Parents, Headmistress and teachers supported the Grand Finals at City University of Hong Kong
Battle of genders - our brilliant boy debaters, Alfie Zhu (6E), Ronney Chang (6D) and Keith Kwok (6D), might have yet won the champion from the girls on the opposite side, I believe they have learnt more than they know. This final showdown was too brilliant to miss.
 | Held on 20 May at the City University of Hong Kong, the YWPS debating team showed why they could reach the final in their first attempt joining this renowned debating competition organized by the Native English Speaking Teachers' Association (NESTA). With effective coaching from Mr Thomas Ching, our debating group defeated strong competitors on the way to reach the final, facing Hong Kong Taoist Association Wun Tsuen School which sent out three exceptionally tactful female debaters in the occasion. Arguing over whether Hong Kong is a good place for children to live, our affirmative arguments clashed with strong oppositions. Judges were simply blown away by the super high quality of the debaters from both sides and particularly praised our boys for their obvious potential to become lawyers and government officials in the future. |
While our team might not have won the top prize in the end, what impressed me most as a teacher was the relaxation of our kids during the contest - their way of handling pressure and their great manners when facing adversity in a big competition like this are a perfect reflection of the core value of YWPS! We do not always win, but the effort to win is the key learning. I am touched by our children's talent and charm during the competition, their genuine satisfaction after receiving the award, our parents and teachers' whole-hearted support to our school, our teachers' professional coaching, and the very fact that our boys treasure every opportunity to make English a medium for adventures and creativity.
It's just our first attempt in this well-organized contest. And we have set the bar very high for next year. Well done Ying Wa boys! Proud of you!
