Speech Gala 2020: A Decade's Brilliance

[21 Jan 2020] The 10th episode of our annual speech and drama event “Speech Gala” seems to have displayed to the audience a new stream of energy flow with our new School Principal Ms Sylvia Chan officiating the event for the first time, with HKU’s Senior Lecturer Miss Nicole Tavares adjudicating the competition for the first time, with twin winners in the P.6 Public Speaking category for the first time and so much more.

Personally, I feel that this year
’s Speech Gala is extraordinarily special because I finally had the chance to meet Miss Tavares after over a decade since I last met her in HKU where I completed my teaching diploma. Miss Tavares was my teacher and mentor. Her professionalism, cheerfulness and positiveness have been staying in my mind. She carried on with all these precious qualities to my school and appreciated and supported our boys to the fullest. Seeing her at work made me feel like a student all over again!

While the Gala gives all the boys equal opportunity to take part in the learning and training of the language arts materials, I am surprised every time by the different ways the finalists employ on stage to give a distinctively new life to the piece they perform. So much effort and innovation is shown year after year!

I congratulate all participants in the finals and thank all my English Teaching teammates for making the event educational and entertaining again.

I am already looking forward to witnessing the next Speech Gala!

Dr H C Lee

Yes, the speech gala was very exciting this year and it was the first year we were allowed to do public speaking and duologue. I was thrilled to try something new so I joined in the duologue section. It was also the first time I won first place in the speech gala!!!

Miss Tavares’ comments were very detailed and she listed out many ways we could improve. She was an incredible speaker. She commented on my performance which was very educational. She taught me how to improve!

I want to thank Miss Jackie, and my partner Ka Chai. Ka Chai and I made a good team. I hope we can do this again next year, which will be my last opportunity.

I was delighted to win the last Speech Gala I would ever experience, with the rare case of a double champion. Miss Tavares was an excellent adjudicator as she pointed out our mistakes and ways for us to improve.

This was my first time trying the Public Speaking category, and I was quite surprised when I knew that I won. I wanted to try new things and cherish the last Speech Gala, the annual event organised by the English Department. Here, I would like to thank Mr Ching for giving me productive advice, my parents for supporting me and listening to my speeches, and the English Department for hosting such a great platform for me to learn and experience new things.

By all means, although I won’t be able to participate in the following Speech Gala, I will still attempt future chances to join different competitions involving my speaking skills! That’s what the Speech Gala’s all about, right?

This is my first and last year of entering the Speech Gala, and thank you, Mr Ching, for letting me enter this competition. Although I only got second place, I am very happy that I can enter this wonderful competition.

This was my first year preforming in the speech gala , when the contest started , my stomach did flip flops . When Ms Jenny Ho announced that it was my turn , I felt incredibly nervous, but when I was preforming , I felt all my nervousness melt away, but once it was time to announce the winner ,I felt my stomach tying up in knots , I could not stay still ! When the judge announced that I was the champion , I was overjoyed ! When I was on stage receiving the award , I did my best not to burst into tears of joy , I could hardly believe this was true ! Thank you so much Miss Fung for giving me this amazing chance to preform in this amazing contest and training me on that day . I will remember this experience forever.

This was actually my first attempt performing the duologue category and I’m still surprised we are first place in the speech gala! I’d really like to thank Miss Jackie and my partner Aden. I couldn’t have won it without them. We made a great team.

Miss Tavares wrote us outstanding comments on our performance and suggested different ways for us to improve more. She gave us a lot of tips! Lastly, I hope I can join the final of the speech gala next year as it’ll be the last one I will have in Ying Wa Primary School.
