Triumphs in Europe - Lawrence's Musical Reflection

Written by Lawrence Ma 5B

This summer, our school’s orchestra went to Prague, Bratislava and Vienna for two competitions and a remarkable and unforgettable experience for us.

During this trip, I had some memorable moments.

My first memorable moment was when I got the chance to have a flute lesson with a professor in the Bratislava Conservatory of Music. Being taught by a teacher there is very different, as their music sense and their style of teaching really lets us learn more than we usually do.

My second memorable moment was when we got the winner’s prize for the symphony orchestra category and Grand Prix prize (only given to teams which have achieved a total mark of 97 or higher). We felt very honoured to receive the prizes and felt all our long and exhausting practices for the past few months finally paid off.

My third memorable moment was when I got up on stage to be the MC for our performance at the church of Sts. Simon and Jude. I had to introduce our school, and three of the nine pieces we were going to perform. Even though the experience was nerve-racking, it was a great opportunity for me.

Aside from the three most memorable moments, visiting landmarks, taking boat cruises and having a very high-class lunch at Hotel Imperial in Vienna also made our music tour unforgettable. Thanks to the school for organizing the tour and giving us an opportunity to perform and compete, and most importantly, thanks to Mr. Poon and Miss Luk for training us!

Congratulations! I heard the news of our team's victories and feel particularly pleased that you had some unique personal experiences during the tour. I think the school made a brilliant choice to have you as the MC. Your individual flute Master Class looked fantastic too! Lucky you Lawrence!

Congratulations to you, Laurence :)!! I think you did a good job while learning your flute lesson and peforming in the church. I also think that being a MC is difficult because you need enough courage to be a MC, and being a MC can help you pratising your speaking skills. Well Done!!

I agree with you that we won the winner’s prize for the symphony orchestra category and Grand Prix prize but we still have to work harder and get a higher mark next time and I hope you will improve your musical skills after your master class!:)

Congratulations! I am sure that you have gained lots of knowledge from the professor, and being an MC for the performance is a chance that students in the senior band seldom have .But is the training for the performances hard and harsh?

I think the master class is very useful and meaningful to you. You must have learnt something from the master, haven't you? Thank you for your sharing which takes me back to my memories. The experience of being a MC for the performance in Prague's church is probably unforgettable and precious for you. Cheers for us for winning the prize(golden band and grand prix). Thank you for your fantastic and wonderful reflections.

I always think that playing percussion (I play it) is really relaxing. But playing flute must have enough air to blow to play it,so I always think that I am lucky. Also,I think you learned a lot of skills in the master class.I think it is a really good experience for you,Lawrence.
