Vincent won the "Most favourite Debater Award".
Congratulations to our English Debating Team for snatching the second place at the 5th Primary Schools Debating Tournament 2018, which was organized at St Joseph’s Primary School on 12 May (Sat). This time, our team sent out three members who are Luke Cheung (6B), Cayden Wong (6C) and Vincent Song (6C) to take part in this highly competitive tournament. They defeated two schools in a row and entered the final round against Marymount Primary School. Ying Wa has become the first school which can enter the final round twice in three years and that is an impressive record. In the end it was a very close match and our team was awarded the second place.

This year, 12 elite schools enrolled in this competition including Diocesan Boys’, Diocesan Girls’, Heep Yunn, Marymount, St. Joseph’s, St. Stephen’s, Canadian International, Choi Kai Yau Primary School and others. We competed against the Raimondi Primary School in the first round and the motion was “Competition is not necessary in the learning process.” We were on the negative side and our team won with 228 - 237. The adjudicator was impressed with our solid team line and powerful rebuttal.

We were against Diocesan Boys’ at the second round and the competition was fierce. The motion was “Homework should be prohibited during school holidays” and we were on the affirmative side. Both teams were strong in their argument and demonstrated excellent speaking skills. In the end, the match was a really close-call but our team managed to secure another win with only a one-mark difference, i.e., 229 – 228.

The whole team was thrilled when they found out that they had made it to the final match. Ying Wa faced Marymount Primary School and we were debating for the negative side of the motion “Competition is not necessary in the learning process.” Beyond any doubt, both teams performed their best and all three adjudicators were pleasantly surprised with the high quality of the match and said that the performance was of professional level. After a long deliberation, the judges gave the crown to Marymount but Vincent Song (6C) was voted to be the “Most Favourite Debater” in the competition. Ying Wa took home the second place and all team members were happy with the results and agreed that it was a wonderful experience.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all the team members who have contributed to the preparation of the match. I hope that all of you have benefitted from our daily practice and mock debates. I would also like to thank all the parents who came to support the boys and help with the logistics. I hope all of you have enjoyed the competitions. Good luck to all the team members this year and I wish you can keep up the passion and pursue in debating!

Wonderful results!!! Congratulations boys and Mr Tam! This is a high quality competition involving only a handful of selected schools. Getting into the final is already a tremendously high recognition. I'm sure the boys have learnt so much from this experience! Well Done!

YEE-HAA! What a wonderful experience , I think all of us in the debate team can at least agree on that (We can only agree on that, because we're debating amongst ourselves for the rest of the time, we're the DEBATE team after all.) Anyway, personnally as the second speaker, I'm gonna offer my own insight of the event.
First of all, I've got to say why I joined the debate team...I've always had a thing with speeches- I'm quite keen on them. Anyway, a teacher reccomended me to Mr Tam(our coach) And after eventually entering as a member in the debate team which included ten of us, I completely fell in love with debate: The tension between between the teams, the rush of adrenaline that comes before a speech... And debate itself, The art that it radiates.
Back to the competition, all of the schools there had clearly preparing for days , and all of them were quite strong. Especially DBS, our school's "nemesis" in interschool competitions, they were very honorable and professional opponents, and we really thought they were goind to win. That one mark that made the gigantic difference is owed to everybody who contributed in the competition- it was the one mark that brought us to the finals. Ihave to admit that Marymount Primary school really deserved to win, they are way better than us... There is sooo much we can learn from their performance. But in the end, it's just the progress that matters the most! (Well, winning did matter, but at least we lost to a couple of pretty girls.)
A word thanks of thanks here. I hereby thank everyone who contributed to this competition, my parents, who motivated me, my classmates, who encouraged our team. Our teammates in the debate team: Geoff Wong, Ian Kim 6B, Chu Tin Hang 6C, Ethan Chan 6C, Micheal Lo 6C, Alex Leung 6D, Ethan Fong 6D. Thankyou for all of your support, your amazing ideas and help...We could have never made it that far without you. And the official Debate team who "battled" alongside me on the stage that day : Luke Cheung 6B, Vincent Song 6C, you guys totally did GREAT! Thankyou for practising together so much, for sacrificing soo much time for this competition. And of course Thanks to Mr Dennis Tam , our amazing coach. All of us owe all the knowledge of debate to you. Thankyou for using so much time to practice with us, to teach us and to lead us. (I know you didn't get extra pay for this) It was tatally all owed to Mr Tam that we even got the chance to participate in the competition. And lastly, thankyou to our school... for giving us such a great experience! THANKYOU EVERYONE for reading this article and supporting us.
YEE-HAA! WHAT A TIME! A MEMORY THAT I SHELL BRING WITH MYSELF FOREVER!!!

