to be skeptical of Dr. Lee’s skill and your choices, but why and how did Dr. Lee be assistant principal? This question just came to mind and it piqued my curiosity.

Hi Caspian! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You really sound mature and intellectual here! Amazing! You should've been the one to interview me instead! Ha! Now, I need to correct you...Students are lucky here not because I teach them, they are lucky because they have chosen YWPS! On your final question, why and how I got the new post? Well, it was simply because there was a vacancy, then I applied for it, went through a formal interview, and got the part!

Hello Cheuk Yuen! I expected a bit more content from your message. However, you did ask an amazing question! Am I gifted? Yes, I am ^o^, so is everybody here in YWPS. It is only that not every student's giftedness is obvious. Your being able to ask this philosophical question implies clearly that you are highly critical and intellectual. Very nice!

1.The thing that will always be in my heart is that loving the language is more important than the score.this is important because according to my experience and knowledge, if u don't like something you are learning and instead u feel forced to learn it, you will never succeed nor grow. But at least Dr.Lee gave us an excuse to have a bad score.(JK)
2.I feel that Dr.Lee's quotes have given me more confidence and more love towards English and even gave me a heart to improve in English even though I got the highest score in my class last year . Also , congratulations on the promotion Dr. Lee. 👍🥳Now, it is an even bigger pleasure to be your ( An assistant principal's ) student I feel so grateful and fortunate.
3.If I was the interviewer:
Q1: Was ur English good when you were at the students age?
Q2:Was there a moment that you wanted to quit teaching?Who or what cause it?

1. After viewing the inspiring conversation that educated me about many different aspects of my journey in Ying Wa, what I think is most important was a special point that Dr Lee put well. Talent takes shape in many forms. Talent does not only come in the shape of IQ. Excelling at music, visual arts, sports or even technology all can be deemed as talent. However, I am sorry to say neither of us are statistically special. Only a limited amount of people in this world are. I do not agree with that statement. We all are good at a specific subject, the king of our own world. There is much to separate us except for our DNA. The fact that Dr Lee is trying to remove fishes from the tree and put them back in their pond is , putting it in an understatement , worth mentioning. However, we must remember that we are unique. Just like everyone else.

2. Allow me to congratulate Dr Lee regarding his promotion. May I say that I was not surprised when I received notice that he became an assistant principal. And why wouldn’t I not be? After all, he has served Ying Wa for such a long time; he has served countless students achieve their goals, including me.

3. If I were to be the interviewer, I would ask Dr Lee if he had more exciting English -based activities to come. After all, interest is the mother of all education !

On an additional note, I would like to once again congratulate Dr Lee for rising through the ranks. You deserve this !

Q1. From this interview, the most important thing I learnt is that we should not care too much about our assessment marks, and that we should care more about our interest and passion in English. If we have an interest, good marks would come naturally.

Q2. I think this interview is very inspiring. I learnt the correct way to face English, and also that most Ying Wa boys are talented. I am very lucky and honoured to be one of them!

Q3. If I were the interviewer, I would ask Dr. Lee if there were any more English-based activities to come. After all, these activities can stimulate our interest in English.

Q2.I think that reading books and enjoy the language is very important in our lives. Q1.I’ve got the most important message from the conservation that while it's important to acknowledge the significance of marks in certain academic context, it's equally crucial to recognize that enthusiasm and a genuine love for learning are the foundations for sustainable progress and success in any field, including English language learning. ( I love languages:) )

Furthermore, I think Language learning is a lifelong journey, enthusiasm will sustain you through various stages, from beginner to advanced levels.

Q3. If I were the interviewer, I’d like to know if you are currently pursuing advanced studies in English outside of your school work to enhance your language skills and proficiency. As this is your first year teaching me , I am confident that i can learn some effective methods to sustain and cultivate my passion for language from you.

Congratulations on your promotion to the position of Assistant Principal!

Hello Owen, your English is superb as seen from this passage you wrote! Very mature and organized! I love your use of the word "enthusiasm" and I totally agree with you on that!
As for further studies, I do not currently have any plans to earn anymore credentials. But I will keep sharpening my skills by learning from the latest education trend. And I will surely benefit from interacting with my students, including you, certainly!

If I want to succeed, I’ve to like it first. I should read more books and like the subjects. We shouldn’t only care about marks, we should love and enjoy what we are learning.

From this conversation, I’ve learned that when you love the language, the score will naturally come. If I were the interviewer, I would ask Dr. Lee why he chose YingWa primary school but did not choose other schools.

Hi Daniel! You asked a good question that the interviewer didn't ask! I applied to many schools when I first started to look for a job. It was YWPS that gave me an offer first. That's why I am here!

1:I think the most important thing that I have learned from this conversation is that we should not worry too much about our exam results.Overall, what we should worry is our love and interest for the language. We should read more books and passages of English to increase our liking for the subject.

2: First of all, I felt very inspired. Also after watching this conversation, it made me think about being an English teacher, as I was quite good in this subject. I thought that maybe if I chose the path leading to the career of teaching English, I might become a wonderful teacher like Dr Lee!

3:If I were the interviewer,I would like to question Dr Lee why would he choose to teach ywps at the first place. Since there were so many schools in Hong Kong. Also why would he choose to teach this school for such a long period of time?

Question 1: The most important thing that i have learnt in this conversation is that the score of exams isn't important, but the love of the language is. It is important because instead of having the discouraging scores when you get your exam papers, you can focus on actually using and learning English.

2. Also after watching this conversation, I was suprised. I think that when you were young , you should be a talent of english , but at the video, you said you were just a tittle bit better than your classmates ?Actually , I think you were more better than your classmates because now you are the best english teather in YW!

3.At last , Dr Lee, why are you so good at English? Do you have any tips?

Dear Marcus, I don't think I am the best English teacher here. Obviously you haven't been taught by all of the English teachers in this school for a better comparison! But anyway, thanks for your kind words. I still think I am only a bit better in English than some people. I am far from excellent and that's why I need to keep learning. Perhaps this passion to learn can help a person improve. I hope that you are also having this passion.
