[19 May 2023] The long-awaited face-to-face version of Speech Gala finally returned yesterday after turning into video mode in the past 2 years!

Thanks to the great support from our boys, parents, English teachers and Principal Chan, brilliant finalists brightened up the show yesterday in the school hall. All performances were judged by our external adjudicator Mr Genper Wong (top DSE scorer in 2020) who also won in the Speech Gala when he was in YWPS! This is particularly meaningful for our boys to meet and be inspired by their big brother!

While we congratulate all our finalists, these winners earned their First Place Awards deservedly:

After I got selected for the Primary 4 Speech Gala competition, I was very nervous as I knew there would be hundreds of people watching my performance. Therefore I practised very hard.

During the competition, I saw many incredible performances both prose and verse, especially my one. I thought I would not get any places as all other performers were better than me. I was very surprised when I got first place that I actually thought the announcer read someone else's name! Thank you to my wonderful English teacher, Mr Lau since he taught me some prose reading techniques. I hope I can keep it up next year!

Hello Dr. Lee! I must thank you first for that you have chosen us to represent the class and taught us the skills when we played the duologue. If we didn’t have you, we will loose.
Second, I have to thank my parents. They cheered me and helped me for the Speech Gala so much. For example, they taught me postures during the conversation with Truck. Also, at the night before the competition, I was so worried I couldn’t sleep. They cheered me that I needed to rest to gain energy for the coming day, and I should enjoy in the show but not nerves.
Then, I have to thank Truck. We’ve had a lot of zooms at night, but he didn’t feel tired at all. Furthermore, he was always serious while our practice and found ways to improve.
Last, I have to thank my classmates. They cheered us a lot and made my worries became courage. At all, I think this experience is incredible. I thank the school for holding the Speech Gala, it was so fun and exciting. I’ve learned a lot in the competition. Thank you!

Hi Cory, glad to see your positive response. You worked so hard for this and your team self-directed the training most of the time and this is very moving because it is even more meaningful that you were motivated to engage in your own learning. What a lovely attitude and performance!

This is my first and also the last time competing in face-to-face version of Speech Gala. The moment I got selected for it, I promised myself to put in all my effort as I want the Speech Gala to be a memorable part of my 6 years in YWPS.

When I was waiting for my turn in the hall, I was incredibly nervous as I don't want anything bad to happen such as forgetting the lines.
Luckily, I've got very very supportive classmates. Their cheers and encouragements made me calm down a lot ! I didn't expect that I would get 1st place as my competitors did an astonishing job too ! My English teacher Mr Richard was so proud as there were 2 winners from class 6D. I want to thank Mr Richard and class 6D for giving me so much support and suggestions ! Thank you and goodbye. :)

My great pleasure to be the adjudicator of this year’s Speech Gala. It was wonderful to see so many bright boys performing on stage, each of whom had his own convincing and unique interpretation. They all excelled at their category. A very enjoyable experience indeed. Keep up the great work!

This is my first time participating in the Speech Gala, and I am surprised to win the first place. Thanks to Mr.Philip for giving me the opportunity to represent 6C and to my classmates, who gave me advice and comments to improve my speech. Although I was a bit nervous during the speech, but when I saw my classmates supporting me, I vowed to do my best.

This is the first time I did the speech gala face-to-face, but I find it more enjoyable than the online version.

To begin with, I would like to thank Dr Lee for choosing me for the finals and helping me out with some skills. I would not have achieved this good result without Dr Lee’s help.

Moreover, I want to thank my classmates. They gave me so much encouragement. Although I sometimes forgot my script during the rehearsal, they never teased me but gave me warm comfort.

Lastly, I would like to thank the person who initiated this fabulous event. It's such a great opportunity for all Ying Wa boys to practise their speaking skills in front of the public!

Brothers, don't be shy and get going!

I was pleasantly surprised that we won in the Speech Gala. All the other participating students gave excellent performances. I couldn’t believe we were the last ones (i.e the first place) to be announced for the award.

I am very grateful to Mr. Richard for choosing us, and also thank him for giving us valuable advices and trainings, so that we were able to do better.

I would also like to thank my partner, Elaeth. We practised hard together, many zooms and even going to my home to practice in holidays/after school. I really enjoyed the process of discussing the two characters and designing our tones and emotions.

Last but not least, I’d like to thank Dr. Lee and other teachers for organizing this event. It was an unforgettable experience for me and I have learnt a lot. Most importantly, I have improved my confidence in speech. I hope this contest will continue and let Ying Wa boys show their talents and have fun.

It was my first time on stage for an English Speech Gala. It has been a wonderful experience as I was doing this face-to-face. I want to thank my classmate Cory for being supportive all the way. It was because of everyone’s encouragement, I was able to perform a great duologue. However, to me, the most important thing in this isn’t the prize, but the learning experience.

Wow! I'm so exciting that I got 1st place in my Grade in English Speech Gala! Giving my first speech in front of my classmates and teachers can be really nervous!! However, I was really enjoying to perform my verse speaking in the stage of Ying Wa assembly hall. Haha, The more fun I'm having, the easier it becomes. I will continue to improve and win even more awards!^^ At last, thanks YW for organizing the event. See you all next time in YW Speech Gala.

Firstly, allow me to thank you all the teachers, students, judges, and everyone who took part in this speech gala. This has been an amazing experience for everyone who performed in this activity.
I would like to thank most my partner, Jason, as this wouldn‘t happen if he wasn’t there. I also owe this to Mr. Richard as he gave us a chance on stage and gave us some precious comments.
“Practice makes perfect,” and we did practice a lot. We practiced a lot, including face-to-face, and zoom meetings. Both of the characters and the story plot was really funny and we had a lot of fun.
I was shocked when we were chosen for the ones to be on stage. This was the first time performing in the Speech Gala and I had butterflies in my stomach. The most startling thing throughtout this whole competition was when we were announced as the champion. I mean, the others had done well too, especially 6E, considering that I forgot a line in my script, which was a big problem in these preformances.
I would thank once again all the participants in this Speech Gala. This activity not only did give me an unforgettable experience, it also gave me valuable lessons on performing in front of more than a hundred or two people.
I can say that this is my first time, and this is also going to be the last time that I‘m able to perform in a Speech Gala event held by the Ying Wa Primary School, as I’m about to be in secondary. So, good luck to every Ying Wa Boys who are willing to be on stage, remember to follow your dreams.
At last, I would like to deliver this, “Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts.” — Albert Einstein

Above all, I greatly appreciate Miss Yip for choosing me to participate in the final Speech Gala and teaching me critical skills on speech performance. Secondly, I am grateful for my parents’ teaching of body language and voice acting. Lastly but not least, I must thank all my classmates for supporting and cheering for me. When I was walking towards the stage, they kept on cheering me which gave me the strength and confidence; you guys are awesome! Thank you all again and stay healthy:)

I’d like to thank every teacher, and the judge Mr. Genper Wong. This is my second time participating in the speech gala face-to-face,(I did it once when I was primary one)but this was a lot more unforgettable not only because of winning, but also because I enjoyed myself on the stage.
Regarding this, I’d like to thank Ms Ming, my English teacher, for giving me useful advice.I wouldn’t have won without her.
Secondly I’d like to thank Cyrus and Duncan, who are my best friends, for encouraging me and even recited the poem with me! It is such an honour to have such good friends.
Lastly, I’d like to thank all my classmates for giving me the confidence to step on stage. I could never forget their thumbs up for me when I got on stage.
Thank you to you all😊.