Mr. Cayden, I would like to remind you just like you did last time, that this is a public website that can be accessed by anyone. So, do mind your spelling mistakes.
Also, quoting your comment 'But in the end, it's just the progress that matters the most! (Well, winning did matter, but at least we lost to a couple of pretty girls.)' I think that it should be 'But in the end, it's just the progress that matters the most, not the couple of pretty girls.'
Yep. Be serious. I know you can. I can't. Oops, what did I say?

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman. First of all, I would like to do a quick recap of today's debating match. The affirmative first speaker claimed that... WAIT!! Am I still stuck inside the script?
Yeah, I sure am. This debate competition takes, well, a lot of preparation and a lot of practice. However, It is fun. And I promise you this is not some kind of cliché. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, whether it is onstage or 'behind the scenes'. Really!
Like, when you first join debate, you feel like it's just about reading a script and organizing rebuttals, and I guess that's what the audience feels, too. But since I've tried it in a 'real life combat', I'm gonna tell you, debating is not like a speech festival competition. It's more of a 'rocket launch' style. Every word choice, every pronunciation, every line in the summary, and the different tones during a speech (e.g. sarcastic, joyful, playful), plus all your expressions, they all count towards your success—or failure. One single mistake, then BOOM, you're game over.
Yes, I think I do agree that this debating tournament is one of the most stressful competitions I've ever participated in. However, the more you get accustomed to the mode of it, the more you get addicted—in a good way. You do feel highly stressed, but with the reward of the fun while arguing with others. Debating is really like a rocket launch. You probably do not feel confident if the launch is going to succeed, but when it does, it's something for you to be joyful for, like ages.
And, here's something I don't understand about debate. It's that it can make you cuter! I still remember clearly that after I've said my speech in the finals, Cayden (the second speaker) was totally like 'Hey Vincent! You know whah? You're so cute!' My response, well, a downright 'NO'. But if you wanna be cuter, then go for debate. Just try it. It's definitely gonna benefit you.
Lastly, I wish to say a big THANK YOU to all the parents and students (Geoff Wong, Ian Kim 6B, Chu Tin Hang 6C, Ethan Chan 6C, Michael Lo 6C, Alex Leung 6D, Ethan Fong 6D) and teachers (especially Mt.Tam, who trained us and gave us support whenever we need some, and sacrificed his own time in the preparation of this competition. Our success owes completely to him. Thank you Mr.Tam!!!!! ) who helped us in the preparation of this tournament and supported us. I would also like to thank my teammates Cayden and Luke. I don't need to point out that without them, this second place wouldn't have been possible.
THANKS EVERYONE FOR THE SUPPORT!!! THIS DEBATE TOURNAMENT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

I KNOW THAT YOU ARE THE THIRD SPEAKER ...

(Sighs) Well, here goes nothing.

All the dudes and teacher Mr Tam of the debate team, thank you all for this wonderful journey! I've been really happy joining this debate class because.... well, it's fun and I could gain new friendships! And the competition was really intense! Practically racist women against gentlemen, it was almost unbelievable we got second place! Well, we've come a long way, and it's still honourable to win at least one place! Hopefully we can still keep our contacts! Plus: ALL SPEAKERS FOR LIFE!

Well.
I am just a starter in debate.
But, my teammates and I got that big ( second big ) silver cup of debate tournament Hong Kong. Unbelievable !
Thanks to my teammates support ! I was totally paralyzed with fear( simply stage fright ) before the first competition. They helped me and teammates through it .
I have to especially thank Mr Tam for helping us to write the scripts ( haha) those scripts helped us gain the beautiful trophy ! ( Although the trainings were a bit { JUST A BIT } too harsh)
Cayden and Vincent, thank you too ! You guys and me ran through all the sunny and stormy days, practising together was the best time we had.
NO LUKE, YOU DID NOT DO WELL ! My brain started screaming after the competition. Yes, this is true. After we lost to Marymount, I was sad and disappointed to myself. When I got home, I totally had a "mental breakdown " Why did we lose ? I checked through my cue cards, and looked at what points did I mess up. YES, THAT'S ME.
It is a must that I will participate debate in secondary, so...
Today, our teamline is debate to create, if we don't debate, we can not create a new life. ...
