Estonia Educational Trip 2024: Day 2

4/28/2024

Picture
(28 Apr) Day 2 of the Estonia trip remains fruitful and peaceful with a nice sunny weather embracing the city of Tallinn. Principal Chan, Vice Principal Mr Kwan, Dr Fong of EdUHK and I formed a group of four and spent the day visiting different places in the city, which was surprisingly quiet in a day as good as this.

We first took a tram and went to a big market to observe the products they sold, and we were easily impressed by their fruits and seafood. After that, we paid a visit to a local supermarket. None of the products however left us with an impression as great as the those in an antique shop, where on display were second-head items like cameras, books, toys, old and used postcards, photos, booklets and even passports in the 50s! Some of these items had notes written on them by their owners before they were abandoned. I couldn't help but wonder if their previous owners know they were there!

After a hearty lunch, we travelled to a village of stylish goods. As for me, I was of course looking for little gifts for those who responded to my questions timely and wisely.

Overall, this day can be described as "relaxing" and the biggest blessing is that the weather was so welcoming, which wasn't common in Tallinn at all!

Official visits start tomorrow. Write you again soon!

Dr Lee

Q1.I think these orange items were the boards that can write words and draw on it. They are used by the people who are selling things since they need to write the price of the products.

Q2.I think these are a part of the local designs' materials, and the pictures of buildings at the top are to show that which material belongs to which building.

1. I think the device has two parts: the grey one is the holder and the orange device is a scanner to scan the barcodes on the products to check the price or check the price in other currencies.
2.I think these blocks are used to build the building in the picture as these buildings are mainly made by rectangular and square blocks, they can be replicated as a model by combing these blocks. Maybe you can get a discount if you succeed to finish the model.

These devices, neatly arranged within the supermarket, lead me to the following speculations: Firstly, considering that Estonia has long entered an aging society, and the government has repeatedly announced and implemented policies to stimulate fertility in hopes of reversing the trend, I surmise that these devices in the supermarket are self-checkout machines. They play an indispensable role in significantly reducing the workforce while still maintaining the basic and necessary societal demands. Secondly, the abundance and concentrated placement of these machines, especially next to the fruits and vegetables section, likely near the exit, further suggests that they are indeed self-checkout machines.

Qs 1) They are the scanner for the prices. They might not have any labels to show the how much is the price. All products’ prices are saving in this handed scanner. So, when we enter the supermarket, we need to take one and when you want to know how much is the product, then u need to scan the product’s barcode and it will show you how much is it.

Qs 2) I guess they are just the 3D models of the different buildings. If we are interested in any types of buildings, we can buy them and like legos to build a mini size of the building by ourselves at home.
